As a Registered nurse, I’ll be working Christmas Eve & Christmas Day, but I’m ok with it. Patients don’t get to choose when they get sick. They need care too.
My son followed me into the nhs and will be working xmas day and new years eve too. Thinking of everyone who will be working, i know what its like i did if for years. Thankyou for all your hard work❤
Over various Christmas’s over the years I’ve helped at a council run care home and cooked at a homeless shelter. Some of the best days I’ve had and really reminds us to count our blessings xxx
You are SO RIGHT! All of those precious people deserve our kindness and gratitude. I may have missed you saying it but we can add in all the postal delivery people. God Bless Them for bringing our packages to us or sending them off to our friends and families.
Think you for remembering these folks. My state, North Carolina was the most impacted. It is devastatingly. It will be a long time in recovery. Thank you, Jane for your thoughtful words. We are in a situation with a family member who has untreated mental illness. This is a difficult time for many people.
I make a big point of choosing to be super patient and happy in the shops, especially my local supermarkets. I let people in front of me in the queue and make point of being nice to the checkout staff xx

For the last 2 years christmas has been difficult for our family, mum died unexpectedly (a fit 93 year old) in December 2022 & my husband again unexpectedly in november 2023. With the wonderful support of our friends, family, church & community we managed both funerals before Christmas & were able to celebrate the season quietly together, remembering them both. We are all celebrating together again this year & are grateful for each other & all the ongoing kindness of our friends, family & comunity. Nothing helps as much as a quick call, hug or just being there for each other. There will be a few moments of sadness but lots of joy too. T.
We were inspired by your videos, and actually returned some gifts we had purchased. Instead as a family, we are gifitng the funds to a local animal shelter where we volunteer. Feels a lot better to help than having items we dont really need
We are retired in our 70’s. We have enough to be comfortable and to share during the holidays. We both enjoy choosing a child or two from the giving tree and fulfilling a wish for them. It warms our hearts ❤️ We also increase our monetary donations to the food bank during November and December. Food is not a luxury and you never know who needs a little boost. Thank you for your gentle reminders about kindness❤
Christmas is bittersweet for me. My dear brother passed away some years ago leaving a wife and 2 young boys. My brother's birthday was on Christmas day. We have had the pleasure of seeing his boys grow up to be fine, successful young men. They are both spitting images of him. They even have the same mannerisms as him. My brother would be so proud of what his boys have become. As we celebrate Christmas , with the family, it always has a special meaning for us. We miss my brother, love him and know he is with us in spirit. Blessings to all at Christmas.
Many are not remembered especially during this special holiday......reach out and let those folks know they are important and remembered, a word doesn't cost anything 😊💜
Another great Vlogmas video, Jane and Mike! I work at a public school in WA state and I’m thinking of our many families who are struggling to pay bills to keep heat, internet on, to make car and/or rent payments. The struggle is very real for so many people these days. Our school specifically sends out mailings and info with resources at the holidays because the need is so great.
Excellent points on society’s support folks. I work hard especially during holidays to be nice and patient with workers, even if it’s hard to do and I’m running late, because I’m not stuck having to work as they are. Good reminder, Jane.
Wow, such a heart warming and important message, this is what the holidays are really about, being kind and compassionate. I am thinking about a woman who lives in her car and who sometimes parks on my block. I am seeing on social media so many people who are doing and documenting that, it's alarming, people can no longer afford housing. I am thinking of all the people I see standing in line of food pantries, food security is a huge issues for more and more people. We have a neighborhood "buy nothing" group and I just donated 2 large boxed of wheat products (my husband and I no longer eat wheat) to a single mother and 3 large bags of Judaica items to a Jewish family. It feels good to give, especially if it's items you already have that someone else can enjoy. Wishing you and Mike and happy Christmas and cuddles to your little girls.
I am thinking of my neighbor who is in the military overseas leaving sick elderly parents and young wife. We already sent him a card and homemade cookies. We are thinking of our fast food workers who are working hard every day at minimum wage including Christmas. I am making a batch of brownies to take in for their workers and a nice card. I am thinking of some elderly people with families in another country. my husband just gave him a pen to do his crossword puzzle today and I will be taking baked goods when we meet him at our local gas, coffee, convenience stop. Some just need a hug or a kind word! Many stop me and tell me their tales of woe! I take the time because they need to unburden to someone. We all need each other! That is real giving!
I used to work in telephone care as a nurse and I always dreaded this time of year. There were a lot more suicidal/depressed calls. When I worked in the hospital I usually just worked on the holidays because I was divorced and my ex used to make it difficult to actually plan anything. We always had our holidays on a weekend before or after.
I have a special thought for the children of separated parents and for one of the two parents who also suffers, as in your case; there are many. It is a very sad time for all the people you care about, with health problems and/or depression. I always had a thought for all those whose holidays are a suffering. I wish you a Happy Christmas 2024!
Someone who is dear to me used to work at Starbucks over the Christmas holidays. It was common for her to come home sobbing because of the horrible things customers had said to her, usually about issues over which she had no control. I know people are grumpy before they've had their coffee, but it's not overly difficult to treat people with basic courtesy, even when you are very tired. Especially at Christmas.
I have 3 daughters and all of them can't wait till school finishes this week. 2 are teachers and one works at a university placing student teachers into schools. She will work a bit longer till holidays but they are all exhausted. I was in aged care so spent many a Christmas day caring for the elderly. Unfortunately many never received visitors from family.
It's all about managing expectations I guess. When I moved to Asia it took me years to feel Christmassy at all because there's no winter.😂❤ And now still in Asia I live in a Buddhist country, so rather little Christmas though there are decorations in the malls. It's what I make of it and I'm fine with that!😊 I talked to my grandson who lives in the Philippines yesterday and he says, you know grandma, the four months of Christmas! Not joking, they start in September and decorate to the high heavens.😅😂
I was a nurse and other members of the family are miners so chaotic shifts are the norm throughout the year. Then by choice I migrated to Australia 🇦🇺, so thanks for the internet 🛜. The net makes communication with international relatives easier✔️ Christmas for me is catching up when there is an opportunity 😊 and enjoying the moment 👍😊 Thank you Jane and Mike for the lovely vlogmas chat. Pats to the pooches 🐶
Thank you for mentioning all these people and jobs who get pushed to their limits during Christmas. I work in retail. It's testing most of the time, but Christmas is hell. Each Christmas gets worse with every shift being a struggle despite us going out of our way for customers who can't even be bothered to show basic manners😢
My husband works in IT for a hospital. He finally gets Christmas off this year, but still has to work Christmas Eve. His coworkers will all be working on Christmas. I used to be a flight attendant, and I remember the Christmas I spent working the hardest flight and coming back to an empty apartment. I'll also be thinking about the people who have members of their family who are difficult to be around. My dad is an addict who drinks too much on Christmas, and I end up doing all of the cooking and cleaning while he and his wife watch TV. So we've stopped going to his house, but then there's the guilt trip I get for not going. I know there are many people out there with situations like mine, or much worse.
Thinking of everyone who has a rough time at Christmas because of money, work or family / relationships. I'll be thinking of my son overseas and hoping he'll not feel the pain of separation too acutely.
Thank you for this, Jane, we need to remember that this time of year can be difficult for many. My young Granddaughter works in retail and will only get Christmas day off. She says how horrible some people can be to the staff. Recently a man was being beaten up in the store and she rushed to his aid, pushing the assailants away (3 men) and shouting at them to stop. She's 5ft 3 and very slender. I was so proud of her but it terrifys me what she is exposed to. Angie
My daughter and I just delivered a bagful of kitten/cat goodies to our local feral cat rescue.😊 They put out a wish list of supplies for the kitties and we obliged...❤ Merry Christmas!
I worked as a nurse and became totally comfortable celebrating on a time or day different than the traditional culture. When I look back, it was Christmas…and I don’t say that was 12/27 etc. Actually the only one who pulled that complaint was my mother-in-law. Oh well. Thank you for this Jane and Mike. There are so many folks who struggle at Christmas and it is wonderful you recognized and acknowledged them.
You are so welcome!
