The Austrian StG.58 FAL is an iconic rifle from the Cold War. The FAL became known as the "right arm of freedom" because 90 nations adopted it in some form or fashion during the Cold War. The StG58 is a rather unique version of the tested FN FAL rifle.

The dsa stg 58 was my favorite rifle it had an original styer barrel
Best battle rifle ever built
STG58 was my first FAL. It is still my favorite.
same here 🍻
Definitely would like to see your collection of FALs. All of em! Happy Patreon Supporter, Let me know where to switch to if they kick you off.
Im a FAL fanboi and i love the MAC channel so i would love moore FAL videos😃.
Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
That rifle is GOLDEN.
FAL was my first rifle build, If you perused the FAL Files' "Gunsmithing & Build It Yourself" section, I'm Bandit that documented my first build back in 2002 from a de-milled kit you *used to" be able to pick up at a rather reasonable price. That thread documenting the build is to this day, still "Sticky'd" to the top and I still have and enjoy shooting the end result. I still have a few FAL de-milled kits in my stash of "Partz" to include an Austrian STG 58... Some day... Some day...
Rick Stevens Very cool man! Thanks for sharing the knowledge
Such an iconic gun. It's a beauty in any variation.
Are you FAL in love?))))
First rifle I bought as a high school graduation present to myself is my SA58 Para 16". The FAL really is an amazing platform, the ergos being my personal favorite part. I tend to release the mag button with my trigger finger, using my left hand to either pop the mag with another or pull the inserted one depending on how tight it is.
The FAL is a great rifle design! Thank you for that overview of one of your rifles that has, obviously, a special place in your heart!
I know that the m14 is considered a sacred rifle, but the FAL is really the superior design for military service.
The M14 really is the worst of the main NATO battle rifles. If you want to see the M14 done right, check out the Italian BM-59, it has lots of parts commonality with the M1, something the M14 was supposed to have but never did, has a good compensator to tame recoil and muzzle climb, and it was in production while the M14 was still being figured out.
I don't hate the M14, but as an infantry rifle it's kind of embarrassing.
The M14 was only considered a sacred rifle to the people that made it and those that thought rifles should be made of 100% steel and extremely heavy and unfit to be wielded by small frame people. It lasted a mere SIX YEARS on our infantry roster!!
Google: "The M14 Is Surely the Worst Rifle the U.S. Military History"
You will be overwhelmed at the sheer number of articles and videos unilaterally stating this. So, NO, the M14 is NOT considered a "sacred rifle".
The FAL is my favorite type of rifle. As for the FALFiles I was on there when it was a blue background message board before Jenn modified it. I still pop by periodically. Please do more FAL reviews.
YES TIM, MORE FALS!!! My all time fav battle rifle.
Love my DSArms SA58.
AKMASTERMIND Yes indeed. Since Tim did this STG58 presentation he needs to follow up, at minimum, with a video on an early (and historic) G1 / BGS, and a Belgian PARA model. 👍
I recently got an STG58 on an Imbel receiver on a trade and I love it. Great video
I still have the same Austrian kit built by DSArms. (My 18th birthday gift) but now has a Magpul PRS2 Stock and the Picatinny rail dust cover. Still loving it.
I would very much enjoy seeing more FAL rifles on the channel. Fine work sir.
Stg58 is my FAL.
(I can't sell it legally in Finland anymore because it was converted from a full auto gun. Except to a collector. The law changed this summer. Not that I would want to depart from it, it's awesome)
The built-in bipod is attached to the barrel. The gun shoots much higher on bipod support compared to magazine- or hand supported.
It's accurate at least to 300 meters using the excellent standard iron sights.
is this gun law an EU directive ? do people support more gun bans ? here in the uk its total joke ! yet we are supposed to a have a right to arms for defence in our consitution
@@geezerp1982 totally agree with you. I'm in the UK too and it's pathetic how brainwashed about guns the average person is. If only we had a little freedom, guns would be my number one hobby. When all this bullshit is over I'm going to try and get a shotgun certificate. I don't think I'd stand much of a chance with a FAC. All our localish gun clubs closed down years ago anyway. It's a disgrace that anything over 12ftlbs in an air rifle is classed as a firearm too.
Great Video! I love the FAL and the STG-58 is one of my favorite ones as well ever since I got to shoot a buddy's rifle. A buddy of mine was able to buy a Century Arms STG-58 that was built on a IMBEL receiver with Austrian parts kit the only catch was that they cut off the Flash hider since the rifle was build in 1997-98. He found the ad on Shotgun News and ordered it I found out the next day and when I called less than 24 hours later the rifles were gone. I was actually very impressed by how well build the rifle was and other the fact that it looked like they took a pipe cutter to cut off the Flash hider everything else was Great. My buddy has the barrel target crown and clean up but the rifle shoot Clean and True out too 300 yards without issues. We used to Shoot Watermelons at another friends property at 300 yards and the STG made the Melons Blow UP into Red Mist.
My favorite variant. Well done Tim!
Back around 2004, I built an Austrian STG58 from surplus military parts I picked up at gun shows, and ordered a new upper receiver from DSA to complete the build. There's only two guns I have remorse about selling and that was one of them.
I smell a gauntlet test between the fal and scar coming up soon 😈
Awesome man. I love the FAL, just make this the FAL channel for all I care! Really enjoyed the video.
My first 308 was/is a FAL. Easily my favorite rifle aesthetically speaking. Many varients to collect too which just adds to the enjoyment.
Me too. my First FAL variant is a DSA heavy barrel version.
Have an Enterprise STG-58 made in the late 90's
It is the lower serial number production so good quality
Solid as a rock
I was a young, broke Lance Corporal when the Bush's 89 gun ban hit. I already had an HK91 with all the bells and whistles, and I was saving for the newly released Springfield Armory paratrooper FAL. Bush ended that. I was blindsided by that old sanctimonious pos. Up until that point, it was an awesome world, where AK's were $300, and Springfield armory was lowering the price point on some cool stuff. Of course, the Colt ar15 was still expensive and pretty much the only game in town. Needless to say, I voted Perot after that.
I graduated high school that year and was saving up money looking forward to buying an FAL and a G3, my two favorite rifles at the time. Bush took that dream away from me. I voted for Perot as well. ;)
I hope no Bush or Clinton wins in USA election ever again.
Bought some Chinese MAK-90's in the early 90's $125 each
Didn't know a thing about them, just thought they looked cool
Worth quite a bit more now
well think of us poor brits who had to deal with thatchers 1988 self loading centre fire rifle ban ! no grandfather rights hand them in or the police would of busting down your door and you become a felon ! good old days when we also had bust fire weapons legally ! however after 88 we could FALS again but only in straight pull
@ geezerp1982 So until that point in 1988 Brits could still buy normal semiauto FN FALs and HK91s and AKs and so on?
When I joined up my first rifle was a 762 SLR fnla1 and it saved my life and was a valuable frend that I respected exceptional wepon miss it
Yes!!! That’s one of my babies. I bought one back in 2009 and still have it. I cringed at the price a bit at the time. But I knew it’d be around only for a limited time. Cool to learn mine is a LMT receiver.
For the love of god, keep the FAL videos coming!!
Love anything FAL and really enjoyed this Video!
I remember when the DSA Stg 58's were on the Market. Unfortunately, I was out of work at the time and couldn't justify buying one.
Fortunately, I still have my L1A1 FAL Sporter, built on a Canadian Parts kit and Imbel receiver. Love it!
Best FAL ever in my opinion.. I have an original one (converted into SA) with matching low SN made in 59.. love it!
Does it have an original fn Steyr receiver?
Beautiful FAL Tim! I hope to add one to my collection someday. They really are great rifles. Thanks for sharing this one with us.
Carried an FN FAL back in the 80's. Best battle rifle ever.
Me too...heavy after some miles walking in sand and dirt.
ar-10 wants a word with you
Very Cool Austrian FN-FAL, Tim !!!!!!!!!! Thanks for showing it Sir
Yes please, may we have some more!!! Got my first FAL and fired it for the first time yesterday!! I agree, we should have adopted the FAL instead.
Great FAL video and the information was great. This is one of my favorite FALs and one day maybe I will have one.
Thank you for doing this episode! I have been a FN FAL lover for over 20 years now. I've built many and have a decent collection.
Anytime I can get to read any new material on that weapons system or watch a video on them, I'm all over it!
Thank you again for the video!
Thank You so much for this video. I love the FAL. She was always my dream gun when I was just a little fella. To this day I still think she's the best looking gal at the dance. Love The FAL. Again thank you for this awesome video Brother 👍🏻 feel free to do some more :) Thumb's up Tim!~John
Skinny Medic is starting to make subscription boxes. Pretty excited about that. Great work, guys
I used to have an STG-58 built up by DS Arms way-way back in the mid 90's. I ordered the parts kit (complete with that sweet hammer forged barrel) from Shotgun News for about $150 along with an Imbel type 3 receiver. Those were the AWB days, so I couldn't attach the original STG flash hider, (had to go with the DS Arms muzzle break that they brazed on). I also had to 922r the rifle using the required number of US made parts, (again the parts were supplied by DS Arms). The finished product, though, was nothing less than outstanding. DS Arms did a great job assembling the kit. The barrel was timed perfectly and head spaced with their locking block. It was really a top grade rifle. I got rid of it not too long after the Sundown because in my mind it became a neutered Clinton-era rifle which made it unacceptable, (a notion that I came to realize was very foolish on my part). I do miss that old gun.
Thank you for the excellent review. Outstanding job as always.
I placed a velcro sticky back one inch on the spot where the extracted brass hits the right side of the FN's receiver, works fine. You can trim these to fit very eye pleasing.
More fal videos please thanks mac love ya brother
I have an Australian "inch" 58 with the original wood furniture. The clips and other parts are not interchangeable. I have fired it on occasion and it has never missed once. The one issue with the gun is you have to remove the gas rod and clean the tube as over time it will cause failure to load. I also have the Metric gun and it works just fine.
I have an early version of the STG with wood stock and grenade sights… god I love it
I have the FAL L1A1 with the L2A2 SUIT scope on it, definitely my favorite rifle in my collection, if you have that combo could you review it also, keep up all the great work!
I bought a DSA SA58 four years ago and owned it for three years. There was one DSA mag it functioned properly with, but the others were hit and miss and the magazine well wasn't even deep enough to fully seat the surplus FAL mags. I planned on sending it to Arizona Response Systems to correct the machine work, but I ended up selling it. Right now I'm buying a SCAR 17S, but I'm also going to buy an FAL parts kit sometime and send the receiver to ARS for machining and installation of the barrel. DSA definitely has horrible quality control, I'll never buy another SA58 in my life.
G-day Mate, I did my basic training with L1A1 SLR, 7.62 NATO, still to this day I have a love hate relationship with them, just have to make sure you have that gas block dialed in correctly or you'll have a bruised cheek like you've gone a couple of rounds with heavy-weight boxer, especially if you have spent the day on the range with it. Cheers for the video.
I love my StG58.
I love my StG58. It has an original Steyr barrel. I think its dated 1961 but I'd have to take my hand guards back off to check. I kept my metal hand guards of course but have put a polymer set on for shooting as the metal guards got very hot really quick.
Fantastic video and information. In the 90's, had a HK 91 was cool. Now I have M1 garand and JRA Bm- 59. Sometime ago you said you would do range and review of BM-59. I would bet my life on both if SHTF. Please do video on the BM-59. Also have 16" And 24" Ar15. My children are good to go. To protect OUR HOMELAND! "GIVE ME FREEDOM OR DEATH" From our father's. Never forget America's are absolutely all nations of the world. Sorry I worry, old dad smyrna Tennessee. Thank you SIR🎗🎗👊😎😎
Definitely would love to see more rifle videos
Had one, traded it for a NIB Colt 6940 and a bunch of ammo and mags. Fun gun.
I have that exact setup minus the Full option. DS received and original
STG-58 numbers matching kit... tack driver !!
About 20 years ago I shot a friends FN FAL at the one and only time I shot NRA high power. I loved it. Couldn't afford one then. Wish I could find a cheap one now!
Great video. The STG58 and Israeli versions are my favorite FALs. I would also take the FAL above the FN Scar
That was my service rifle. Heavy piece of s... to carry, but i loved it
I strongly agree with you.. and I prefer the FAL over the SCAR
Loving the new range and slightly new look video.
I do appreciate the simplistic but robust nature of my STG 58. So much easier to work on than my M1A. I do shoot mine suppressed from time to time with a modified gas plug, and a YHM QD flash hider :D
Damn I love the "thwak" when .308 from a FAL hits hits steel at 100yds. I swear it sound better/different than from anything else (ie AR-10). My ARS L1A1 will the last gun I sell.
my rifle, finally in MACs spotlight!
Man, we were stupid to pick the M14 over the FAL...
Be carefull there mate. The M14 and Springfield M1A have religious status among many a patriot.
Carl Sasau just because they weren’t introduced to the t48.
Not stupidity, but a combination of corrupt testing, insular rejection of anything not made in system and massive egos within the ordnance board that kept the FAL from ever having a chance to be adopted. May not have liked McNamara but the best thing he ever did was disband the ordnance corps after their mishandling of the M16's adoption.
🎼I don't want no teenage queen🎵 I just need my M14🎶
B I G I R O N
Hey
That bipod is such a good idea for a battle rifle like the FAL, considering that full auto on an FAL is only useful is you have one
In Range did a thing with novice shooters to both platforms ( and others) and the FAL outshone the SCAR.
Carried the British l1a1 for yrs love FAL
Really love this type of vids keep it up!
Hi Being a Brit with some friends who fought in the Falklands, with the L1A1, and said they truly hated having to transition to the ‘wonderful’ SA80 and would have preferred using the Argentina para FAL instead, I wondered do you have an L1A1 and where would you rank it in the FAL linage? I saw bloke on the range praising the L1A1, but maybe he’s a bit biased, just joking ;). Great channel and videos by the way
go get a FAC and get a L1A1 made to straight pull ! they cost 3k
Our saying in the Austrian Armed Forces was always that the STG 58 is a slightly rusting cutting and sticking weapon that can also be used for shooting if necessary. We had to disassemble, clean and reassemble the weapon in complete darkness. But the STG 58 is a reliable and usable assault rifle. It is still used by the Guard today because the Steyr STG77 is not suitable for drills.
FN guns are my favorite, I love Merica but can't help but feel we don't compete to the quality of FN. FAL is definitely my favorite COD gun too.
Argentine gear logo. These rifles are beasts, and hit hard. South of Texas you find tons of them.
Good video I just finished my review of the the DSA SA58 on RUclips (woodline tracking) Yes I would take a Fal over a Scar. Yes Do more videos on the FAL. Keep up the good videos.
Would love to see you testing the Imbel ia2 in 7.62x51 and 5.56x45. de 762 is a fall modernized by the Brazilian military, and the 556 has the controls of the fal but has the mechanics of the ar15
Have a German G1 myself. Love these guns. Just wish mags would be more common still.
Yes do more videos on the fal
Don't have target fall over with 5.56 at 250 yds ....;-)
Also, like my FAL vs the HK91 I had owned before. Ergonomics are much better for me.
Having been issued both the SLR if your British or FAL every were else, and the SA/80 in my case the LSW I can honestly say the SLR was the best rifle I have ever used, reliable and with the stopping power of the 7.62 was a real comfort. You should remove and clean the gas plug and operating rod assembly during normal cleaning as build up of carbon can cause malfunctions.
Great video, I wish my 58 build was as cheap as yours.
I only Saw this kind of bipod on FAP ("fuzil automático pesado" or "heavy atomatic rifle")
May i add that the austrian army still has some STG 58 for "presentation duty"... (When i started my conscript service 20 years and one day ago the STG 58 was still included in the manuals that we all got for how to field strip ect.)
I would love to see a walk through of your whole firearm collection
My dad had this weapon during his time at the austrian military.
This is unrelated. But I recently read that the polish MSBS rifle is coming to the Civilian market. Can’t wait to see if it shows up here.
These are strong weapons, the Brit ones are anyway, as they are more reliable as they have sand cuts on the bolt carrier and practically indestructible, if your magazines are good and you maintain it properly you wont see many stoppages, the Brit L1A1 version was affectionately known as 'Gods Own Rifle' in my unit back in the day. btw turning the gas plug upside down turns off the gas so the action doesnt cycle. - we always removed the gas plug piston and spring out for daily cleaning, btw the rod at the back of the carrier was known as the 'Rats Tail'
Unbelievable they left the grip angle at that heinous wrist breaking orientation. I have 36" arms. I LOVE the AR15 platform for the many shallow angle grips available(17 degrees or less) . My fave is the BCM® Grip Mod 3 - Black
BCM
MSRP: $20.00
Your Price: $17.95
I HAVE TWO, BY FAR TWO OF MY MOST ACCURATE FAL RIFLES IN MY COLLECTION, SECOND TO THEM IS MY L1A1 BRITISH WITH RADWAY GREEN AMMO. THE STG STEYR HAMMER FORGED BARRELS ARE THE BEST.
Love this gun at my military time in Austria... It was very nervy to clean... But it's a man power weapon... You got the kick... 😉.. The stg 77 was the lady version... Nice to handle, easy to clean and shot... But... Not a "man version".. 😉 🙂. The stg 58 is a weapon who make Respekt.. 😉 Cause it's so powerful.. 😉 🙂
Wish I had a FAL. Then again, lots of things I wish I had... I do like the FAL over the SCAR as well. I already have so many calibers though it’s hard to justify yet another.
My .30 full cartridge rifle is an m1 garand dated to 1944.
Tim Underbakke How can you LEGITIMATELY say, "You like the FAL Over the SCAR"... ( When you Admittedly own Neither) ? Be HONEST. Just being Real... Take it light...
Kind of ironic, isn't it, that the "right arm of the Free World," adopted by some ninety nations, that the FAL didn't outlast its old Cold War-era rivals, the CETME/G3, M14, and the AR10 for that matter. The latter three designs are all in front-line military service to this day in multiple nations, in specialist or generalist roles, but not the FN FAL, which has pretty much been retired everywhere it once held sway. Only one major nation still issues the design to her army - Brazil - although there are rumors that Argentina plans to reissue them in some manner as well.
I have an StG58 built on Springfield Armory 4800 match receiver which also has the Imbel gear logo. I love it. I also have a HK91 and a Galil Ace 1651 rifle. All are great weapons. Thanks for the great video. By the way, I had heard some years ago that some of the surplus FAL barrels had throat erosion issues. Have you heard anything about this?
I built one around 2002 from a parts kit but I used an Imbel receiver. I need to dust it off and get out to the range probably haven't shot it in 10-12 years.
Great video. Need to do one in the Hebrew hammer FAL.
Loved the shirt
I’m assuming you have a large gun collection. Now that you are older how do you view collecting? Also in years to come how will you want to distribute your firearms? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts. Thanks for 11 years of information and entertainment. I hope the journey has been a good one.
I have been collecting for 30 years. I hope that my children continue their interest in firearms and will be good stewards of my lifes work. If not, upon my death my business partner and/or close friends will help my wife liquidate my collection. I hate to think of that happening, but I'll be dead... it won't matter much to me then. 😀 It has been a fun and quite interesting journey. I hope to continue it for another decade or more if possible. We'll see how things shake out. Thank you for watching.
I literally had that same exact rifle several years ago made by DSARMS and sold it having never fired it. What a dumb decision that was. 🤦♂️ I wish DSARMS would make these models again.
I have a Century G1SA SPORTER metric pattern .308 rifle with Israeli barrel and gas system (based on the measurements). for handloaded ammo I have to run the gas port REALLY low, like 1.5 to 2 on the gas settings. basically anything that isn't military ball ammo I have to run it nearly closed.
I’ve always wanted an FNC
FAL vs SCAR 17 video is now needed
Tim, I'm curious, do you have any Brazilian FAL? those were actually well made by IMBEL. I served in the BR. Army and they rocked, heavy as hell, all wood and steel, but never failed...
@@justinbandy2610 It's not odd at all . Lots of metric IMBEL receivers were imported when STG-58 parts kits were being sold . It was a very logical combination . I also have an STG-58 with IMBEL . I had it built by ARS , Cadillac of a rifle .
Ive been wanting one of these so badly
