The appeal of the JCM 800 for me comes from the attack when you have a boost in front of it. Heavier thrashier riffs; the palm mutes come through and give me the same sensation as hitting a 350 lb heavy bag.
JCM's do get flubby, but it's a combination of the upper mid-range attack and the sag and swell of the signal that gives JCM's their voice. They're not an out-and-out "metal" amp, but as demonstrated here; they hold their own if not still outshine some more modern and contemporary amplifiers.
The JCM is a bucket-list amp for me

  • @PaulLembo

Boost plus 800 is still my favorite thrash tone. It has something no modern amp does.

Ive had this amp for a couple years. I was going crazy because I always read TS + JCM800 is supposed to equal thrash, but the only way I could get the saturation and grit to get a satisfying thrash tone was to use a TS plus another overdrive or boost…so thank you for validating me lol. Also awesome review as usual. Thanks for all of the awesome videos!

A JCM with the right pedal sounds like magic. I used to stack pedals at home but when I gigged I didn't do it because I could never make up my mind about what pedals to use in what order. So I usually just used an MXR, Boss or Rat, maybe a Tube Screamer. I went for a more traditional metal tone a la Maiden, Priest, etc.

The SC20 is a great sounding JCM in a smaller and lower watt format that works around the house, easy to toss in your car and is loud enough to hang with a band.
The low input is great for pedals, and the effects loop works perfect for delays, loopers and a volume boost for leads.

On an original 2204/2203 have enough gain to where you'd only need a Tubescreamer or OD/SD-1 to get a basic 'Ride The Lightning' tone. These have less gain. The old amps can be very different amp to amp.

The joys of production back then. Just like Les Pauls. You can get 2 different ones from the same year and they are completely different.

    • @cynicanal111
      @cynicanal111 3 года назад

I can totally get a Ride the Lightning kind of tone with my SC20 with just a simple boost. That album has less gain on the guitars than you think it does, but also, IME the SC20 actually sounds more like the old vertical input 2203s than the 2203x does (which is generally less saturated and a bit different in the mids than the original).

Just picked one of these up off Craig's List and sold my Mini Jubilee. It kills. I have it along with my JCM 2000 DSL 50. It does have more gain than the original which is a big plus. Does it sound exactly like the originals?, no, but close enough and no one would ever know. And so easy to carry. But it has that 800 growl/ tone and feel when playing it. I sold my 82 2204 3 years ago and missed that tone. Now it's back. Put a clean boost in front sounds awesome too. It has plenty of gain with a pedal. Want more gain use the DSL. Both pure Tube signal path. Also sounds killer with Celestion G12t-75 speakers & Greenbacks. Keep in mind the 800 was never designed for Metal, it was a blues amp but when cranked became a hard rock amp. (not metal). Then people started to mod them to get more gain.

Funny how the circle of tone continues. You get a SC20, and it sounds thin at low volumes, and it's too loud for home use. So you need pedals. Then you think "pedals compress the natural amp tone, so I need more natural gain!" Then you think Friedman Runt 20, Splawn Mini. Same as when you have an actual 2204/2203! So Marshall really did make a mini JCM 800 2204!

It's a shame you didn't try it with the master volume *waaaaay* up. MV at 7 or 8 is where the amp really comes to life. MV at 3 just isn't letting this amp do what it should; if going higher is too loud, you'd be better off going to 5 watt mode IME.

I was going to ask if you thought it was loud enough to play with a band, I'm glad you confirmed that. I do play metal but I primarily play old school punk and Deathrock so the amp on its own would have enough gain for me and the power tube saturation would be nice too. I can't afford something like a 2204 or 1987x which is what I'd really love to have but I'm always worried 20 watts wouldn't cut it live but I suppose I could slave it out to someone like a powerstage 170 if I really needed to. I know a guy who uses a 30 watt Marshall artist head and a 2x12 and he keeps up just fine so I feel like with 20 watts and 4x12 I'd be okay haha. Thanks for the super informative videos as always!

Big iron doesn’t saturate! Everyone wants big transformers, the bigger the transformer - the louder your amp, but you lose compression and harmonics. Bigger the iron the more hifi your tone becomes. The magic of old tweed amplifiers was in their undersized transformers.

hello great video! from your review seems it's possible to use this marshall with 2 overdrives.... I would set gain (not for metal tone, more crunch I think) to have clean tone when I roll back the guitar volume and add the first overdrive for riff tone and the second one for solos...do you think it's possible? (I'm searching for 80's Iron Maiden/NWOBHM classic tone)
Second question: do you think it's possibile to use this marshall in 5W mode at home? In particular in a condominium? Now i'm using a Blackstar HT1 (1W) and it's a good volume for a apartment building, but I want a marshall old school tone =)

Great and honest review. I appreciate you mentioning the difference between this, with the smaller transformers, and the larger 800s. So I have a question for you. I want to get an 800, but the prices of the 100W versions have skyrocketed out of my price range. My choices are to either get one of these 20W versions, or get a Ceriatone, who make 100W hand wired clone of the 2203. They're close in price, and I don't really care about the branding, I just want the tone. I guess my question is, will I get closer to the tone of the 100W 800 with the Ceriatone, or the 20W Marshall? Have you tried the Ceriatone before?

Honestly it seems nice but I really don't think I'd buy one personally as a dedicated thrash metal type guy. Based on numerous reviews I've watched here including one from you all on the DSL20hr I would far rather buy the dsl20 as that thing sounds hard as hell all on its own without any effects at all in front of it which for me is somewhat of a necessity , I need to be happy with how the amp sounds on its own with zero external effects for me to consider buying it and the dsl20 based on the reviews seems like it can hold it's own in that aspect , especially for the classic thrash metal type stuff I'm into, bonus is it's like half the price of this amp you tested here.

cathode biased amps have a squishy more saturated sound..if its more metal-y sounding thats probably why..ive been on the fence about getting one of these, because the whole point of a marshall is the crisp tight way it holds together. when overdriven ...great detail .....that old fixed bias corcuit has a lot to do with that. on the other hand the 5 watt setting on a master volume amp might be really useful for me these days...my days of cranking a 100 watt marshall are over

You said it yourself, “I have three other JCM800s, and I have no use for this”. My sentiments exactly. Some things are better left alone. And that little crunch box ain’t no legit 800. It sounds a ‘feels’ small, doesn’t react the way the real 800 does. And if it can’t pull that off at 20 watts, it’s useless.
