I liked the paintings on Le Cart Green and Uart Dark 400 best out of the ones that you tried. I am doing something similiar, but with my own experiments: I have lots of different card/paper so decided to buy three different grades of pumice, plus some Winsor and Newton clear gesso (which is a bit too smooth for my liking) then experiment to see what works and what doesn't. I find that if I dry the mix quickly with a hairdryer once it is on the card/paper it stops it warping so I am able to use even quite thin card. It is good fun trying it all out.
I have the sampler and hope to take the challenge this weekend! Still a great video 4 years later. Love the way you let the character of each paper show through, you can really see the differences in character of the paper at the end in the closeups!
Karen your videos are getting better and better. Credit to both you and , your husband behind the camera. Thank you for making this and putting the paper challenge out there for us. There are small things you do that are so helpful. Stating the month and year in this video will be helpful for those referencing in the future. I am learning so much from you. I loved being able to compare your works at the end of the video too. Thank you.
Thank you for your teaching! I watched a different video of yours where you applied clear gesso tinted with yellow and I tried it for the first time last night. I used Liquitex and was surprised how well the grit worked. It was a life changer. I loved that I was able to lay it down thin or thickly for a gardenscape. The texture it created was amazing and gave the image so much more life than the perfectly uniform sandpapers I have been testing.
Karen, thank you for a really useful exercise! As always, light, educational and very helpful. And thank you for sharing the links to your other resources. Absolutely charmed with your watermelons on your blog! So delicious and mouthwatering. 😊👍
When I bought my first pastels I got the sampler paper pack, I didn't like a lot of the papers initially, but I have found my preferences have changed quite a bit. I hated Uart and Pastel Premier but now I like both of them. I also hated Rembrandt pastels, regretted buying a 30 color half set, now I really appreciate them and I like them on canson mi-tentes paper, which I also used to hate :O
@Sue W In the beginning I liked softer pastels like Unison and Mount Vision pastels, I liked La Carte, which people might think is similar to Uart but it feels really different to me, I also love PastelMat. I also used pastel pencil because I was more interested in detailed portraits. I like to give art materials a chance if I see lots of people having success, so I kept coming back to the popular papers and kept trying the Rembrandts because I felt I was missing something. Eventually things clicked and now I really appreciate them.
ckdesign I completly agree with the Canson and Rembrant combo! They get such a bad rep as beginner packs but they work really well together. Of course as long as you aren’t expecting the same outcome as the softer pastels and grippier papers.
I’ve just ordered some UArt 400 for the first time...looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for a very interesting video Karen..always enjoy your work.
Karen, great review. I have tried all but a couple of these papers. I remember talking with you at your workshop that we both disliked Canson Touch. I have a large Burgundy sheet. I think I’ll get it out and give it another try.
I've been enjoying your videos. Do you have information somewhere on the black easel boards youuse, and on what you use to mount the papers on the board when you are painting? Thanks!
I going to see what I can gather and or make and give it a try too. lol as a beginner I need all the practice I can get and trying out papers will help me decide what to try. Though I have purchased U Art and loving the results.
Personally, I agree with diet and sky holes. If you didn't use these I would be lost, lol. Thank you great idea, will be building up papers to do and make as well. Love your videos you are so approachable and the advise is awesome. I look for your videos 😁❤❤❤👏👏👏👍👍👍
Thank you Karen. I am in Australia so I was hoping you could describe the texture of Uart 400 I would like to try and find something similar to this at home. Because freight charges are too expensive. I love all your lessons. I am by nature a slow learner. So you have helped me overcome anxiety and gain confidence that it is possible for me to achieve this beautiful gift. Thank you :-)
Thank you for watching! It is much appreciated. Uart feels like sandpaper maybe middle grit not too smooth but not too rough. Fisher paper is similar if you can get that.
Aubrey, I too am in Australia, and have previously ordered Uart online from Soft Pastels. They have quite a few different papers available, and lots of yummy pastels to choose from. Their freight charge was reasonable.
Thank you for asking. You are welcome to paint along for your own practice and personal use but the resulting paintings are not to be exhibited or sold....personal use for learning purposes only.

I also like the Richeson Pastel surface! I got some at IAPS and was very happy with its perfo rmance
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it thinking it felt too rough!
Love this demo and I'd love to do the paper challenge~ Thank you!
Very interesting lesson many thanks Karen ❤️
HI Karen! I followed along and enjoyed your instruction!
I've been enjoying your videos. Do you have information somewhere on the black easel boards youuse, and on what you use to mount the papers on the board when you are painting? Thanks!
Thank you! I appreciate you watching! I use regular black foam core from the Dollar Tree and I use black artist tape to tape my paper to the board!
I going to see what I can gather and or make and give it a try too. lol as a beginner I need all the practice I can get and trying out papers will help me decide what to try. Though I have purchased U Art and loving the results.
What a wonderful idea. I get painting practice as well as trying out new papers.
Your painting at the beginning is more beautiful than mine in the end!! : (
I appreciate you watching! Since I painted this same scene 10 times it was much easier! Practice is the key:)

Hi, Karen. Enjoyed enjoyed your demo, you paint so beautifully! I’d like to try this s. Where can I find the sampler set?
I think the big difference is that it's rough, not sanded! Very different for me
Thank you. How does watercolor paper and clear gesso compare with these?
Thanks for watching. Homemade surfaces with gesso and watercolor paper tend to be rougher than commercial sanded paper.
Who in the hell are the three people that gave it a dislike? I know everyone's entitled to their opinion, but Damn!
Thanks Vicky! I appreciate your support!!
Hi Karen could you tell me if there is copyright on your tutorial paintings please. Many thanks.
Thank you for asking. You are welcome to paint along for your own practice and personal use but the resulting paintings are not to be exhibited or sold....personal use for learning purposes only.
Have you tried 300 lb. watercolor paper?
Yes! It is also a good choice. I like to use clear gesso on it to add some grit.
