- Life has gotten more digital than ever before. And the plusses of that for the environment has been clear…as in clear skies and clean air. What is not so clear however is this: when it comes to greenhouse gases, the Internet is responsible for 2% of global emissions. If the Internet were a country, it would be ranked as the sixth largest polluter in the world.
But the Internet is here to stay, so what can be done to make it greener? From individuals not hitting Reply All on emails or turning off Auto Play for videos, to data centres running on green energy and search engines giving back to the environment, host Prerna Pant looks at all the various ways we are Greening The ‘Net.

One of the best documentaries from CNA! Thanks for this!
Mind boggling different perspective of internet usage. But globalization and data sharing is so unavoidable in today's world as we move to more and more sophisticated technology.
Great content. Keep making videos on more such intresting topics. 😛🔥

Where is game industry? Everytime someone buy a game they still need to update with gigs of data before able to play, and occasionally need to download gigs of updates. Also smartphone industry, where every year new android version was introduced and new smartphone model were introduced, also app industry where every weeks you will need to update your app and growing size of the app. I believe these have much more waste in comparison.
You'd probably update your app with about 100Mb max, maybe once every week, and the average game update would be about 1Gb, maybe every month.
By comparison you're looking at about 500Mb for watching a 10min RUclips video in 1080p (source: Google)
Considering the average kid will be watching kids videos back to back for hours straight, the raw Mb used for video adds up really really quickly!
You're not wrong that gaming and smartphone apps are contributors, but in terms of raw numbers, video streaming is easily the largest contributor to data use.
Wow, when I was a kid we had a black and white T. V. We had seven T. V. stations. Then in 1967 we were the first to get a color T. V. and I got a transistor radio. Now we are in the Jetsons age.
I wonder do sea creatures get caught in the cable or does it make any pollution for them. Interesting.
It probably does. I mean, the sea is their habitat, and data centers are basically invading it.
They should have picked a better host.
We're all connected.
I have vinal and CD's and a Player. I have a VCR/T. V. and VHS tapes. :-) I had an eight track tapes and Player but it broke.
Thought 💭 provoking 🦶
Not enough pictures of nuclear cooling towers when talking about greenhouse gas.
no ones talking about the fact were using the internet to watch this
43:55 it’s talked about.
@handprint!!
Compare to buying books, DVDs, newspapers, magazines, photo albums to access information, sending physical mails, making telephone calls, getting dedicated video conferencing system, Internet has saved tremendous amount of energy while connecting everyone rich or poor.
it is a good video
like
Seriously ? youre talking about internet's carbon footprint and youre using the internet to report this ? Double Standard once again.
This host accent is terrible.
Very profound comment
