I retired from a 40 year career as a commercial driver. 90% of RV drivers have no business driving a vehicle of that size. Beware of them. AARP got legislation stopped to require a special endorsement to drive a RV. Money talks!
Seriously! Especially because they're so often driven in places that are difficult to drive anyway (National Parks, Forest Service roads, rural areas, etc.). Anything bigger than a 19ft Class C should require a special endorsement.

RVs are like bikes. Anyone that had even a remote inkling to buy one, got it during the pandemic or shortly after. Things are now stagnant until something revolutionary comes to the market to make people want to change. The other issue is that alot of people bought without realizing that their use of the RVs would be significantly lower than what they thought. Now they are stuck with a massive depreciating asset that they are not using
Yep -- totally agree. The pandemic was a sugar high for RV sales, and now we are dealing with the aftermath with folks either having already bought their dream RV or are unloading purchases they regretted.
All the want-to-be 10%ers with their second homes and extra toys. When hard times hit (as they always do), they will be dumping them left and right for pennies on the dollar.

I like to watch Matt's RV reviews form time to time and his yearly trips to the EU RV shows are eye-opening. Smaller, better built, better interiors and layouts. Ours still look like the same cardboard and tin junk from the early 90s. Just with a little polish added to the turd. We could deal with that when the prices were in line with the poor construction, but now they want European prices for stapled and glued together junk? Hard pass.
I wanted to make a comment, but Tyler covered it all. We’re on the same page about RVs. I live in a very touristic region, and they’re the absolute worst. They’re SO arrogant, slowing the traffic around them, they cause so many crashes. Last year I spotted an RV dumping their sewage water in the river, a protected river with rare fish species. I took pictures of them and sent it to the environmental minister. Next day I saw their RV on a tow truck. I think they got fined over 30k because of all the resources it took to clean the river.
I drive small cars. One day I was riding in my parents RV coming back from the midwest to Los Angeles. My dad announced he was tired, and I should drive. So, I was used to driving a 2-door convertible, and then dad has me driving a bus. 😮 It wasn't that bad, but it's not a responsive vehicle. Oh, if you can't fix things on your own like my dad could, don't buy an RV.

RV warranties have major flaws. The people who build the RV don't build the refrigerator and stuff like that, so their warranty doesn't cover stuff like that. If the fridge stops working, you have to deal with the company that made the refrigerator. If you want to litigate over a faulty RV, you have to sue them in Indiana, their home turf. Everything to do with RVs is stacked in favor of the people that make them.
Here in Europe, your sales contract is with the retailer for non car things so I guess it would be same.
Most rv warranties are only for 12 months anyways
The quality of new RVs is bad, and you’d better check the contract before you buy, because dealers are putting in some very crazy no-warranty disclaimers. 😵💫
I remember a relative of mine saying a long time ago for the cost of an RV he could rent a whole lot of hotel rooms to stay in whenever he traveled and just walk away from it when he was done staying there with zero maintenance or upkeep costs. I always thought that was very sound reasoning.

An RV/Camper/Fifth Wheel Trailer & Camper/Toter Home is the equivalent of exposing your home to an earthquake nonstop for miles and days on end. Home maintenance is bad enough, your home with all the mechanicals of a big truck, the electronics of a modern car with touch screens everywhere being shaken to death and people wonder why they break all the time??? They are wonderful when you get where you’re going and horrible the rest of the time. Been there, never again. OMG! Who knew Tyler was a the missing son of Winnebago Man! We’ll name him “Traction Control Man” or “Burl Leather Man”!
Not everyone has the stomach or ability to fix problems with a camping trailer. Sure, I spend as much time maintaining my old trailer as I do living in it but I love it. It's about conquering nature when you go off grid and having your home with you on a cross country trip. It's also a science experiment when you play with solar panels, batteries, inverters etc. You either enjoy it, the journey and issues that come with it or you don't, and that's fine too.

Tyler and April are spot on with their take on the current RV Sales. One of the accounts I service an RV dealership/repair facility, I see more RVs in the back getting repaired in the front of being sold. buddy of mine over there got promoted to solely handle warranty claims.
Finally a true towing expert weighs in about the RV industry 😅. Really tho as a lifelong camper it's the best way to travel, you always have your bed, all your stuff, a place for your pet and campsites are much cheaper then hotel rooms, more then pays for the cost of fuel.
The best is a class B, but American models are trash compared to the ones they get in Europe. Still, because they ARE built on a van and have to meet automotive standards, they are much better built than Class C or trailers. And they drive like a normal van. Win-win.

@1:06 A Class B is a van chassis and body done up into a sleeper. Your Blue Whale is only slightly smaller than a Class B RV. Perhaps you're thinking of the Class-C RVs usually on offer from RV rental agencies, which is an "Incomplete" van like a Ford E450 with a box on the back.
We like RVing because of the comradery. RV groups tend to be friendly and a lot of fun. You always have your own bed, bathroom, and kitchen with a refrigerator stocked as you like. Quality has always been an issue and even companies known for quality no longer have good build quality with incredible stories of woe from new RV owners. Many states require a drivers license upgrade (over 26,000 Lbs.) which is comforting seeing that many RVers got into the lifestyle when they were on in years and no one has monitored them since they got their licenses as teenagers. Believe it or not, the cost of an RV trip is typically about the same as flying and staying at hotels, except that you have to own or rent the vehicle at additional cost.
I bought a Travel Trailer last year and I live in Montana. Come up to Montana for a visit and I'll show you why we love our travel trailer. Getting lost deep in the mountains and spending the weekend off grid is a great way to reset during the summer.

I'm glad you brought up the quality issues. I'm a long time RV enthusiast. Models built since 2015, and especially after the pandemic started are just terrible. I spent the last two summers in a late 90s camper. It was heads above every newer model I've been in. Certainly not as "fancy" or aesthetically pleasing as the new ones, but much more solid in every way.
RV/Camp life isn't for everyone, and not for you...but for many of us it's not any more problematic than any other hobby and a whole lot of fun.
I’ve had Travel trailers for 14 years and a MH for the last 5. I love them, but you have to be smart in how you buy. Currently looking for a Diesel Pusher. I don’t buy new, only used usually around 5 years old. The RV industry has been a joke for many years, since Covid it’s only gotten worse. Right now Forest River has a recall on propane tanks falling off. There fix is have the customer take a picture and send it to them and they will let you know if it needs fixing, instead of just bringing them all back and doing the proper repair to all of them.
The industry needs to be put in check. Maybe this will do it but I doubt it.
And I will never stay in a hotel. Stuck in one room with a small window. A bed that you have no idea who was in it last. A campsite is far cheaper and I can get out and walk around as well as sit outside and have a fire. It’s a much better way to travel the country. Not to mention I can have any view I want from waterfront, Mountain View and lake view.
The problem is not just price. They also flat out deny warranty claims and the contract keeps the deal from being responsible. When your warranty is rejected you have signed to arbitration with a company they hired and if you do sue, the contract forces you to use the courts in one specific state, not yours.

Many people have been buying used RVs and end up living in them, because they can't afford a house.
That's Los Angeles. So many people living in old rvs because they can't afford rent with their pay.

@@williamhinshaw6838 Some of those people chose to buy RVs because they want to travel. They're buying six-figure RVs, they could buy a house if they wanted to.
It isn't just the cost. The newer RV's are garbage and the word is out. Not to mention that all the RV parks are overbooked. It's as if everyone decided to do this RV thing at the same time.
My aunt and uncle just got out of the RV game because of all these reasons. They've had some kind of RV for 40 years.
That said, they had no kind of a special license and my uncle is a lousy driver. Not too long before they left the RV life they clipped someone leaving a gas station. The insurance covered it, but their rates went up $1K a month.
Live in my ‘22 30 ft Airstream for 2 years and rent my mortgage-free house & live in front👍🏻

There definitely is a question of quality. Doing your research prior to buying one is a big must do. I did 8 months of daily research with multiple drives out of state to go look at an rv. Ended up with a rv with a great build quality with the manufacturer who stands by their product. Heck i just had a vendor of one of the parts used warranty and shipped me a replacement part for free last week. The problem with the rv industry the more expensive ones usually have better build quality and support but you are paying for it. The average person is buying on the cheaper end of the industry which leads up to a bunch of problems.
My sister works at a RV dealer here in CO and she told me not to buy anything built during or after the pandemic. The build quality has tanked.

I went to southern IL to see the eclipse and noticed several new & used RV dealers on the way thru TN, KY and IL and thought about all those RVs that were bought during COVID and are probably now rotting away
My RV (Riverforest) is crap; I have had to replace almost everything that could be replaced. Plus, like you said, gas is insane. To park it at a resort, it'll cost you over $100 per night. It makes no sense anymore.

EV sales risen a bit in March not because “ford lowered production” but because people in March started to buy USED EVs and Because of Fleet purchases by corporate businesses and government municipalities. Look at data!
RVs are nice when you race at the track. If you are there for the weekend there is no commute! If you have a toter or a class A it’s pretty well set up to tow!
I own a class A RV and yeah the maintenence can be expensive, but insurance is on it is cheaper than anything else I own with wheels. Yeah it gets bad mileage but tow a car on a dolly and stay at a campground when you get there and it's significantly cheaper than staying in a nice hotel. Not to mention having a full kitchen and bathroom while you're on the road and long intervals between stops. To each their own but I love owning one
Ive had a motorhome for 10 years. You should definitely try one. My Newmar is super comfortable. Doing 8 hrs in the seat is easy. I also tow a car and its pretty easy. They get smaller the more you drive them. The bad rep comes from the retiree set that Is in no real hurry to get anywhere.
Get one and try it. Hilarity will commence.
I'd have a 5th wheel trailer, behind a big pickup truck. An electric pickup with range extender and a humongous and extending solar array on the roof of the trailer could generate serious energy to refill the trcuk battery and the trailer battery (for systems, not drive probably). With solar charging, you could hang out at a very remote location for a long time. The pickup without trailer used for supply drives and sightseeing in rougher terrain.
since covid a lot of people have found that they do not have to go to a office to work,they bought a good used rv and live in it and travel around and have a good life.
RV lack of warranty support is a disgrace!
Not only are they very expensive, but most people (old people) only use them a few times year. Unless you plan on living in it, they aren't financially feasible. The out takes were hilarious!
Hoovster, I've built yachts in Europe for the last 40 years. Yacht sales dip and rise like the RV industry, very close. In the last 10 years there's a pretty huge waiting list for QUALITY, the cheapy end of the market has crashed. Regular families are kinda shut out of the market unless you're at the scum end of pontoon boats.
A Class B is built inside the original body of a production van. The Sprinter Overland is a good example of a Class B. The Class A is the bus-like "bread box" RV body on a large chassis. The Class C is a truck or van cab & chassis with an RV body from the B-Pillar to the back. Class B and C aren't that hard to drive. Class A isn't that hard either, but they are big.
RV lenders can be quite predatory too
And it’s a lot of money to actually use a few times a year. Storage can be high if you have to store them off site. Then there is the price of renting a campsite if you can even find one. I will use my car and get Airbnbs live nicer and save money
The two largest mistakes retired folks make are 1. buying an RV and 2. a condo in Fl.
My brother bought an RV and as he was driving off the lot he started to brake and several gallons of water soaked him coming down on the inside of the windshield. He complained , left it and they called him a week later and said problem fixed. This time he got off the lot and his wife called him on their walkie talkies , she said there was something wrong under the rig because one side was way lower than the other. So back they go , and the run around begins. Blb bla this bla bla its the chassis mfg's problem . Now his wife happens to be a pretty smart lawyer and litigation begins. After about 6 months they go to arbitration and the dealers rep figures out that this is not going away so eventually after signing a bunch of paper they actually get their money back.
My wife ( the non camping model) tears up and recycles any RV info that happens to cross her line of sight. I'm safer that way, and besides that 7 years in the Army cured me of sleeping out doors.
As a full-time RVer, I would have to agree on the RV industry quality that's gone down the toilet. The sweet spot for RVs is 2000-2010🚌
Impressed how well you covered this topic Tyler. Considered full time RV for some time. Decided against it due to service/maintenance, rising camping costs, and poor quality. At nearly 6’4” and late sixties, decided I didn’t want the stress.Also impressed with how very far you have come since your first Car Issues work.
Our Class C, Sprinter-based RV gets 15 MPG, so it's not so bad as you assumed.

Well, Tyler, it's hard to sore with eagles when you drive with turkeys!
It's really just on how you look at it. We have and rent it a couple of times a year and that pays for all the cost of owning it plus makes us extra money. We like camping and having our own "home away from home" when we travel. We travel at least one a month and for a week each time. It's normally $150 for the whole week at state parks, so no, it's not cheaper to stay at a hotel..

After working on RVs for the past 23 years, I've come up with several different constant reminders to bring customers or prospective buyers to the reality of RV ownership:
"The older the better."
(but only if the unit was properly maintained and repaired).....because an older unit in 'Good Condition' is almost always gonna be more reliable than a 'Brand New' unit that will need the bugs worked out before it can be trusted.
"They don't build them right,they just build them
Right Now!"
When pertaining to newer modern RVs(this is 10 fold if the unit was built during the Pandemic or finished around 4:30 on a Friday afternoon.)
"There's not much 'R&D' in an RV."
Rarely is there any 'Research&Development' put into the design and manufacture of RVs,..they just stick parts where they will fit in the floorplan design regardless of actual practical locations,ease of access for general use, and repairs.
"The letters 'RV' can stand for several different things from 'Recreational Vehicle' to 'Ruined Vacation' depending on the initial build quality,maintenance,and the companency of those involved in making the repairs, upgrades, and/or modifications.
And my golden rule for choice of brands or age of purchase:
If buying a newer unit,try and find an RV that's at least 1½ to 2 years old because most of the warranty and go back repairs have already been completed(i.e.'bugs worked out.')because if you buy new from the dealer chances are the first year and a half of ownership will probably involve several long and inconvenient stays at a repair facility or visits from mobile RV repair technicians during your trip.
If buying an older unit, try and find a unit that isn't on too many 'brand specific' complaint forums, as there are many RV Clubs online that can provide positive and negative reviews on common issues of the same brand and model you are considering buying before making a commitment.
Sound like too much of a risk?
Try renting an RV for some short trips first before taking that leap into ownership. You will have a chance to experience 'first hand' whether this is an 'I gotta have it!' decision or just one of those 'Flash in the pan.'/'So glad I didn't end up in the deep end!' moments.

In my experience, the bigger the vehicle the easier it is to drive. Also RVs certainly are moving apartments.

used to own a camper(trailer, no motor) I thought it was great. I would never consider an RV because all the extra maintenance and they have always had reliability issues, it's just that now it's gotten out of control. When you toss in the unbelievable impact that inflation has had on them, it's no wonder they aren't selling. Oh, and one more fun fact. The finance companies are quite well aware of how what they are, so it's not like buying a car, they actually look at it more like an unsecured loan, so that's the kind of interest you pay.
I can tell you from hands on experience detailing fleets of Recreational Vehicles is that those things are made out of cardboard and kayak material. The build quality it is shabby for the price and long term functionality is never considered

We have an RV. For desert camping with toys.
Tent camping still happens as well. Getting out there and doing things as a family is where it’s at.

Um, Class B motorhomes are your van conversions. Class C are truck or van front end with what looks like a box on the back with a cab over bunk. Class A motorhomes look more like a bus. Source 15 years building them for Winnebago Ind in Forest City, Iowa.
Another disincentive...my city has very restrictive, almost HOA like rules when it comes to parking your RV or boat on your own driveway. And the have residential garage height restrictions so there is no way you can park a taller RV or boat in your garage. So you have to pay for storage or risk getting the letter of non-compliance from the city. I might consider renting one but at this point, would never buy one. There are plenty of RV based RUclips channels where they live full time on the road but even the channels that attempt a positive spin report issues where they have maintenance or repairs on the RV or tow vehicle.
Those sprinter vans are class B motor homes. A class A is a "bus" and a class C is a van chassis with a bunk over the top. These numbers include towabales...travel trailers and 5th wheels.
It’s market saturation and quality that has RV’s on the ropes right now. We saw it coming and sold ours near the top of the market. Had a Jayco Eagle for 3 years and it was in the shop at least 6 months of that.
I think the exception on RVs in the senior citizen snowbirds that go for the north down to Texas and Florida for the winter. They have some really tight communities with people like them that they wouldn’t get staying in a hotel.

As somebody who lives in an area,with twisty,up n down,narrowmoutain rds, was part of emergency services. Tourists in RV's are brutal,especially rentals.
We tried 2 different RV's. I am not a fan of RV's. Hotel here I come.

What we call a caravan, you call a trailer. We generally call a RV a mobile home.

The quality issues are not due to supply chain issues like they say they are. We bought our camper new in 2017. The company we bought it from had it more than half the season that year fixing issues. Quality is garbage from cheap materials and poor workmanship.
The slide-outs on most travel trailers are not hydraulic but are instead two cables attached to basically a winch/electric motor. This isn't rocket science to get right - but you DO need to hire an engineer to design it properly instead of eyeballing it. The issue is, of course, that the cables come off of the pulleys due to excessive slack/bad design.
Class C RV are like renting a u haul, cab over, and you don’t have to have a truck license to rent them. All RV, Class, A, B ,C are not 200k. So there’s that. You should try one then report on it. Some of your concerns are valid but many are not. I mean if you can spend 300k on a barn alone, I am sure you can rent one for one week for a few hundred.
I completely agree. I have friends that decided to sell their house and buy a RV. so they can travel they didn't bother to pay attention to campsite laws that say most RVs have to be at least 20 years or newer in order to be able to park at most KOA Campgrounds. so just being able to find a place to Camp with the thing is hard and I live in California they now live out of it because the RV gets horrible gas mileage it doesn't run that great and they basically spent all their money on that and their vehicles to get around. so now they don't have a house. I dont think it was a smart move.
Ford's rv chassis factory in detroit is the slowest of their factories and send their "slow" employees there for a reason.
Another reason for poor sales is the quality of construction has dropped drastically.
