So far this is the most interesting show Disney has put out, they didn't cut corners with the cast of characters and are not afraid to follow the comics. It isn't the typical cookie cutter Disney show, and I love it. Really love your enthusiasm its infectious. c:
I'm glad that they're actually consulting people who care about the history of the characters and the lore. It's such a relief to hear that they've finally started hiring people who know about what came before.
And to think, all they had to do was care about the source material and make some smart decisions. In comparison to what we've been getting, it's damn near perfect. At this point, it's probably safe to say the rest of the show will continue with the quality. However, now that the show runner has been......removed mysteriously......it's more about worrying for the future, but at least we got this far.
I became an X-Men fan sometime in 1981, but I was too young to get it back then. Finally got to snag a few issues in 1985 and stuck with it until 1990 or so when all the cross-over stuff went into overdrive around the time of X-tinction Agenda. I never watched the old animated show, I had no desire to … but your enthusiasm for this series makes me want to watch it.
Your assessment of the show was spot on… I was nervous about it; prior to its premiere… I have been pleasantly surprised and I am looking forward to where they go with it! I am excited for its success
I agree with your enjoyment. I've been pleasantly surprised. However, I do think that they resolved the story too quickly, but overall the show has been fun to watch.
Remember when Rogue took Carols powers permanently if was a mistake and she hated it. She took in portions of Carol. I think that is how they brought Danvers back from the dead actually.
Even though I'm not liking '97 much, it's clear that many are. I hope Disney learns the right lessons from its success. The unceremonious sacking of the showrunner is... interesting.
They have thrown out the one that put the show together, so no mater what anyone thinks, it has a likely going to have the floor knocked out of it for further seasons.
over sexualization is one hundred percent the 90s. it was over exaggeration of all features. you got some muscles, nah, you are a beefcake. that said, I am shocked they would put a saucy girl into the show, like at all. Ok, I can dig it. so long as there are saucy girls, and beafy men, I will try it.
I personally think this show is just slightly above good but not great. Something like an 8/10. It feels very faithful and the animation is an improvement over the original. This is not nostalgia bait like The Force Awakens was, it is a direct continuation of the original show. I feel this show is slightly more mature which is great. The tone is great. The personal struggles like the original are great. The action is great. However, my minor issues with the show are the following : Why is Bishop in our timeline instead of his own? What on earth is the back story between Rogue and Magneto? Did I miss something? Why does Morph now appear different? Storm losing her powers from a gun felt very contrived and so did Sinisters mind control over the Jean clone. One minute she's good then next, evil. I feel the third episode should have been stretched over two episodes. Sinister barely does anything. It glosses over Cyclops' dilemma that he has been loving a clone this whole time. Who does he really love? Madelyne is the real mother. Also, Madelyne just abandoned her child to another woman? Isn't she devastated about this? These are not deep issues at all but they are there. Bear in mind I'm 38 now whereas before I was about 10 I think so my expectations are higher. I think 8 is a fair score. If you're a fan of Xmen it's a must watch.
I don't understand your suggestion for Rogue to control her powers by stealing Magneto's power to be immune to her. Isn't that a logical paradox? She can't take it from him unless it stops working.
Magneto generates a magnetic field around him in order to touch rogue: it’s something he has to do by choice. If he wasn’t doing it, rogue could take his powers and generate her own magnetic field to touch whoever she wants
X-men97 is fantastic. I watched the original when i was a kid back when it was first on Fox and it brought me right back like it was never cancelled. This is the best thing Disney has put out in a long time and i was really impressed they didnt water it down. Goblin Queen is perfect and I need me more Sinister. This episode easily could have been a two parter or more but they did it so well im happy and content as i can be. More x-men 97 im here for it.
I enjoyed it, well enough. I do think the breakneck pacing works to the show's detriment. Allowing the subplots to play out over a few episodes, dropping clues, here and there, would make the episodes more impactful. We went through years of storytelling, and character development in thirty minutes, like they doubted they would be allowed the requisite time to tell the stories they want to tell. That seems odd, given that Disney can air as many episodes as they like, and with all the money they've wasted on lesser material, it's unfortunate that we are having to rush through some of the best material Marvel has to offer.
The amount of infantile rage people had about Rogue’s ass not being massive in a single frame honestly just made it impossible to take some detractors seriously Most of the negativity I’ve seen of the show just comes from two camps; one that justifiably talks about how the pacing is too rushed (which is pretty much an industry problem atm) and people trying to insist the show is woke, and therefore bad. Like there’s people trying to bend over backwards to hate the show cus Morph uses NB pronouns or because X-cutioner’s speech reminds them a bit too much of their own opinions on minorities, as if a load of detractors can’t fathom a show being good if it doesn’t politically agree with them.
That issue with Callisto and Storm on the cover is great. I still remember Callisto abducting Warren to make him her Morlock king. Ororro showed up and Callisto threatened to cut off Angel's pin feathers so that he would never fly again if Storm used her powers. Storm was powerless at the time (but didn't tell Callisto that) so she challenged Callisto for leadership of the Morlocks. She basically engaged in a knife fight to save Angel. I might be remembering it a little wrong, but I remember falling more in love with Storm in that issue.
Damn people in the comments can’t be happy for once huh. First season is good despite all the dooming and people immediately start dooming about the second season
You're clearly in the honeymoon phase 😋. I'm not ready to marry this series yet, (How could I cheat on Shogun like that?) but yea, so far so good. And though I definitely feel they could have at least gotten a 2-parter out of the Jean clone plot, I thought the episode was handled well
I had my doubts I really did but after watching it I was surprised Marvel pulled it off. I hope they can keep the momentum going and maybe Marvel can do a comeback with better movies and shows. They should do more stand alone content.
I have yet to watch any of X-Men 97, so I'm going to add this to my "Watch Later" list and come back to it. Oh, and for anyone wondering WHY I haven't watched it, it's just because my brother and sister are both interested as well so we all agreed to watch it together, but we've each had our own stuff going on so we've had trouble finding a time when all three of us are available to watch it.
Hey Jesterbell are you going to review more comics? would be interested to know your thoughts on grant morrisons new xmen run and house of x powers of x
I suspect full of DEI with Morph as the main character since it's confirmed that Morph is a they/them. But since Disney is also hemorrhaging money they might hire him back.
@@aqueous5099 lol, only complaint? Have you seen what DEI has done to the hot garbage Disney films has been pumping out lately and the affect its had at the box office?? Tell me you know nothing about Disney without telling me you know nothing about Disney.
Fully agree, and I am hoping the show stays on course with what its doing. Personally I always felt (outside of a few instances) X-men always is just better produced than any of the other Marvel properties.
I have never been able to get into X-men. I have tried to for the past 35 years. It just puts me to sleep. To me, it's like a super powered soap opera.
Read a fan theory that Madelyn prior is the real Jean and Jean gray is the clone which is why her dna was older - the clone was older and only has memories of being on a slab.
i loved and hated the OG xmen cartoon. I love and hate this cartoon. its perfect. Now they just need to bring Earths Mightiest back as if Avengers assembled never happened. Oh, I just remembered I didnt finish What if S2.
My only complaint about the show so far is they’re putting too much into every episode. They’re going to run out of stuff before long I fear. Plus to hurry things along there are plot devices. Beast knew in 30 seconds who the clone was. Beast knew in 30 seconds who cloned her. Morph knew right were to find the clone and the baby.
The inferno storyline in the comics was a sh!t show. It sucked. It heralded in the decline of the X-men series. Read the mutant massacre and the tie in books. The best stuff.
I'm not going to watch this. I barely remember the first X-Men cartoon (just a small snippet from the Phoenix saga) and just don't feel the nostalgia, I remember X-Men: Evolution better.
Hey Jester let’s say this show was completely rubbish (which it’s obviously not although it’s also not exciting me as it may others) you’re still allowed to love it regardless of what people tell you. It just happens that this show has pulled off some quality episodes. If it hadn’t and you still enjoyed it, then that’s perfectly awesome. I keep hearing how CW DC shows are awful but I never pay much attention. The first 2 seasons of the Flash are better with more heart than any high budget Marvel show of recent times. See once again, I’m allowed to love CW DC shows even though many mock them.
0:40 Yeah. They have learned their lesson. Don't front-load all the D.E.I. garbage at the start. Wait until they are invested before the bait-and-switch.
Rather than oversexualised, I think the difference with the Goblin Queen is control. Sure she was being influenced, but everything about her felt like she was in control of her sexiness and not being an object. Ahe felt powerful and confident, and that is cool for a female character.
I'm reserving judgement until the whole season is over. I got way too excited about Ahsoka, especially up to episodes 4, 5, and 6 where it really felt fun, then the last two episodes really ticked me off with how underwhelming they were.
I've seen more than a few videos that say '97 is good. I'm not going to watch it any time soon. I'm done with Disney and I'm with Marvel. Actually, I left Marvel first, back in the early 2000s. It was the MCU that brought me back and then, after Endgame, I left Disney Marvel. At this point in my life, I'm over Disney and Marvel. It will take more than one cartoon series to bring me back. The comics have been bad for decades and at some point the cartoon will start pulling most of their stories from them.
Classic X-Men before the 2000s were around before the mcu or disney buying marvel. those comics are legendary and way better than anything the mcu or fox have put out in 24 years.
When making a good, faithful show is now subversive

Always great content from Jesterbell. Love the new X-Men 97 so far 🎉❤😊
This is the best thing since Netflix Daredevil.
I also think that Rogneto is a misdirect.
Oooh. I have that first comic in Swedish from when it first came out.
Madelyne Pryor is basically Mileena before 2009. Props to her for getting to Cyclops first. She wounded Emma Frost's pride.
