    @Brian Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I've been shopping for a 16' Northwest-style boat for the last couple years. There used to be more choices but some manufacturers dropped their 16' versions. We are empty nesters now so wanted to switch from our previous 18' boats to 16'. Like you, I ended up choosing the Hewescraft Sportsman 160. I ordered in the Fall of 2021 for spring 2022 delivery. This will be our first new boat. Between our boat size needs changing and the demand for used boats, we sold our 2007 Lund Sport Angler 1800 (also a cockpit-forward design) and spent the 2021 fishing season without a boat which really makes us look forward to our Hewescraft coming in the spring.
    I wish youtube gave your video a "view" credit for repeat watches as I've watched your video at least 10 times straight through and watched the middle, walk-around portion at least 30 times over the last 5 months. Ha. Each time I want to think through our incoming boat or rig it in my mind, I take the 10 or 12 minutes and watch the middle chunk. We are similar minded in rigging. I already ordered Cisco tracks, etc. I went with a Yamaha F90 for the outboard. I wanted to do a Yamaha F70 to save 100lbs, but they don't make it in a 25" shaft. I ordered the optional 25" transom on our Sportsman which required I go with the F90 because that is the lowest hp motor Yamaha offers in a 25" shaft. Even the F75, which is the same block/chassis as the F90, isn't offered in 25" shaft. We also did the "Windshield: Short Window Wing" option to make it easier to fish (bottom bounce/jig) from the front seats. The boat loses that classic northwest style look but will make it more functional for certain "from the front seat" fishing situations.
    The base price for the 2022 boat, motor and trailers have gone up a fair bit from the price you mentioned. No surprise there. And the options are very pricey as well, but we added quite a few options as this will likely be the last boat we ever buy. We even ordered some options that I don't think we'll use, but if we ever did want them, it would be more expensive or more intrusive to add later, so just speced them now. One example being the watersports pylon.
    How about another video in the spring with any updates after some time using it? Did you get your kicker installed? Other things you've added since buying or things you'd change if you ordered today? I agreed with your comment on the top and luckily we had ordered ours with the deluxe top.
    Thanks again for the video.

      I'm glad the video has been helpful for you, hope your boat shows up on time and you can get back out on the water. Did you go with the high transom for back trolling on rivers?
      I haven't actually changed anything since this video other than putting on the kicker. I went with the matching 5hp Honda and hooked it up to the fuel line Hewescraft installed. Quick, simple and works great. You can see it installed in my video of the struggle to net a fish like a moron.
      I'd still like a single bench seat for extra storage and the deluxe top for head room, other than that I'm pretty satisfied with the boat and the setup I've got with it.

    • @MrChadx1
      @MrChadx1 2 года назад

      @@brian8793 I still have to figure out storage. We ordered the bellows suspension for the front seats and so our under seat boxes are shorter and accessed from an opening in the side rather than from the top by flipping the seat forward. Our last boat had one side bench with storage, but we usually had more than two of us so needed the seating; now we won't. I'm thinking that I might build or source some type of storage where the side bench would go, but taller for more storage and with a surface where I can set things like tackle box since we don't need the seat surface.
      I went with the high transom simply because we fish big water (20 mile long reservoir and an even bigger lake) and winds and waves can blow up in a hurry and an extra 5" on the transom is just a little extra insurance.
      Our last boat did have slightly more storage, but I found I filled it up with things I really didn't need with in a given trip. I'll be better organized with the new boat and only bring the gear needed for the type of fishing/trip we are doing. That will lighten the load as well. I will mount my planer board mast on the bow like on the last boat.
      On the previous boat, I had a 9.8hp kicker and also a 24v bow mount. The last year we had that, I switched to lithium batteries and found I could troll with the bow mount and often didn't use the kicker. Only if I wanted to troll over 3.5mph did I turn on the kicker and then let it push us to 3mph and then used the bow mount for the extra speed and for steering. I have thought about going with no kicker in the next boat since the lithium give me several days of high speed trolling and I figure if the waves are too big to troll with the bow mount, I'll troll with the main outboard. I still like the idea of a kicker for emergencies, though, and spreading the load when trolling at high speed so have also been looking at an electric kicker. Either a transom mount Minnkota to tie into my existing 24v battery bank or a stand alone electric outboard like those from ePropulsion or Torqeedo since those are brushless unlike the typical Minnkota electric trolling motors. But really, the bow mount and Yamaha F90 will likely do everything I need.
      Most of our fishing is trolling (trout and walleye) which is rods in the back of the boat in rod holders and/or lines out to the big planer board lines running on the planer board mast. Other primary type is bottom bouncing (walleye) which is why, as mentioned, we got the short window wing option so we an sit in the front seats and still fish over the gunwale where the standard windshield wing blocked that.
      So feel like we pretty much have it figured out except for the storage that I'll put where the side bench normally sits. Did Hewescraft ever catch up enough that they would sell you the side bench or still waiting?

      @@johnnydo6410 After my year experience with the Sportsman 160, definitely go with the 90. I usually never want or need max rated power on a boat, but for these, I'm so glad I went with a 90hp. A 60hp would be quite adequate, but the 90 will bring more satisfaction long term.

  • @jimquantic

    People get "sticker shock" when they first hear how much these cost, BUT if you have not been on one, trust me on this, you have no idea how heavy built they are. In the Pacific Northwest years ago, I was invited aboard a 20 foot model at a dock. You know how it is, you stip into ANY boat and they rock hard port or starboard? Not this one, it felt like stepping from the dock onto a concrete slab--and I'm not kidding. It was one of those "oh my" moments. If my eyes had been closed, I would have never understood it was aluminum. I do not know--but assume it is a GREAT boat to buy....used. I can't imagine it wearing out over many years.

    Thanks for your review. Just purchased a Sportsman 180 and need to add down riggers, plug-ins, and a trolling setup. Will be fishing for Kokanee and Columbia River Salmon. What is your recommendation for a down rigger model? My boat has factory mount, so I don't need a track for the DRs. Also interested is doing a bow seat of some kind.

    • @brian8793
      @brian8793  Год назад +1

      Unfortunately I’m no help with downriggers, sorry. I’ve used a few different models on friend’s boats but never looked into much as far as getting my own. The bow seat would be fairly simple if you used the style that has a deck mounted socket to set the base into. You have to be a bit of a contortionist but you can reach the underside of the deck to secure the hardware.

For my boat, I prefer the grey color of the standard Yamaha F90 anyway, but the extra 10% hp would have been nice. And, I could have probably swapped the engine cover with someone with a standard F90 that preferred the black/red color of the 90SHO engine cover. Then I'd be running a SHO stealth. Ha.

      It should. With the tongue folded and the motor down mine measures right about 20' long.
