We purchased an Amazon flute for my daughter when she started band in 6th grade 2017. Fast forward to today 6 years later it finally gave out. We did maintenance on it after each marching season and it even took her to 1st chair district band. She named it Eleanor. So Eleanor is retired now.
As someone who hasn't played an instrument in over a decade, with no intentions of doing so really. I don't know how I came upon this video - but totally appreciate your fair and unbiased review on this cheap instrument. Lol.
I purchased a glory flute for my daughter when she first started playing the flute in fourth grade she’s now a junior in high school, and she’s been using the same glory flute. Today one of her bandmates dropped it and I have to replace it only because of the drop. It really was a great flute and all of her band teachers have always been shocked at the sound quality.
I played years ago, and thinking of getting one. Was in a high school band and used their instruments. A relative gave me one on loan, which I used for over a decade, but eventually wanted it back for another family member. I had the pads replaced and had an electric pickup Which I included when I returned it to the owner. This flute in your video would be occasional instrument to take out to play. My wife likes to sing, so this would be a way to include myself in that interest. Great review.
I like that you think I sounded like an oboe! Godard Allegretto is a very standard piece and you can find the free sheet music here: imslp.org/wiki/Suite_de_trois_morceaux%2C_Op.116_(Godard%2C_Benjamin) I also highly recommend the other two movements of this suite. 🎶😍
Our daughter decided she wanted to be in band for 6th grade. She's never played an instrument, and went for a fitting and evaluation and decided on the flute. We purchased this Glory flute before we decide to rent to own a more (much more!) expensive instrument. It should arrive tomorrow. Thank you SO much for this detailed review! It has been immensely helpful.
I was looking to pick up a new instrument at the beginning of quarantine and ended up picking one of these up and learned the basics on it. It worked pretty well honestly, though I upgraded after a few months and found it much easier to play in the upper register. For the price, if you have realistic expectations about what you're getting, I think these are pretty neat.
Yeah, I started playing on a Glory flute in 4th grade in the 2019-2020 year, when covid struck. And then i went back in 6th grade, so i played it for 2 years. I upgraded to a Yamaha student model flute, and i wasn’t really able to get to the upper register, which my yamaha does.
Or just going to your pawn shop. Excellent review. I played the flute when I was a kid and want to try it out again after playing the guitar for several years. I now think I will get a used one to try out. If it doesn’t work for me, I’ll just donate it to my local middle school.
Pretty nice work here Lance! I've been thinking about buying an Amazon/Temu/AlilExpress flute due to the low range price of this instruments. I use to play piano and guitar at home with my kids, so after watching this video I've decided to buy a flute. I'll upload videos of my learning process. Thanks a lot.
This is proof that mass production is the king of just about everything we buy and own. Now one can buy the best and most costly of anything, some things as with most things are over priced. I don't see with flutes how they need to be more than 1k for a good one. There is a jazz flute player in my area here in Detroit and she is amazing along with being a great sheet music reader of any style she said "I never pay more than $1700.00 for a flute even though I can afford to.
Singularly one of the best review video of these category of flutes that I have viewed! Very well done! Subscribed! Also the white gloves are for those who will use this instrument in a marching band. They get free marching band white gloves.
I got this exact flute on Amazon (the listing was $89.99, not $78.99, but still relatively cheap) as my first one, and it arrived Saturday afternoon. I'm just learning how to play, but I think the closest thing to that I actually know how to play is one of those plastic recorders. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for posting such an indepth review. I am getting this for my daughter's first flute. She will be starting 6th grade in a few weeks. I enjoyed your playing very much. Excellent job.

Please post the second part of this series. I’m considering a Mendini Cecilio as a practice instrument. I have my original silver flute that’s 52 years old. I haven’t played in 30 years so before I invest big $$$ in reconditioning, I’d like to see how well I still play and if I want to work on building my skills again. This Glory looks good, but I’d like an open hole with a B-foot. Thanks!
Great! Let me know how it goes. Sorry part 2 didn’t come sooner. Unfortunately the air conditioning in my studio broke and that set me back a few weeks. Will get on it ASAP though. Thanks for watching!!
@@reneenospam Hello. I was wondering if you could comment on how the open holed version has been for you? I am considering it as a replacement for my current flute.

Good review. One guy on the internet said to people you have to pay a $500+ to buy your first flute. I totally disagree with him. Not only is it expensive esp. if you do not stick with it, its a waste of money. I never bought very expensive instruments and they have stood the test of time, i have piano, guitar, drums, trumpet and now the a flute. Of course at the start of musical learning i got a really cheap guitar, wrong size and just a bad guitar £30 any one. It looks good on the wall the though. I then got a C40 classical guitar for £85 over 11 years ago which is worth £124 now. The guitar was and is brilliant and i still have it. i did get an encore electric guitar set which is ok to start with. I eventally got an epiphone guitar which looks great, poor finish, damn neck heavy. What that means the guitar will drop down from the guitar head stock as your trying to play it. I had to varnish the guitar to keep the finish. The electronics were great though but not the tuners. I then got ibnez grgr221pa-aqb gio guitar. Damn thats a long name. This is the best guitar ever had even (though i did the like the fender squire cheap knock off in red). I have a yammaha accoustic which i bought off ebay and that is a fantastic guitar, plus a12 string guitar that guitar is great, lovely low action and nice sound. Also i have a gear4u piano which is fantastic for the price. The drums were cheap but with a good drum speaker it sounds great. All are basic instruments along with my student Bb trumpet. The problem with brass trumpets you have to keep oiling them or the valves get stuck or rub- and they dent easy ( did that to my trumpet grr). I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy my instruments and my kids get to use them if they wanted. Oh i have ukeleles too which my son loves.
Thank you for the great video. Buying a flute to reacquaint myself (from high school days gone bye) has been on my mind, so to find your channel is most helpful and you obviously know your stuff. Thank you for the great review and detailed information. I will watch your next video on the Mendini flute. In school I played a Yamaha - I loved it and I remember it having a rich warm and soulful sound and tone. I have to say that this one did not sound like that - although it was good - probably because of your skill which pushed it somewhat. I hope to find out what is the least I would need to spend in order to obtain a rich tone a lay person could still be proud of. ha.!
Great review, Lance. I'm a tuba player and got a weird itch to try learning the flute. I came across the Glory flute on Amazon and thought Id get one so I can try it out with spending a lot of money on it. Your review led me to get one as it seems to be the perfect flute for my needs. It'll be quite a disaster change to go from a tuba to a flute, I would imagine 😆
Good luck with you new adventure. I will give a little disclaimer. As a flute player myself, I think you'll be surprised just how much air it takes. It common for beginners beginning flute players to get very light headed.
I've ordered a flute from Fingerhut which will arrive to me around the 25th. With my asthma and COPD I was told to buy a wind instrument to strengthen my lungs. The saxophone requires too much air so I opted for a flute because it doesn't require as much air to use.
Thank you so much for this helpful and thorough review!!! I'm just now coming across it and will be moving to the Mendini review next. I've been wanting to try flute for a few years, but I never got around to it. I play piano primarily along with a few other instruments for fun. This was one of the flutes I saw for beginners on a budget! Glad I found your channel!
Thank you very much for this review, dear Lance! I was choosing some flute for my student and I did't knew this brend. And I love your sarcarsm! Warm regards
Cupronickel - this answers the question about the gloves - some people are allergic to Nickel. Even e-guitar/bass players might be forced to use either gloves or strings of stainless steel to avoid reactions.
@@LanceSuzuki theres also the part that students in something like a marching band typicaly don't want to use their nice horn (in this case a flute) so maybe a Glory flute might be a great marching flute. Marching bands typicaly wear gloves for marching, and are most common in white (explains the color). They are also wearing gloves to protect the outside of the instrument from all that sweat and dirt on their hands, which especially comes out when one is running around a football field or doing a parade in the hot sun. From all the videos of "cheap" instruments the outside of these instruments aren't very good at keeping their laquer or coating, so the gloves prevent it from fading as well. I just thought i would add onto what Thomas said. Great video too edit: i had some spelling errors
Hey Lance, that was a great review. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I just subscribed and I can't wait to see more of your videos. 😊 I've always enjoyed playing my beginners soprano recorder. I play for fun and relaxation. I'm seriously considering an upgrading. Would the Glory flute have the notes l need to play Ave Maria?
Thanks! I have a Gemeinhardt which I love , but considered buying a GLORY simply because (forgive my superficiality) they come in different colors. Learned a lot from your video. Peace!
@@jasonreese4573 I have heard many Jethro Tull mentions. I aspire to play the 5 o'clock In Paris piece by a different artist. I have my original closed hole plus I upgraded to intermediate open hole... Nothing beats the Gemeinhardt sound for me but the fun is worth exploring the evolutionary sounds of the flute!
KLUVATIL, your way advanced than me , I'll probably never catch up at my age. PS Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull didn't realize he had the finger positioning all wrong until the 1990s! LoL
@@jasonreese4573 lol...I can imagine! I've been playing since childhood but self taught beyond my initial 2 years-so I consider myself an intermediate player. My Open-hole Gemeinhardt cost about $45.00 from a pawn shop and $150 in refurbishments. I adopted a tutor (my first ever) who encouraged me in 2021 to practice without plugs. So, I did it, and it took about 100 Days. I just uploaded a Christmas song playing on it. Felt good... Keep up your practicing...that's how we progress!
Thank you very much for this review! Your information about the little screw is very valuable, and I will explore this. I have found that many people will complain, and I am led to suspect that it relates to this element of needing minute adjustments.
I also tested out one of Amazon's cheap flutes. Yours came with a nicer case than mine! Lol. I bought one of the colorful flutes. It held up ok for about 6 months, but the Keys are cracking now.
@@LanceSuzuki The color is holding up ok. The crack specifically is on the trill key & it's the plating. It's a minor crack but we all know what happens to a minor crack... lol
Thank you for doing this. Absolutely live your humour, haha :-). How about getting a Star River Wooden flute and review new from the case and after a check at the tech.
@@LanceSuzuki yes, a boxwood one with B and Bb footjoint, Reform headjoint and plain headjoint, offset G and C# trill key. It was not playable below lowest G. So it’s with a tech now 😅. But as you can see on my amateur channel, my main flute is a Mopane Abell with inline G, B footjoint, got both Oval and Square headjoints and C# trill key. Absolutely a delight to play on an Abell. I think the gloves are for the to put on when you clean your flute so you don’t get fingerprints on it after you’re done cleaning it. 🤷🏾♂️I could be wrong.
The problem with cheap instruments is that you need to be good at gambling... sometimes they will surprise but they will last for a short time like it happened to my first flute... it lasted some couple of months with constant adjustments until the flute died...
Thank you for sharing because of your awesome video I will be purchasing this flute I wanted to ask how do you clean this Pacific flute on the outside with its material so it will not rust or anything like that
Thanx for the validation on my Glory flute purchase! I played for some small audiences ....they liked the sound! Plus I did practice diligently!Only one question...I can hit the high C. I can play low D flat ..but I can't seem to play low C....any suggestions? Any adjustments needed?
Hi Curt, It's hard to say without seeing the flute. However, my first guess would be that the Low C-C# connection might be off. Unfortunately, this is one of the connections without a screw adjustment. It is not easy to adjust without taking the footjoint apart, so definitely best left to a pro technician. Sometimes if you press on both the C# paddle and C roller (rather than just the roller) it can make this better. Good luck! Lance
My beloved gemeinhardt needs new pads, the flute is 20 years old and has been greatly loved 🥴. Looking at options of buying a new flute or new pads. It’s for a little community band I’ll be in.
Sometimes the old Gemeinhardts can be great. Other times it is not worthwhile to try to repair them. These cheap flutes are a good temporary solution but you probably want better quality for playing in band long term.
my first teacher told me to buy a $200usd flute. It is fine at first half year, after that i cannot play lower c d e f , and very hard to play any note. I thought it is my problem because I was a beginner at that time and it sometime works. this situation lasted a month and my second teacher (the first teacher is a really bad teacher she teach one page each lesson and play smartphone at the rest of time) told me to buy a new flute (~$800) and all problem is solved. using a cheap flute is not only waste of money, and also waste of time, and also waste of the lesson fee ($38 each lesson, $38*4...). at that time I thought i am not able to play good sound even though I have pay much effort and time to practice and I almost give up..
Lance Suzuki yes it really slippery and it makes me feel like I’m going to drop my flute. But my director used to let us cut the tops off so we wouldn’t drop it.
Now I wanna know would you or have you tried the open hole flute from the same brand. Right now I wanna try to play again. My old flute was a germeinhardt b foot. It was stolen from me when I was 19. I wanna try to get a b foot open hole flute.
I'm just a beginner but I'm surprised as a self proclaimed professional flutist that you dont know what the gloves are for. I have seen others playing flute with gloves and they say they are to help protect the instrument from getting tarnish making body oils off of it and also I think gloves look really sharp.
I'm almost finished with my 3rd year of flute and first of marching band and I have not once seen someone play with gloves on outside of marching band performances, and the gloves are for aesthetic/dress. Typically brass instruments use gloves for that sort of thing but I dont think flutes really need gloves

I want to see someone review one of the cheap open hole flutes.
I had one.
Open hole...B foot...Venus.
Sold it.
Really wish I hadn't.
It was really good tbh.
I hope to find out what is the least I would need to spend in order to obtain a rich tone a lay person could still be proud of. ha.!
Indeed, when I hear the words ´glory´ and ´hole´ in the same phrase, it is hard to keep a straight face.
@eylam9690 Indeed.😄
Thank you for this, we purchased this for our son to use in 5th grade band as an introductory instrument and received it today
👍 I hope he has a great experience in band and with the flute! Thanks for watching, Jason!
Your review was very helpful, thanks a lot.
2:32 I’m not sure if that was sarcasm or not but I’m pretty sure the gloves are for bands or something like that
Thanks for your video! I shared your video to someone who is interested in buying a flute on Amazon!☺️
Great! Thanks!
I've ordered a flute from Fingerhut which will arrive to me around the 25th. With my asthma and COPD I was told to buy a wind instrument to strengthen my lungs. The saxophone requires too much air so I opted for a flute because it doesn't require as much air to use.
Doesn't flute require the most air out of all the wind instruments?
I've payed only 60€ for an "EASTAR" closed flute, and I'm very happy with it...
Awesome! I hope the reviews can help you decide! Good luck with learning the flute. Very brave and admirable!
This is awesome! And your music is so amazing!
Thank you very much for this review, dear Lance! I was choosing some flute for my student and I did't knew this brend. And I love your sarcarsm! Warm regards
Thanks so much, Clara! ❤️
Cupronickel - this answers the question about the gloves - some people are allergic to Nickel. Even e-guitar/bass players might be forced to use either gloves or strings of stainless steel to avoid reactions.
Good point! There's still the lip plate though...
Great video too
edit: i had some spelling errors
Hey Lance, that was a great review. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I just subscribed and I can't wait to see more of your videos. 😊
I've always enjoyed playing my beginners soprano recorder. I play for fun and relaxation.
I'm seriously considering an upgrading. Would the Glory flute have the notes l need to play Ave Maria?
Thanks for watching and subscribing! ❤️ Despite its low price tag, I can confirm that this flute has all the notes you would need.
@@LanceSuzuki Wow! Thank you so much for your feedback. 🤗
This helped me unbox this flute, thank you!
I have managed to play with a nuvo flute, so hearing you I suposse it will work me perfectly for me.
Thanks! I have a Gemeinhardt which I love , but considered buying a GLORY simply because (forgive my superficiality) they come in different colors. Learned a lot from your video. Peace!
Gemeinhardt player here, interested for the exact same reason!
Hello. I had a Gemeinhardt in the 90s and recently bought another. It's a great product at a reasonable price. Love Jethro Tull!!
Excellent playing . .
Thanks so much, John!
Great review, Lance.
Thanks so much!
Thank you very much for this review!
Your information about the little screw is very valuable, and I will explore this. I have found that many people will complain, and I am led to suspect that it relates to this element of needing minute adjustments.
Yes. Small adjustments are usually necessary. Thanks for watching!
One can give the grease to a clarinetist if it's the same as cork grease. Otherwise, a brass player may be able to use it.
I also tested out one of Amazon's cheap flutes. Yours came with a nicer case than mine! Lol.
I bought one of the colorful flutes. It held up ok for about 6 months, but the Keys are cracking now.
What's cracking? The plating/coating on the keys? Yikes! Is the color part holding up okay? I read online that it can peel off.
Thanks, Jef! Star River is a bit out my price range for these projects, but looks beautiful. Do you own one?
@@LanceSuzuki yes, a boxwood one with B and Bb footjoint, Reform headjoint and plain headjoint, offset G and C# trill key. It was not playable below lowest G. So it’s with a tech now 😅.
But as you can see on my amateur channel, my main flute is a Mopane Abell with inline G, B footjoint, got both Oval and Square headjoints and C# trill key. Absolutely a delight to play on an Abell.
Would love to own a Hold flute for outside. I have a Yamaha 471, silver, for that atm.
I had to subscribe JUST because you put on those classes to "read" and most calmly said, "The library is open." I am DEAD!!!! (Yeah, I got that reference.) Anyway, I was subscribing anyway. Your videos are great! Thank you!
LOL. Thanks!
Very cool video thanks! Are you associated with the Suzuki music books at all?
hey lance! could you maybe do an armstrong flute (if you have one) VS one of your favorite flutes?
Can you please do a review for the silver plated Glory Open hole hand engraved 17 hole B-foot joint flute?
Hi Gina,
Thanks for watching! I will certainly look into that flute. It looks very pretty with the engraving!
Lance
@@LanceSuzuki Yes, it is a beautifully engraved flute! But I hope it sounds as good as it looks you know!
So timely!!!! I was wondering about the Glory and Mendini flutes I've seen on amazon. This video was extremely useful!!!!
Thanks so much! Thanks for watching. I love your channel!
@@LanceSuzuki Gosh, I'm humbled. Thank you. Could you review the Nuvo flute please?
it's not just glory flute, its glory closed hole flute, very dangerous name indeed
@oldcowbb 👍🏾😂
I think the gloves are for the to put on when you clean your flute so you don’t get fingerprints on it after you’re done cleaning it. 🤷🏾♂️I could be wrong.
Not bad sounding for an inexpensive instrument. I am impressed.
Overall, it’s a pretty good value for the money. Thanks for watching and for your comment!
The problem with cheap instruments is that you need to be good at gambling... sometimes they will surprise but they will last for a short time like it happened to my first flute... it lasted some couple of months with constant adjustments until the flute died...
Thanks for your video. It does Help on a buying decision.
Great! Best of luck with your new flute, which ever one you choose!
You are brilliant, I love how you explain in so much detail, but so simple.
Can we have a video about your flute, and why you choose it?
Thanks for a very informative video. I am interested to learn playing such a flute.
Oooh, special effects!
😂
Yes, it sounds good but how long will it last?
Thanks for the vid. Was super helpful!
Great! I'm glad it helped. Thanks for watching!
Are the gloves to clean the silver? To buff it up?😮
yeah, i love Glory holes
All the pros I’ve watched are like “what are these for?” Which was my thought when I first saw them. 😂😂😂
I just baought a new one, not working.. not sure if issue with flute or I dont know something
Thank you for sharing because of your awesome video I will be purchasing this flute I wanted to ask how do you clean this Pacific flute on the outside with its material so it will not rust or anything like that
A clean microfiber cloth is best for cleaning the outside. I list a good one in this video: ruclips.net/video/nvN4SjEKNFU/видео.html
Can you make a review also of Muslady metal flute? Thanks.
I wish I could review every flute on the internet. However...💸💸 Thanks for watching!
I’ll keep the cork greased for Amazon Piccolo since they’re not included I don’t know why.
That's strange! Did you get the all metal piccolo from Amazon or the one that is plastic and metal?
@@LanceSuzuki ABS body with metal head join
Thanx for the validation on my Glory flute purchase! I played for some small audiences ....they liked the sound! Plus I did practice diligently!Only one question...I can hit the high C. I can play low D flat ..but I can't seem to play low C....any suggestions? Any adjustments needed?
Hi Curt,
It's hard to say without seeing the flute. Good luck!
Lance
Thanx Lance!
This is making me want to play the flute 😍
👍👍
Very helpful love your music
16:36 is that Katie flute intro
The gloves are for band in high school I have to use them when I preformed for high school band
Is it harder to play with the gloves on?
Lance Suzuki yes it really slippery and it makes me feel like I’m going to drop my flute. But my director used to let us cut the tops off so we wouldn’t drop it.
@@katiethompson1406 wow that's kinda terrifying lol
He starts playing at 13:46
Now I wanna know would you or have you tried the open hole flute from the same brand. Right now I wanna try to play again. My old flute was a germeinhardt b foot. It was stolen from me when I was 19. I wanna try to get a b foot open hole flute.
good demo.
I like your painting
Thanks!
