What a beautiful painting. I think I'm loving pastels, I'm a beginner and I need a lot of help.

So beautiful! I’m new to Canson paper. It’s very good to know that it can be used with gesso- this might become my go-to combination for homemade surfaces

I have learnt not to try and put my clear gesso on so smoothly since watching two of your videos now. Thanks I love the craggyness of the surface and different directions.

Loved this video, Karen. I have some black Canson paper that I will try the clear gesso on. I've never done it with the paper taped up like you did; I put it lying flat on my counter and then painted it. I think that is why it would buckle up a little bit. I'll try it the way you did it here. Thanks for sharing with us all and God bless. Love your cute lil doggy, too, at the very end.

I've used pastel ground before on Canson. I have clear gesso so I'll have to try this. I love your painting. I love all of your paintings! Thank you for sharing.

Karen, thank you for the video. I have used clear gesso on Canson paper also. It was a large piece and I did get some buckling, maybe I used too much. But it straightened out with a few books on it in a few hours. I wound up with a great painting using one of your amazing videos!

Hi Karen, Love your work! I have some Art spectrum Color fix smoother grain pastel paper. Do you think I should sand it before using clear gesso for repurposing? Thanks again, I was apprehensive about trying pastels, but your videos have made it much less intimidating.

It depends on how rough you wan the texture. You can certainly apply the gesso without sanding. Thanks for watching and welcome to the wonderful world of pastels!

I've done this quite a few times just to paint on something when I didn't want to do sanded! I think it's ok, I never have and still don't love it! Too much of a struggle to deal with that ugly texture😱🤐😜! HI KAREN🤗

I've thrown away many paintings. What about things that I kind of like? but not thoroughly. Should I re-purpose, or should I save for some reason? As 'studies'?

Great questions. I do save some of the borderline painting thinking I would someday know how to make them better. But more often than not I don't ever do that. If you paint a lot I would save some of the borderline ones!

I tried this on fresh Mi-Tientes just now, and it's warping horribly -- pressing it flat doesn't seem to be helping. I wonder if this only works on paper that already has a layer of pastel to protect it from the moisture. I've been getting great results making my own paper with Ohuhu watercolor blocks, which are much cheaper and stay flat as they dry.

    • @jennw6809

Update: I tried a sheet with pastel, and only secured it with tape loops (the other papers I'd taped down all the way around.). It warped less although the edges did curl and one corner popped up. Maybe if I had it more secure with the tape tabs it'd have turned out better. Not sure how Karen got such a great result!

I have tried this seversl times and it buckles horribly every time. So badly that it is not remotely usable. Wonder why?

    • @KarenMargulis
      @KarenMargulis  4 года назад

I am not sure! Some one speculated it had to do with the color of the paper? I am going to do more experiments! This was white paper.

    • @brendamaas4293

@@KarenMargulis I had used the coloured paper that I had in a pad.

If it buckles, let it dry and then spray the back lightly with water. Then put some heavy books on it and let it dry again. It should dry flat.
      Watercolor trick.

However....I like the texture of thegesso on the Canson, just not the Canson on its own
