  • This video shows the life of the Chinese in Semarang, Indonesia for 6 century, and tells the beginning of the Chinese coming to Indonesia and starting to settle and earn a living in Indonesia. In fact, Chinese came here from the Han Dynasty, but this area was not called the country of Indonesia at that time. At that time they just came to trade or stopped to continue their journey to India to learn Buddhism. The arrival of the Chinese who finally began to settle in the Nusantara Islands, or now known as the Indonesian archipelago country, was recorded during Zheng He's voyage, known as Zheng He Xia Xi Yang ( 郑和下西洋). But because the Chinese who came at that time were all men, they married local women and were assimilated, so that their descendants now have difficulty distinguishing their Chinese appearance. Later, starting in the 17th century, a small group of Chinese came to Indonesia from Fujian and Guangdong provinces. They are generally Chinese businessmen. The biggest wave of Chinese immigration to Indonesia occurred from the middle of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. They were sent by the Qing government to work in plantations and mining industries in the Dutch colonies. At that time, the Chinese settlements were concentrated in an area called Chinatown, which was deliberately separated by Dutch colonists so that it was easier for them to monitor these Chinese and prevent them from fighting with the Dutch. After Indonesia's independence in 1945, the Indonesian government banned all forms of Chinese culture in 1966, including preventing Chinese people holding activities related to Chinese culture and habits. Since then, all Chinese schools have also been banned. As a result, the generation born in 1960 and above can no longer speak Chinese and do not know much about Chinese culture. Currently they no longer live in the Chinatown area. But living in residential areas or communities, most of them can no longer see the Chinese atmosphere and Chinese architecture such as temples. On the contrary, there are many catholic and Christian church buildings in the community, which are inhabited by the younger generation of Chinese in Semarang today.
