In the tone of Bo Burnham before Turning 30 "yayyyyyy."
I got a copyright claim today. Four days after I posted this video. Why do they have to do me like that? I am just trying to promote a feminist giraffe! 0:28 - 0:54 has to be muted now. I hope it's not too annoying!

It could also look like a line that starts at “poetic and romantic” and goes to “blunt and personal” and I think that’s where bo and hozier would be. By high school it was like engrained in me to be embarrassed about showing that I like cats like I wouldn't get those folders or notebooks that had kittens on them even though I thought they were cute because I was just sick of being made fun of like that. All of the “Eighth Grade” era interviews where he takes questions from the audience (usually college kids) are a balm to my soul. He really does listen to them and he gives such thoughtful, insightful answers to their questions. That clip (red sweater) is from the “92Y” interview, the entire thing is wonderful. Another one where he talks to college kids is “DePaul Visiting Artist” or something like that. If you look both of those up on RUclips, I’m certain you’ll be even more impressed by his intellect and empathy by the end of it! I can see from these interviews, and how he interacts with Elsie, that he has a real understanding of and connection to young people that I think is rare. He treats them respectfully like the humans they are, not like they’re just dumb kids.

the thing about ryan in PYW is that we are supposed to like him and he’s supposed to be cute and attractive, because even people that are funny and adorable and have good qualities can be rape apologists or support bad people etc etc. all the red flags aren’t meant to be noticed initially because that’s what happens when you fall in love, you ignore all the bad parts. basically i’m saying that you are valid because i would fucking love ryan if that past stuff about him didn’t exist, even the red flags can be seen as just banter or his personality if it wasn’t attached to such grotesque behavior.

the thing about Ryan's character that makes him so attractive is that its practically bo playing himself but a bit flirty with an added but of shittyness to it. like his awkwardness and shit is really similar to how he presents himself in interviews and in videos of him meeting fans. we can think bad people are attractive. plus, thats kinda the point of Ryan's character in the first place. it was to show that when we fall in love we ignore red flags and that even the nicest seeming people can be awful.

Also, just because someone is not a positive factor in your life doesn't mean that they can't have decent moments that you find 'attractive' (literal or non-literal). Not that we should ignore the bad moments because of that, but it's still fair- especially for fictional characters- to say "Look at this moment. They're so attractive right here" as long as we keep it in perspective of the full picture.
If we pretend like negative people in our life can't have 'attractive' moments, we're just going to end up gaslighting ourselves later down the road with thoughts like "well, last Thursday was a good day together, so even though they're abusive and manipulative 90% of the time, they do have decent moments.... so they can't be a bad person, right?"

Through the movie multiple people also discuss how lovely Al is even though we all know he isn’t. Going to hell but I would have snatched Ryan up the second he drank the spit coffee. God Bo is so awkward and flirty as Ryan - he has like major sub energy and I like it, what can I say. Emerald absolutely made a top tier casting choice there. ETA obviously by the end there I think we can all agree Ryan is a piece of shit that we would never go near if our lives depended on it but he’s written so well that it’s easy to overlook or discount the early red flags as male behavior conditioned by society to feel normal or acceptable to us all. I’d absolutely kick Ryan into a ditch, but that bicycle line is so fucking adorable, as is so much of the other good stuff Ryan does.
Also in another video from the if I were you podcast (the ‘bro job’ one if anyone wants to look it up) he talks about a lot of stuff that just makes me want to hold him up to other men as an example of what they should learn. The open mindedness is so fucking attractive. The fact that he discusses the double standard of men finding two women having sex arousing and that they will encourage that no matter the sexual orientation of the women involved, but two consenting non heterosexual men having sex? To men that’s awkward and shameful. For him to say that of course that’s rooted in misogyny like … please. I would die for this man why is this not widely realized hello?
And I know also we’re objectifying him and that feels bad but he is an attractive human being inside and out.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t watch sexting several times. 🤷🏻‍♀️

"Problematic" is such a fascinating song to me. He's working out throughout the song, obviously a visual metaphor for working on himself by acknowledging when he's been problematic. But there are all of these very sexual overtones, and the shot of Bo crucifying himself against the wall with that almost orgasmic expression... I feel like it's all a critique of how we use apologizing for problematic behavior in our past, no matter how minor the offense, and flog ourselves over it so that people like us.
