Wish I could tell the writers of this song how much it meant to me when it came out in the summer of 79. My neck was broken and spinal cord damaged in June. I was still in traction when I heard this song for the first time. This song and the Lord gave me the strength to push forward. "Do It or Die".
Writers were Ronnie Hammond, J.R. Cobb and Buddy Buie. All three are deceased now, but I'm sure they're in Heaven looking down and are happy their song made a difference in your life.
I'm now 61 and this song still makes me cry! This song us one of the VERY BEST ever written and performed! It got me through some rough times throughout my life...starting after it came out...espc early 80s. Thanks for bringing me encouragement to keep pushing forward! May YaH Bless you all! 🎼🎶💞👍💞
I lost my mother and wife months apart ten years ago. Plus, my work place not only didn't support me, but they went after me. This song was my personnel lifeboat. Thank you ARS you soothed my pain.
This songs gave me the inspiration to move on and still try in spite of heavy life troubles, like there was nothing left to do to make changes in life happens, but it did!!! Thanks for the wonderful melody and lyrics. RIP Ronnie Hammond,
Ahhh to be 21 again as I was in 1979. Life was simpler and the music had more staying power than much of today's. Heck even our 20 something kids say as much. Ronnie Hammond and ARS leave a memorable track here that has that "pick-me-up" quality to it. Rest in peace, Ronnie this song is a keeper!
I am 50 years old and grew up during this era ( still growing up ) I absolutely love ARS, Outlaws, Stillwater, Nantucket, Allmans, etc., But I feel that Ronnie Hammond had the smoothest voice out of all the Southern Rockers. Thanx Ronnie
Dear God! What an inspiration of a Song! And the lyrics are such an encouragement to Anyone who doubts their place in this troubled World! The Atlanta Rhythm Sections was a welcome Presence among Southern Rock and 80s Lounge Music.
A fantastic song with wisdom to live by. ARS is just a fantastic band. You can't fake the heart and soul coming through in this song. IMHO ARS puts most of the newer rock bands to dire shame.
A friend and I were drinking last week and we got into a discussion about music. We're both in our mid 50's and he was telling me how music from our age (especially the 70's) just didn't hold up well and wasn't worth listening to anymore. I bet him a pitcher of beer that I could prove him wrong and he accepted. I immediately walked over to the jukebox and played this song. As soon as I'd gotten back to my seat, the bartender walked up with a pitcher of beer and my friend said, "you win."
I was one blessed girl...I actually got to be friends with Ronnie...He was a gift...this song still inspires me today..."Do It or Die...you only live twice...you still gotta try..." Never give up...Ronnie didn't!!
When i first saw one of his video's "So Into You" - I thought it was a little bit too sexy , but i just feel that he was a True Southern Gentleman indeed . Sometimes we portray ourselves in many different ways .
51AngieH - your tribute brings tears to me. Have loved the ARS since 74/75 and never wavered ( I can assure you it wasn't the cool thing to do in my SoCal high school). RIP Ronnie Hammond
So sorry for your loss. I opened for them a few times in the 1990's and it was so much fun listening to Ronnie back stage. He always seemed like he didn't even know how talented he was. He was a great person who made everyone feel important. Thank you Ronnie.
Only once heard this broadcast over the later years in Atlanta; but remember this from late '79 when in college in Binghamton NY. Makes more sense currently than ever before. Vaccines ? Treatments ?No way, only G-d's will to allow us to survive.
Ronnie to me is a legend. His music will forever live on in the hearts of ARS fans everywhere. I remember seeing him sing live many times, and had a blast. This is the one song I always listen to when I am down. The words lift me up, to keep on trucking. My condolences go out to you and the rest of the family.
Priscilla Wooten I would’ve loved to have seen them with all the original guys. I saw them in ‘89 missing a few original members, but Ronnie was there. They played on a tractor trailer flatbed in a farmfield out in Mt Dora FL. Was still a great show!
This song is special to me when people would say I couldn't do nothing right by the strength of God who gave me strength of the holy sprit I proved them wrong 🙏✝️😇💖
Truer words spoken. This song is still relevant today & this song still stands the test of times . I’ve been through some tough times. Kinda of a sad song but the lyrics really said it best . Nuts in a nutshell
at UP, 1985, i was deep down depressed. and a friend sang this song for me... in his good old falsetto voice... i just can't believe this song is on you tube.
Little did Ronnie know that this song would have so much meaning in the "Times of Covid/Corona". I loved this song as a child, and still do!!! Life is too short, roll the dice.
The Wonderful Thing about Music is that those writing & doing it are giving Us a gift. A gift that will Live on long after all of us are gone. Till technology finds a better way to Travel back in time ? We'll have to keep doing it through Music. Thank You ARS for the Great Gift of Music and Memories. May You R.I.P Ronnie .
"Do It or Die" remains the jewel of the group's best album, 1979's "Underdog". The song kicks off the album and stayed in Billboard's Top 100 for 14 weeks, peaking at #19.
ARS,great sound of the 70's,when my teams where down, they still managed to win, they pulled a rabbit out of a hat. I think of this song every time,92-93 Toronto Blue Jay's,1994 New York Rangers,2019 Toronto Raptors, I thank you all.
One of the most meaningful, inspiring lyrics in popular music. The tune ain't too shabby, either! Their fifth-biggest hit, featuring lead singer/co-songwriter Ronnie Hammond. 1979 in my heart forever. Released on May 12, 1970, reaching # 19 on July 28. R.I.P., Ronnie.
This is one incredibly beautiful song and I hadn't heard this for probably close to 30 years. I love the sentiment and it has just become my motto from here on in. Thanks so much for posting.
Love this great ol song.. Miss these days. He had such a soothing voice and seemed like a sweet likeable guy.. Rest in peace Ronnie, thank you for everything..
Very well said. I feel exactly the same way. I hope this music lives forever. I know it will follow me until me day I pass. Very Happy I live in the 70"s all the great music we had, and still have. it was a wonderful time and forever forged in my heart.
The first time I saw ARS was at a three day moto-X and concert in Wedowee, Alabama back in the early '70's. They were just starting to make a name. The rest is history. Their music is timeless.
I'm with you chickenwretch. I hadn't heard this song in decades but it always stayed with me. One day, I found a tape of ARS in a thrift shop. I bought it and popped it into the player in my car and, voila, "Do it or Die" came on first thing. I couldn't even drive, I was so re-smitten with this song. Music is so evocative of formative years for us. But don't ache for the past. Remember the whole of it. Also, there's alot of current music that is valuable - just listen to public radio music stations, for example. You'll be fine.
He's seems like such a humble guy. I wonder if Ronnie Hammond realized how talented guy he was and what an amazing voice he had. I wish I would of been old enough to see them when they were at the height of their career.
Why am I always trying to escape the present by diving into the past? What was so good 35 years ago that makes me ache for it? Of course it's youth but youth is typically restless and often uncertain of the future. So it must be those small, insignificant moments one doesn't know is going to be an emotional memory, and usually it's a song that ties our past present and ultimately our future together. As much as 1970s people dislike todays music it's still going to be a sentimental ache for some 17 year old kid alive today. Kick it on down.......
chicenwretch.. OH M GOD I THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY BUT I COULDNT AGREE W/U MORE! I was 10 years old in 1979... I remember vividly watching this video on Video Concert Hall with my best friend Mike on weekend nights... so many good videos and bands on that show (Styx, Iggy Pop, Genesis, Nazareth, Gerry Raferty, David Bowie, Tim Curry, Supertramp, The Who)... the intro music to the show was Carouselambra by Led Zeppelin. Anybody remember this show?... anyways, this song and Spooky, by Atlanta Rhythm Section, were big favorites of mine when I was 10... the good ol' days...
was all into zeppelin and guitar stuff back then until a buddy of theirs, my guitar teacher Roger Wilson turned me on to them and I realized we had our own super stars right here in DeKalb Co. man they still sound so good.
I had a really bad month with the stock market when this song came out. I prayed and listened to this song at least two more times and then I sold at a major profit on margin calls. Thank God for Atlanta Rhythm Section!
What a gifted man Ronnie was ! And I love ARS so much. Time flys by. Seems like just yesterday tooling down the road in my 69 Cutlass S listening to the ARS ! Now I wake up and I'm 55 ! Where'd the time go....

Same reaction and I believe all of these musicians have since passed :(
Atlanta Rhythm Section should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame!!! Such a great band with great songs!!!
The rock'n'roll hall of fame is a joke of an institution.
Ronnie had the smoothest voice.
Atlanta rhythm section belongs in the hall of fame
I lost my husband and best friend of 40 years and this became my theme song. Because life does go on.
Sorry for your loss also lost my wife of 40 years
@@rogerloghry9740 I’m so sorry. I pray you will be able to forge ahead and always remember the happy things.
This hit is still relevant 43 years since it released. One of those songs that sounds better over time.
It's like wine and women, gets better with time
Love that album. Summer ‘79 was special for sure. Also loved Poco’s Heart of the Night that same summer. They don’t write ‘em like they used to.
My Dad passed in 2010 I played this song for him 😢 @ his memorial man I miss him sing with me belt it out & thank you
I lost my mother and wife months apart ten years ago. Plus, my work place not only didn't support me, but they went after me. This song was my personnel lifeboat. Thank you ARS you soothed my pain.
This is songwriting at it's best. It should be required listening. All these beautiful, timeless songs are slipping away.
I LOVE THIS GREAT BAND AND BEAUTIFUL SONG!! I LOST MY SON WESLEY ON FEBRUARY 18, 2022, HE BELIEVED IN THIS YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, DO IT OR DIE!!
Still as beautiful as it was when it first came out.
This songs gave me the inspiration to move on and still try in spite of heavy life troubles, like there was nothing left to do to make changes in life happens, but it did!!! Thanks for the wonderful melody and lyrics. RIP Ronnie Hammond,
Timeless tune - stuff like this never age.

RIP Ronnie. It just makes me sad knowing the music industry has lost this voice.
Such a simple, elegant, BEAUTIFUL song!!!! Loved these days... no one is making music like this anymore, what a shame.
Agree
I am 50 years old and grew up during this era ( still growing up ) I absolutely love ARS, Outlaws, Stillwater, Nantucket, Allmans, etc., But I feel that Ronnie Hammond had the smoothest voice out of all the Southern Rockers. Thanx Ronnie
0ne of their best songs . ATLANTA Rythim Section was one of the premier Southern Rock Bands of the 1970s .
Dear God! What an inspiration of a Song! And the lyrics are such an encouragement to Anyone who doubts their place in this troubled World! The Atlanta Rhythm Sections was a welcome Presence among Southern Rock and 80s Lounge Music.
The 70's.The last great decade for music.

Ronnie was a gentle, cool dude. Ran into him twice in one week; first time in Louisville and a week later in Knoxville. He is missed by many.

Dave Wollenberg Oh no! I didn't know that. 😒
I knew this song years ago and always liked it, lately it's become my anthem. Great song!
Saw Ronnie Hammond twice on stage and he was THE ENERGY of the band. The best singer ARS ever had with all respect to Rodney Justo, a damn good singer in his prime.
thanks for the music Ronnie... R.I.P.
"You only live twice; once when you're born and once when you stare death in the face."
i love the song very much. it brings back not only good but also bad memories but what i like most about the song is that it has a lot of words to live by.
RIP our lovely Ronnie Hammond.

Such a pretty song with a strong message.
2024 soft and sweet ..love this song.🌼💖🌼
Ronnie had heart for sure! I love the way Berry plays that gold top too nobody better in my eyes.
Love this song!
Amazing!! The coolest Band i've ever heard. All thums up!!
ARS... with Ronnie...One of the ALL TIME BEST BANDS in my opinion.
This is such a profound song on a simple level. It came way before Nike's "Just Do It" slogan. "Still gotta try" is still such solid advice.
Super song from a very talented group of musicians.
Ronnie was a genuinely nice guy. Great band, one of the best.
