    I have the 2022 Speed Machine 130. I had them professionally fitted in September. My left leg was out of flat by 1.3 degrees. This was an upgrade from a Head Vector 110 I had 240 days on these over three years. I went from a 27.5 in the Head to a 26.5 in the Nordica. So much more power with higher edge angles in my carving turns this season. Highly recommend them.

      really, never had a problem with the flex? I found 130's to start hurting after a while I've been skiing for a little over 10 years averaging 35 days per year, 110 I found has been a perfect balance between comfort and performance, still stiff enough for the aggressive stuff while being nice and comfortable.

    First what is happening to your comment section?! Second I am bigger than Bob and ended up with the 120's. For a few reasons like when landing I like to have my ankle flex not just my knees. And as I don't ski crazy aggressive all the time comfort is important to me but the 120's step up and give me all the performance I ask of them when I do turn it up a notch or five. Great review guys keep it up.

      Hi Chris!
      Sometimes the spammers seem to get at us pretty quickly. It's always interesting to me to see who ends up in what flex of boot and why. It's definitely too simplistic to state that a 130 boot is for experts, 120 for advanced, 110 for intermediate, and so on. There's a lot more to it than that, and I hope that came through in the video. Thanks for your input!

    It’s cool the way you guys can put a feel into words and make it so we understand. You explained these boots so perfectly and I’m glad I purchased the Sport Machine at 102 last instead of the Speed Machine at 100. That Speed Machine I am sure I’d be ok with those for racing but for everyday skiing I’m glad that I personally went a bit wider. And the only reason I chose the Sport Machine was because of you and your research. By far the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned and just fine for Beer league. The way you explained the Bonafide and Mantra M5 in your reviews is crazy how you nailed it. Thank you for all your research.

      @@T-Mak-s7x Thanks for your quick reply! I JUST pulled the trigger on the Sportmachine at a well known store here in Canada @ 25% off. They didn't have my size in the 110, so I was a bit hesitant stepping up to the 120.
      In one of SE's responses somewhere, they mentioned that we could soften the flex a bit by removing/loosening some of the screws to step it down to the lower flex feel, so that's what I'll do if necessary. Looks like I made the right decision based on their feedback, yours, and the fact that I can adjust it slightly :)
      Thanks again - Rob

    Nice work fellas,
    Great discussion and very interesting.
    As a bootfitter it still amazes me how much difference the liner makes.
    Your comments on the difference between the 130 and 120 liners was bang on.
    The hardest part can sometimes be matching up the liner performance and flex requirements for different skiers.
    The mention of the differences in your flexibility, and the effect it has on choosing an appropriate flex in your boots is much overlooked.
    Well done

    I’ve been skiing the 2018 version of the speed machine 130 now for a few years. I’m like bob. My ankle flex is not insane. I like to ski technical terrain and sometimes feel as though the stiffness of the boot stops me from reaching my full potential. I also find my current boot to have pretty bad heal hold and major pain points as the day progresses. I think I’ll have to see a boot fitter and check out the speed machine 120. Seems like what I’m looking for. Good comfort, easier flex, good heal hold. It also costs less which is nice as well. Thanks for covering this topic.

    Awesome review. I have a similar story as Jeff, same 24.5 narrow feet. I had a Tecnica Mach1 MV, it never really fits, lack of support. Last season I switched to a ProMachine 120 (fitted by Olympic Bootworks Tahoe). It fits right out of the box, with infinite support from ankle to the toes. But just like Jeff, Promachine was really hard on my feet, and it's too stiff for my level, I can't ankle flex as much as I want to (this 120 is stiffer than some 130 flex boots).
    Just watched your video last week and ordered a new Speedmachine 110 (online, haha). It still locks my ankle like Promachine, with the right amount of snugness on my forefoot, and I can finally flex it. BTW comparing it to the Mach1 120 side by side, Speedmachine 110 is the stiffer one.

    Excellent review. Makes me laugh listening to you guys talking about bleeding in the boots (smashed a few big toenails and have had some bloodied shins after days of skiing in a row) with regards to boot fitting over the years. I have wide (EE) along with high instep feet so ski boots have been brutal over the years. Salomons, Tecnica's and now Scarpas. Hoping you guys find the time to do some touring boot reviews and specifically high performance touring boots that can serve as resort and touring boots. Life is full of compromises, but I'm really liking my Scarpa Maestrale XTs. Curious about the Dynafit Radical Pro and others with a wide last. Thanks as always for the excellent reviews!

    how one should understand when it is a good moment to try a probably switch to higher flex boots? I'm a beginner (probably lvled up to lower intermediate :D ) last year, after 10 years pause if started learning skiing from scratch and spent about 25 light days skiing in total (hours combined, on piste + infinite-slope machine). I've started with something super flexible on the artificial slope, on real mountain I've started with 90, the second half of the season I switched to 110s. when I tried 110s for the first, I was pleased to fill more control, my technique became better, and more confident. Unfortunately, in rentals, I was not been able to find 120s flex boots. For this year I'm going to buy my first pair of boots. First was thinking about 120s, then forced myself to get 110s. I'm 175cm, 95 kg (overweight, with some experience in sports, and heavylifting. at some point going to drop way bellow 90kg :) ). So in my opinion 110s should be ok for me as a beginner. How does skier understand that he has to switch and make an investment into 120s or 130s?

    • @Ripjaw57
      @Ripjaw57 10 месяцев назад

      To my understanding (after researching & honing my skills and knowing what I prefer skiing) the 120’s are for people like me who want a good portion of that control (stiffness) but don’t want to compromise maneuverability in let’s say sketchy double blacks (with a boot that’s too too stiff->the 130 in this case). The 130 flex should be thought out as you want to be a racer & do groomers all day. I generally will do 2 groomer runs to warm up & then head for the trees lol. Initially I thought boot flex was some sort of checkpoint in boot graduation but not really ..,

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +1

      Boots are tougher than skis to do reviews, so stars have to align properly for that to happen. As for Booster, as a former mogul competitor, I'm Booster until I can't ski--it's a must-have for my boots. That said, as I've transitioned out of bump-bashing, I'm kind of digging the burlier power straps that come on the high-end boots these days, including the one on the Speedmachine 130. Unless you get a WC Booster strap that does not have elasticity, the top-end power straps make the boot stiffer up top. Hope that helps!

    I've been in Full Tilt First Chairs for 8 years and have finally admitted that they are packed out. I also realise that my skiing needs a boot with more control. The First Chairs were 120 Flex and 99 last - both of which suited me perfectly. Do these flex and last figures translate anywhere near closely to the Nordica Pro Machine / Speed Machine boots? Local shops are out of stock atm so I will have to wait to do proper boot fitting but I was just looking for an idea of whether the Pro or Speed last will likely be the better fit. I'm pretty sure the 130 flex will be too much boot for me but will obviously try on as many options as possible. I'm about 215lbs and an aggressive (if aged) skier!

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +1

      The 99 last is right in between the Pro and Speed, and while they all fit differently, I'd guess that the Speedmachine 120 would be a more accurate and direct replacement to the Full Tilt, mainly because the Promachine has a very stiff liner and is very low over the instep.

Starting to feel a bit loose, maybe time to look for a new pair. You said the new 110s get the same core tech. How different are the 110s vs 120s?

      Hey Andrew! There are a lot more similarities between the 110 and 120 than 120 and 130. Basically the same liner (softer with Primaloft) as the 120 and the shells are pretty much identical aside from the difference in flex.

    Hey guys, thank you for this great review!
    I wonder how the Speedmachine flex can be customized by the adjustment screws. Namely, I'm used to ski in 110 flex boots, but as for this new Speedmachine series I would prefer to buy 120s because of the design & color. Does it make sense to buy a pair of 120s and then adjust the flex to feel more like a pair of 110s? And generally, is it ok to play with the flex adjustment, or it's always better to stay with the original flex declared on the boots?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Год назад +1

      Hi Mario! That's a perfectly reasonable thing to do. You can soften the flex of a boot quite a lot by removing rear rivets. In my experience, there's also not a huge difference between 110 and 120 flex boots. I just got the 130 flex Speedmachine and ended up softening it a little bit, and it actually feels somewhat similar to the flex of my 120s from last season. So, yes, you can do that. In general, you can always make a boot softer, but it's very hard to make one stiffer, so starting with a stiffer flex often makes sense.

    Really fantastic video - I'm sitting here almost laughing because I fall right in the middle of both of you and ended up in a Nordica Speed Machine Elite (99 last I believe), have gone back and forth between Alpine & GripWalk soles, like the denser/harder cork liner, but it is NOT warm (I went with wool Silas liners & heated socks), the Grilamid plastic is light but brutally hard when cold, I tried Tecnica Mach1 120 in LV, got them to fit but they collapse under load.

      I would have loved to talk a bit about plastics, but these are pretty straightforward with the PU build. If you're an aggressive skier, and have even moderate ankle flexion, it certainly makes anything under a 130 feel collapsible.

    Hello, I just bought the new Speed Machine 110, It has that cork liner the 120 has I believe it has the same liner, however I got gifted a brand new unused Speed Machine 130 liner from my ski shop because Nordica sent one for some reason, and Ive been a long time customer. Im trying to decide which I want to heat mold and keep in my boot, if I want to keep the 110 liner or use the 130. I know you said the 130 liner has stiffer plastic and that foam in the back so will putting it in my 110 make it feel like a 115/120? Do you think it would be more or less comfortable? I really like that adjustable tongue the 130 liner has, and that back leathery feeling peice with the N stamp on it (hopefully you know what im talking about) too so im not sure what I should do. If you could maybe list some pros and cons of both, or tell me if putting the 130 liner in is a terrible idea or I should so do it, any feedback would be great! Thank you in advance.

      You have them both, I'd use them both and see what you like more. It doesn't have to be an either/or thing. The 130 liner will feel tighter and stiffer while the 110 will be softer and more comfortable. Totally depends on what you're looking for.

I’m looking to get a new boot, and of course I will try them out in store, but there’s only so much info your feet will tell you just standing and flexing in store. Would you recommend I go for a 120 or 130? At my weight will I regret not going for the stiffer boot?

      There's only one way to eliminate the fear of regret, and that's to send it to the stiffer boot. You can make the 130 a bit softer by removing a rivet in the back.

Now I have found that the volume has increased so that I have to tighten the buckles very tight, and have adjusted the macro buckle on the top buckle in order to get a tighter fit. So I’m concerned that the liner has compressed a lot or something else has made the volume increase. Any input on why this might have occurred and if there is any way to prevent or reduce this?

      Sounds like a normal boot-packing out situation to me! If the plastic fits appropriately, you should never really have to buckle your boots too tightly. If you go to buy new boots, I'd suggest trying a shell size down. They'll be more snug at first for sure, but after the break-in period they should fit great.

      HI Perry!
      We were just talking about this the other day, unrelated to this video. It's interesting that Lange has enormous success with their RS 130, and that's considered to be so much more of a race boot than Promachine 130 or Technica Mach 1 130 LV. This either speaks to Lange's ability to build a fantastic consumer boot or other brands lack of desire to put their top-end boots in the high end recreation category. It's not like the Dobermann is much more of a race boot than RS 130, so I'm not quite sure why they don't push that boot more, especially with the success of Promachine. Either way, Dobermann is no-nonsense, with a heavier feel and very stiff plastic. You're getting the performance, but you're paying for it with a complete lack of comfort. Have fun!
