Premier: *I use the Nas to create the Nas*
Edit: "Nas is like life or death. I'm a rebel. My poetry's deep, I never fell. Nas is like, half man half amazing. No doubt." - Ghandi 2021
LMFAOOOOO
Hahaha ironic but true
chur
😂😂😂
Yeah it's called... Nas is like
premier took such small portion of the sample. Hes a genius
@@officialhb4794 bruh dont promote
this is beacause his machine just sample like 60s something like that.. thats genius shit!
@@josealzate8270 he wished it had as much as 60s! Most classic premo beats were made on an sp1200 with max 10 seconds at full sample rate.. and max of 2.5 seconds per pad...even the mpc60 only had a max of 26seconds...we used to speed records up on the decks then slow them down in the sampler to increase sample time...but that made the samples dirtier all early producers were forced to chop samples into smaller chunks...whether they wanted to or not...necessity is mother of invention as they say :) the chopped up samples and dirty gritty audio quality is part of the beauty of "golden era" hip hop
This tells you about his workflow, going to try to play this game with some other good samples. Interested to know how he comes up with splits for his samples
its a dope beat but its not genius flip. the melody and the chops are right there. even on sp1200 with heavily limited sample time, this is not genius beat. its a really dope beat
Dj premier sampled nas own songs for another track of him. That's genuis
Eeeeh that's the most common thing in Old School hiphop...............
@@Skejtboard really... ok didn't know
@@davymugire8581 It wasnt for the "beat", it was for the scratch "chorus". Scratching different type of (mostly) hiphop songs for the chorus, including songs from the same artist, is one of the fundemental parts of boom bap. It's way easier nowadays though when you can scratch mp3's (or other files) with Serato, Traktor or other software but back then you had to have the real press. If you didnt have the acapella you filtered the song to your liking. Scratching is another artform in itself though.
DJ premier does this all the time
@@Skejtboard Facts... Can also be heard on a lot of Mobb Deep tracks with Hav sampling P
You forgot the chirping birds :) fascinating part of this beat that he made rhythm out of those birds in intro
Honestly what producer has successfully used chirping birds like primo. The dude is a certified genius.
@@sinetwo true, even j cole might have had influence to use the birds like primo did, he used birds on no role modelz
@@amrit-2865 there’s a genius deconstructed of the producer that made no role modelz beat talking about how Cole made him put the bird sounds in that track, always makes me smile
The channel shows only the songs (mostly) that were used
I wish more hip hop music today incorporated scratching. Hallmark of the 90s that deserves to come back!
It's one of the lost elements of hip-hop and I'll tell you why. It requires actual practice and skills, something this new generation severely lacks because they're lazy. They just jump on a mic and mumble some nonsense to a weak drumkit a baby could make with his rattle and these record companies label it hip-hop then this lazy generation just gobbles it up because that's what they've been programmed to like. You can't just jump on the wheels of steel and become a master the way you can just throw something down on your computer by accident and make a trap beat. You gotta have Skillz...
@@UndergroundRap4eva oldheads be like
@@UndergroundRap4eva If it's so easy, please do it. Also, scratching requires more skill than making a beat? since when
@@UndergroundRap4eva you never made a beat in your life
I've listened to how producers have flipped hundreds(if not thousands) of samples and theres only three that I can't wrap my head around...this one(I have no idea how Premo heard the potential of a beat from this), second is Busta's Everything Remains Raw(Easy-Mo Bee said that beat was created from a ONE note sample, and he can't even explain how he thought to flip it like that), and third is my vote for the best sample flip of ALL-TIME, and that would be the Herbie Hancock sample for Shook Ones Pt. II(How Havoc thought to use that particular few seconds of piano and lower the pitch of the first few notes then slightly increase the pitch of the remaining notes to get that classic riff is a feat of sampling I almost can't comprehend. All I can say is Havoc is either a genius or he was just messing around pitching random records and stumbled across it by sheer luck. Either way, he has a great ear for catching it
Drugs. A lot of these cats were admittedly high on something.
If you slice the sample to time you can load it in the MPC with each slice assigned to a pad, then you can play the sample like a keyboard. It's not like he heard the sample and thought "I'm gonna slice it this way so that I can have these notes", it's more like he heard the sample and liked the instrument so decided to slice it and then jam out some ideas that sounded good.
@@Guerilla_G I absolutely agree with you to a large extent. Sampling is difficult but when you reverse engineer some of these and get into the process Most of the mysticism expressed by people that might not have tried it disappears. This one is not mystical at all for me.
It's like you said... isolate the part you want...Slice it up. The pitch shifting might be done afterwards. Beats by JBlack can be seen doing this literally in real time on the Mpc 2500. However i will say that some of these producers Havoc included and J Dilla, Primo etc do most definitely hear the arrangement before chopping. This I've read in interviews of people that worked with Dilla. He already Knew (at least sometimes) How he wanted the beat to sound before chopping it.
I think in the sampling community online and on RUclips this is an aspect of the art that is not spoken about at all.
It's like on the guitar there are people that know how they want the notes they play to sound before playing then and others lead with the fingers.
THC
one that amazes me more then this is Dont cry by Dilla that’s the greatest sample chop of all time imo can’t understand how he chopped it that way
Premier is a genius. Once in a lifetime
For anyone asking about the “forgetting birds” part of the song, it’s a Don Robertson sample from a jazz record. This John Rydgren and Bob way record they’re showing here is a gospel record.
I am waiting for the Nas and Preemo album. Nas do it!
I remember reading an article on them like 15 years ago or something, maybe it was Scratch. They were supposed to do the album together. I don’t know what they’re waiting for!
@@Nickpetronio facts also didn't he want to do an entire dre produced album too? that would be bananas to do both nas and preemo or nas and dre omg 😳
Considering how PRhyme turned out this could be very very good
@@MyDogSteppedOnaBeee I mean, we do have The Firm: The Album with Nas, AZ and Foxy Brown with Dre and the Trackmasters producing it
Illmatic features preemo atleast 3 times, no?
Premo is good at choppin certain parts in songs and making a chorus from it. he's done it many times and it always comes out good.
gold*
This Song opened my doors for Boom Bap wholheartedly - Thank you Premo and Thank you Nas - ONE LOVE
Premo is a goddamn genius it cannot be stated enough
I think "I Am" gave Nas his finest Preemo beats. NY State of Mind Part II is also a masterpiece and an example of a great sequel to an already iconic beat.
DJ Premier - a true genius
Man !!!! The Old school ms was art that can never be forgotten!!! The samples flipping techniques from the different songs of it!!! Like 🔥🔥 Straight a Masterpiece from all the Sounds hell shout out to The Legend DJ Premier
Oh my god, this track still affects me so very strongly! I fell in love with it from day one, I still feel the same way!
And "It ain't hard to tell " by Nas which he has used to sample this song, is also sampled by using Michael Jackson's "Human Nature"
The Orchestrated version of Nas Is Like is so chilll
I can only think of 2k20 when I hear this
It was in 2k18
Can't believe he was gonna throw it away 😭 Thank God he didn't 😂🙏
One of my all time favorite piece of loops. Thanks a for this!!!

i def like this type of editing with the samples as opposed to the newer style you guys have done, imo. All have been fantastic forsure.
Love these videos
Tracklib the mvp.
And the “nas” at the beginning of the first hook is actually Biz Markie and he’s not even saying Nas - it is him saying “recognize” and Premo chopped the “nize”
To me that's what makes the best super crazy how do you reaccount one word and then take the end of the work and chop to Nas, like how lol
bro your job it's just amazing
Love your videos.
When I feel down or need inspiration I can always come to this channel.

I was definitely not around when music like this was the forefront of Hip Hop and Rap, but looking back, this might be my favorite. DJ Premier's work is amazing.
Make one video of mobb deep hell on earth
Couid you do Capone-N-Noreaga - Invincible ?
0:30 That’s a sample of All eyez on me by 2pac isnt it?
They sampled the same track never gonna stop by linda Clifford. Released within the same year idk which was done 1st but we possibly offered their beats around the same time because they both came out 96
Preemo is the GOAT producer in the East Coast Hip-hop!!!
Left out the birds sample
