It's based on US chart performance. Although Thriller did great on the charts, a lot of his other work didn't do as well (mainly Off The Wall and Bad are his other works that did really well). Also The Jacksons/Jackson 5 don't count towards his stats.
Because 6 others had more success on the US charts.

Shocked about Michael Jacksons spot and also Mariah above Madonna...never. FYI, I love them both but Madonna has been more diverse, more influential and has sold more then Mariah...interesting. I did expect MJ to be in top 5 tho.

In the US, Mariah has 68.5 million albums certified while Madonna has 64.5 million. In terms of singles, Mariah is well ahead too (All I want for Christmas is extending her lead every year). This is USA, of course worldwide Madonna is the best selling woman.

Every week has 100 single slots and 200 album slots. The same system for 60 years. #1 slot has the most points, #2 slot the second most, etc... Now they calculate all the points an artist has accumulated over the years/decades and rank them. The Beatles have collected the most, Rolling Stones second most, etc...

The list was last updated in 2019 I think, so Ari and Abel should be on it next time they update. Abel is around 85 and Ari is around 110 according to current estimates.
The main thing that was holding Ari back is that her albums didn't do that well on the charts. Although most of them debuted at #1, it was usually only at #1 for one week and they didn't spend 3+ years on the charts like some artists' albums have. She's still pretty early in her career though with a lot of albums and songs still charting, and she'll continue to get more hits, so she'll still increase on the all-time chart.
@@Lochness19 I don’t think Ari will ever crack top 50 because of her albums’ lack of longevity. Albums contribute toward stuff like this so much more than singles, hence why Taylor is so high up despite her singles not having that much longevity except in 1989 and a few in Fearless.
She’ll be higher on the Hot 100 all time list though, her singles do really well.
The Bee Gees should be higher. No one other than Paul McCartney has written more Billboard #1’s than Barry Gibb
