  • The Monster Hunter series saw great success in Japan, but over the past ten years it's struggled to catch on in Western Markets. That changed with the release of Monster Hunter World, Capcom's bestselling game of all time, with 70% of all sales coming from outside Japan.
    How did the series change it's luck and break through to become mainstream in more than just its home country? This video seeks to explore and answer that question.

    I’m so excited for “monster hunter 6 / world 2” whatever that ends up being. As a western player who’s been a fan since the first game World was what I had been hoping for prior to 2018. I prefer playing on devoted home consoles and World just tied together so many things I wished they’d do with the series for so long. Now that the series has gained a major following I can’t wait to see what’s released as a successor to World. Hopefully with alphabetically organized decoration lists lol

      @@ryanst-georges4633 there are 2 teams that make MH games, the ‘A’ team and ‘B’ team. A team makes the console titles and B team makes the titles on portable consoles. Rise was made by the B team, while World was made by A team, the same way that MHGU was made by B team after A team made MH4U. Rise isn’t MH6 because it’s in the same generation of games as World and the console releases usually start a new generation of games.

    I'm so happy with how far the series has come. The game was definitely an underrated gem back then. I remember freedom unite was so hard, it never tell you how to climb the cliff in the snowy mountain map. I dropped the game, one year later i picked it up again, figured out how to climb the cliff by pressing circle, got hooked, and everything is history.

I’ve convinced many friends to pick up the game and play with me during this last year of Covid and it’s connected all of us when we were all so far away. Even though I might not get a chance to play Rise, I can say that playing MHW is one of my favorite games perhaps of all time.

    I remember my first interaction with the monster hunter games came with monster hunter 2 which i bought from a flee market and the game was completely in japanese. I couldn't understand a thing in the game but somehow through trial and error i learned what all the icons meant and what the quests were telling me to do (though the usual fetch and egg-hunt quests took a bit more trial and error). Years later i've followed the series through the psp, 3ds and wii era playing most if not all of the major releases and becoming a massive Capcom fan through their other series to boot. Seeing the series and Capcom becoming such a massive name in the industry feels like a life long dream coming true for both Capcom and us their fans. I'll probably never stop playing Monster Hunter until i'm a grandpa and i can't wait to tell kids there used to be like 4-5 moves for each weapon.

    MHW is the first MH game I ever played, but what hooked me in on the series was MH 3, Tri, or whatever it was called. I loved monsters, and ocean stuff, (still do), and seeing the trailer one day made my little child's eyes bulge at such excitement and awe. though sadly I would never find one at a local retailer, I was happy watching videos of others and seeing how awesome it was. (Though the water controls definitely needed improvement.)
    I'm glad that MHW was my first though, as I probably wouldn't have been able to get used to the slow movement of the older gens. (Not saying they were bad, don't kill me for my opinion pls.)
    My ultimate Monster Hunter dream is that one day they'll bring back underwater fights, with a better, and modern take on the underwater mechanics, like giving you aqua jets to swim faster and more smoothly, and air capsules to take so you don't always have to go up for air. With this, they could bring back monsters like lagiacrus, man I miss seeing that reptile snake on screen.
    This would be my dream come true for a new Monster Hunter Game.

    And from a ancient medieval creature artist such as myself I'd say it has really made me cringed watching monsters go toe to toe with each other and battling them all at once. And if I've never got a single shred out of playing it, I wouldn't think about playing any other game.

    and Rise sold 11.7 million and sunbreak sold 5 million
    that makes the total of the 5th gen ONLY 48.3 million+
    and if u count the master edition as 2 sales then it sold 51.3 MILLION or even more
    that makes MH easily the biggest current capcom IP for the last 10 years
    MH has 55 releases with a total of 90+ million (most of it from 5th gen only which is INSANE)

    World is the only MH game I’ve played and I really like it, there are just two problems I have. The first is that I really wish the monsters had health bars, at least so I can feel the damage numbers shown can mean something and because a lot of the later monsters feel like damage sponges, but hey that’s a minor thing. Unlike my second problem, that being the fact that you can’t actually PAUSE the game even when you’re playing solo or in offline mode.

    • @biggnesss7192
      @biggnesss7192 Год назад

      Sorry but I don't like the idea of health bars. It's a HUNTING game not a fighting game your meant to be able to tell how far the monster is from dieing through its behaviour. E.g is it limping/ constantly fleeing? Is it becoming more exhausted more often? Are most of its parts broken? These signs serve as indications of how close you are to ending the hunt. And regarding the pause thing I totally agree.

    • @tylerleach8796
      @tylerleach8796 Год назад

      @@biggnesss7192 Then I really wish there were more signs of your damage mattering. Espeically for Master Rank monsters that ARE just huge damage sponges. I just don't see the point of showing damage numbers when you have no reference of what those numbers are subtracting from.
      At the very least, I feel them having health bars should be an option you can turn on and off to please both people that want them and don't want them.

    • @emblemblade9245
      @emblemblade9245 Год назад

      Kinda the same. I loved freedom 2 and freedom unite, but none of the later entries clicked with me. Bought Tri and World but never bothered to finish even the story. Rise hooked me back into the franchise and I went back to World after finishing Rise.
      Still hope they put the crustacean bosses back like Shen Gaoren

    I've been buying and playin MH since it came out but i never REALLY played it until World, once i saw the hunter walk by a plant and pick it without stopping i knew they fixed everything that made the game unenjoyable! I always wanted to love MH, i loved the concept, i loved the creativity and thought that went into it but i never found it enjoyable to play. i loved the game from afar... World is not only a good MH it's just a damn good game over all... kudos to capcom, Rise is great too but you can see the age in some of the design choices and you can see one of the problems with staggered development, you cant get the most benefit of the feedback from the field because you are already halfway through your development cycle... i mean they original were going to do loading in between areas!!! That would've been the end of any momentum gained from world for sure lol

      Many people still had great multiplayer experiences in 5th Gen but I agree that the SoS system slaughtered the social aspect overall.
      That and the excess of certain RNG factors that made people want to grind stuff over and over as quickly as possible and getting really mad when other players mess it up for them. There’s not enough cooperation or discipline

    I have a love hate relationship with MH. Games like TriU, 4U and World are why i love it and games like GU and Rise is why i hate it.
    The former has immersion and the latter is just an action game void of what you call a monster hunter game.

    Eh, I still don't buy it tbh. I grew up on MHFU and I played World with a friend of mine on his PS4 for a few weeks. It feels like, in servicing the game to improve its overall performance and accessibility for the western crowd culturally as well, a lot of in-game culture was lost imo. That's why I love MHGU so much, because it nails multiplayer hunts while staying true to the original content. And I get that western audiences cream their pants over hearing about 'open world' type gameplay, but compare that to MHGU. World has prominent zones and a whole lot of nothing between them, while MHGU cuts out those wide plains or long tunnels to keep up the pace of the game, as well as develop interesting, non-repetitive set pieces for each area. I look at that first locale in World and I think there's an open area and a deeply wooded area. I look at the first locale in MHGU and I think there's an open field, an abandoned campsite, a deep, dark abyssal forest, a cave system, a babbling brook, and the corpse of Shen Gaoren. Even Rise feels way too big and unimpressive, minus the first two locales imo, those were done well.
    Tl,dr: World's upgrade made Monster Hunter a little less special and a little less focused I guess, and needlessly sacrificed a lot of what made the series so unique to me.

    • @dcshiori

      To be honest, MH World is the best of the series. I've been playing MH series since MH1 PS2. 😅

    • @emblemblade9245
      @emblemblade9245 Год назад

      World set a decent foundation but it also feels like an awkward transition that tries to keep too much of the old material without actually knowing how to adapt it into the new gameplay, if that makes any sense. The next entry needs to either re-examine just what made the feeling of the old games work and find a better way to recreate that, or go totally in the other direction and commit to something totally new.
      While Rise loses a few beloved things from the old games, it feels like it’s more comfortable with its identity in just going balls to the wall with its new ideas and not pretending it has to look too much like the past. It’s like a spin-off in a way, though I don’t mean so in a “I don’t think this is a monster hunter game” way
