- Join me in this video where I will demonstrate How to Repurpose and Reuse 3 Different Types of Pastel Papers.
Often beginner artists get a little nervous when working on sanded papers for the first time because they can get quite expensive. You may find yourself thinking, "Oh no! If I make a mistake I've wasted my money!" But all is not lost since many pastel papers can be restored and you can begin a new painting if you like.
In this demonstration I will be restoring 3 different brands of sanded pastel papers.... UArt Sanded Paper, Pastelmat, and Sennelier LaCarte Pastel Card. Find links to these products below.
I will also be providing separate tutorials where I will create a new painting on each of these surfaces, so be sure to subscribe and hit the bell icon to be. notified of upcoming video lessons. Happy Painting!

You are a treasure😚. So much good advice!👍💝
Wow! YES! This was so helpful. Thank you.
It's like you read my mind Susan...LOL! I recently painted on pastelmat and just hated the entire thing. The more I went along the worse it got. I thought "hmmm wonder if I can just stick this monstrosity in the kitchen sink and at least salvage the paper"? Well low and behold here you are.....😍
Wonderful! I'm so happy that this was helpful and perhaps took away some of the fear of submerging it in the kitchen sink... lol! :)
Great tip, thanks. Didn't know you could do this.
Really helpful
Thanks for showing this. I've heard that I can wash off pastels from my pastelmat but was also scared to try it but now I see it's pretty easy to do!
Great to know! I always wondered how people do it, now I know. Thank you!❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
Amazing! This is why you buy quality paper! 🙏
Great video Susan. I really appreciate how you share things like this that are so helpful to know!
Thank you so much for posting this! The timing was perfect - I started a pastel painting just last week and the client changed their mind. I had been hoping I could reuse the not-cheap Uart pastel card. I'm amazed! Thank you, and I love your videos! 😁
Yay! so glad it was helpful Jamie!
So good to see you today!
Thanks for watching !! :)
Do you think the same technique would work for uArt 600? It's finer grit so I'm wondering if the wet and scrub technique damages or clogs the texture?
I have thought about washing the paper off in the past, but never had the guts to try it! 🤣 I didn't keep my 'failed' paintings 🤦♀️
Do you have a preference between UArt and Pastelmat? I found my UArt 600 clogging up in odd, chunky spots on a portrait background about year ago. I haven't given it another chance since then. 😬 I kind of want to try it again, since it seems to cost less, but I've been gun shy. 😅
Cheers, and thank you for another great video. I hope you were able to have a happy birthday 🎂 💓
I think you could repurpose UArt 600 in the same way. The texture is just a bit more fine but other than that it should behave just like the 400. And gosh... that's a hard question about my preference between UArt and Pastelmat. I really like them both, but I especially like "white" pastelmat if I'm going to do a watercolor or acrylic ink underpainting. The colors show up more vibrant on the white surface than they do on the "cream-colored" UArt. Also, pastelmat doesn't have the grittiness of Uart so my brush flows more nicely when I do a wet underpainting. But they are both awesome. You may want to try UArt 400 next time... you can get a bit more layering than with the 600. Also, I've been buying Fisher 400 sanded paper lately from Pro Art Panels. It's literally just like UArt, but it doesn't curl and stays nice a flat. Hope that helps!
Funny ending 😁. I painted a lovely cat on la carte and realized later that one eye was too small. I did the same you showed here and erased a lot of pastel off and was able to paint better looking eye.
Wonderful! I love knowing I can still correct things if they're a bit off. :)
What are your thoughts on LuxArchival paper?
I really like it! I've been using it lots lately and it's an excellent sanded surface.

Does this ruin the tooth of the paper..?
That’s a great question and I actually just finished a Painting on this repurposed Uart paper and it did not seem to lose any of the tooth.
