    I have one like the red the ohuhu rotary punch you show in the video and I traced the anvil and cut out a piece of 11oz veg tan and it works extremely well and the punch tips remain in good condition and the leather anvil(instead of the plastic) is easy to replace.I do put bee wax which also helps the punch cut smoother..I bought my first my first one after watching this ...it has served me well ...I have a couple of different punches like this with oval and different size holes! (I saw this in the side bar and clicked)
    thanks a bunch!

    Yes !I have the red one which came with extra anvil disks and even a little screw driver to change the disks..It also came with a little round diamond file which I assume it for sharpening but I have yet to try to sharpen the little punches as I am not sure how to approach sharpening punches.I do put a little bee wax on all my punches.I bet you have a video for sharpening punches ..I will look for it!

    Hi Harry, I also have the cheap one an experience the punch not sitting squarely on the anvil. One solution is to remove the ratchet spring and elongate the screw fastening hole. You can then adjust the position of the punch. It is still however a cheap tool. Yours suggestions are on my Christmas list. Thanks.

    It's like in every trade, if you do something professionally, do not skim on quality of the tool. But if you need for few minor applications, cheap tool sometimes is a saviour. Thanks for info.

    It helps a bit if you back up the piece of leather you are punching with another scrap of leather. It protects the anvil from getting chewed up by the punch and it keeps the punch from crunching directly into the anvil.

    I just discovered and subscribed to your channel and have watched a few videos so far. Great stuff.
    I have one or two of the cheapie ones. Mine line up properly; I must have gotten lucky. I don't use it often but I really like the ones you showed with compound leverage and may have to upgrade one of these days.

    Hi Harry, I love your videos they are so informative. I have a question if I may, I am wanting to make heavy-duty leather dog leads. I am having trouble punching through 3 pieces of 3.5mm leather. I need to aline the holes exactly to rivet with brass double cap rivets. Any help greatly appreciated, Thank you.

    • @harryrogers
      @harryrogers  5 лет назад

      Hi that is a bit of an ask thickness wise...a high quality Dixon...and probably Osborne punch might just do it without the top layer getting a too big hole from the tool taper...probably better to hole two at once and then pin mark the third layer and do that seperately.

    I'd be interested to know what tools you use for eyelets, the cheap one I have just doesn't work and is really frustrating to try and use.

    Will this work on a canvas watch strap like the stock one on the Hamilton khaki field hand wind? Thanks!

    • @harryrogers

      Probably not fine enough...not that I am familiar with the watch strap you mention. Mini punches are probably the way to go...see my video on making a 200 year old watch strap.

    Thanks for the video, I need an extra hole to be cut into a leather watch strap but I don't really want to buy a hole puncher just to use once. Do you know any places in the UK that would cut it for me (someone who knows what they are doing) for a reasonable price?

    So one question, do you not prefer the "manual" style of punches? Where you need a mallet to hammer out the hole. Or just for the sake of simplicity do you prefer the rotary style of punch makers? Sorry i didnt quite understand your take on the other type of punches. Do they come out any cleaner regardless of what type you use?
    Thanks and a double thanks as you are a wealth of info for leather my friend! Just watched ir videos on making leather shoes!

    Can't abide this rotary punches, much prefer a proper punch, I think even a cheap set works better. Good to know they do make some decent versions though.

  • @keyote3
    @keyote3 7 лет назад

    I had a decent set like these many years ago, but, lending tools brings a nasty flavour in the mouth when they are never returned. My pliers/punch had a floating, ball bearing mounted anvil which lined the cutting edges up perfectly, but it has gone now.... if I could find the make again, I would invest some money. I think they were of German manufacture.. !

    So if the cheaper one is aligned it's not a bad value for money as it does the job. Depends what you need it for really. I had some belts needed to cut to my waist size. Also DSL makes those power assisted one they are going for £6 on ebay and Amazon

    Do you ever have to sharpen a punch , if so how do you do it

    • @harryrogers
      @harryrogers  4 года назад

      They tend to almost self sharpen with the stropping effect of the leather, but a fine diamond file would restore an edge if needed.
