I met Royce in 90-91 when he was doing seminars on the east coast with Rorion. In fact we were among the first in the east to get a Gracie Blue Belt back then when nobody knew anything about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We were so proud of that at the time.
I had been teaching karate an gymnastics in my own school at the time and Royce was into learning to do back flips and back handsprings. He was so young and friendly. And he is the most gifted teacher I’ve ever met, and I’ve known many Olympic level coaches. I have still not met anyone who is as naturally gifted a teacher. And I’m an excellent teacher myself and so I’ve always had a deep appreciation for excellent coaches and teachers and it was so impressive to me that his teaching was so accomplished at such a young age, although having Helio Gracie as your father helped quite a bit I’m sure, but it goes beyond even that influence I think.
I worked with Rorion and met Rickson back then and they are fantastic as is the entire family, including the Macchado’s. But Royce always impressed me so much with his natural insights as a teacher. He’s very gifted that way and I’m not sure many people know that about him.

Royce voiced the Gracie Mantra. As far as there being "BAD STUDENTS", I believe he was referring strictly to Jiu-Jitsu students. The difference being, GENERALLY SPEAKING, is that a Jiu-Jitsu student is usually there by CHOICE, whereas a school student is MANDATED by state law to be there and oftentimes, they DON'T WANNA BE THERE, right??? But all that aside, IMHO, the Gracie's DO have the best teaching methodology that I've ever encountered so far in Jiu-Jitsu.

My tour was over and getting on the airplane to fly back to states but the terrorists attacks happened back in the states so all airplanes were grounded and had to stay in the airport. Joyce gracies plane landed on our base because all planes were being grounded, and I got to meet him. He put on an exhibition for us marines at the airport while we had downtime waiting for the go ahead to fly back to the states. He was a super nice guy, highly respectable, and very polite. He’s as professional as it gets. colossus808e it was a rear choke with his gi. Watch the footage, even the announcers sitting ringside looking right at it called it as him grabbing his gi.
He was literally the only person allowed to wear their style’s uniform. Ken Shamrock had to lose his wrestling shoes, others had to drop portions of their gear. Gracie was literally the only one who was allowed to wear the entire thing and he used it completely to his advantage, of course.
It was all setup to be a Gracie win, a glorified commercial for GJJ. I’m not saying Royce wasn’t or isn’t still a good fighter, I’m saying he had an unfair advantage by design and he used it.

Ryan Russell, I’m willing to wager you don’t actually train jiu jitsu, do you? The footage is obvious. It’s a classic Gracie Jiu Jitsu rear naked choke. One arm under the chin, line up elbow with opponent’s chin, other arm goes behind their neck. I’m done here.

He not only realized the superiority of jiu jitsu over all the other fighting styles but he created a huge family of practitioners who brought the art to the rest of the planet. @@maitrekano And, how many judokas can beat a BJJ/GJJ player in a non art based rule set since then? That 1 loss doesn't discredit the effectiveness of GBJJ over other fighting styles.
I wouldn't say "all" others cause that's too concrete. But, Helio lost to who was literally the best JJJ/Judoka in Japan and had been for years, while BJJ was still evolving. But, Helio also choked out the #2 JJJ player. So, there's that.
BJJ has definitely shown to be one of the best MAs. And, they even added the kimura to it's art and developed strats around it.
Most TMAs, like JJJ, have stayed stagnant in their traditions, regardless of it's real world applications. BJJ/GJJ has been evolving to be more effective, based on what does and doesn't work in real life scenarios

@@MyZ001 I agree with you that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has definitely come a long way from it’s origins. However with that said Judokas most definitely can beat BJJ practitioners even out side of the mat. In fact I would say it is much better outside of the mat. I say this for a variety of reasons. First is that Judo also has submissions like chokes and joint locks. Judokas would definitely know how to escape them. And secondly they are not afraid of take downs. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu doesn’t have the best take downs and that is a big reason why some Jiu Jitsu guys have a lot of trouble in the MMA world. Judoka on the other hand has good take down defence. Thirdly slamming is much more dangerous when you don’t land on the mat. One slam on solid ground or concrete will end the fight especially for BJJ guys who aren’t taught how to break a fall. And Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi will make it even worse as Judokas are used to using that to their advantage in slams as well. Overall I highly doubt a BJJ practitioner will win in a confrontation against a Judoka outside the mat. There is a very valid reason why Helio choose to have his bout against Kimura on soft mats. Slams are no joke.

@ Callum March : your claim : "to show bjj is not a big mans game" is a nice marketing trick because in the open weight World BJJ championships in the last 15 years all open weight BJ World champions are over 100kg besides 1 or 2 that are over 90kg.
No BJJ fighter of Royce Gracie 80kg weight has won the open weight World championship for the last 15 years. At equal or almost equal technique level, size and weight will always matter 9 out of 10 times.
All respect due to Royce Gracie legacy but in 1990's Royce Gracie didn't have to face the real highest skill heavyweights in grappling :
      - Royce didn't fight Aleksandr Karelin
      - Royce didn't fight Malkhaz Beruashvili
      - Royce didn't fight David Douillet
      - Royce didn't fight Chris Dolman
      - Royce didn't fight Fedor Emelianenko
Even in lighter weight classes Royce didn't officially even fight Rickson in the UFC, which would have debunked the selling argument "not a big mans game".
Royce was amazing because besides Shamrock and Severn almost nobody in UFC had a high ground game level.
All respect due but in 1990's Royce Gracie didn't have to face the real highest skill heavyweights in striking :
      - Royce didn't fight Mike Tyson
      - Royce didn't fight Lennox Lewis
      - Royce didn't fight Evander Holyfield
      - Royce didn't fight Shannon Briggs
      - Royce didn't fight Ernesto Hoost
      - Royce didn't fight Peter Aerts
      - Royce didn't fight Andy Hug
      - Royce didn't fight Hajime Kasumi
      - Royce didn't fight Emanuel Pinda or Marc Pyrée or Alain Le Hetet
The early UFC where fun to watch but most people competing where far from being the best in their respective martial art.
Even now it's the case :you already see what an retired real Olympic level Greco Roman wrestler Yoel Romero does to the UFC ranks.
Imagine what Mijain Lopez or Teddy Riner or Marcus Buchecha Almeida would do to the UFC rankings.
Henry Cejudo and Khabib are among the few who have real highest top World champion level ground game and it shows in their rankings in the UFC.
Also Rico Verhoeven, Badr Hari, Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua would obliterate, with some take down counter game, most UFC fighters who couldn't bring them down.

I like Royce, but I think he needs to give Chuck Norris more credit and respect. I'm one of Mr. Norris' Black Belts and I was at the Chuck Norris convention he holds every year for his Black Belts when he brought 12 of the Gracies to the convention. In 1988 Mr. Norris paid for all 12 to come to Vegas and do a seminar on Gracies Jujitsu. It was the FIRST time the Gracies were in America, and it really was a wonderful experience to train with them. Mr. Norris told the story of Royce father choking him out and that was the reason he wanted his Black Belts to learn Gracie Jujitsu. Mr. Norris spoke highly of their father and incorporated Gracie Jujitsu into the Chuck Norris System and those techniques are still taught today in the Chuck Norris System, which is one of the FIRST, MMA styles of fighting. Now I'm not saying the Gracies wouldn't have made it to America, but certainly not a quickly had Mr. Norris not trained with them, paid for them to come to America to our convention. That act in itself deserves more credit than Royce has given Mr. Norris in this video.

Royce is so bloody tough. He beat some of the toughest in the world. Those guys were real fighters, the real deal. The fact that he kept on winning says a lot. Royce had a major part in the success of mma. Imagine coming from Brazil and fighting those crazy tough guys with almost no rules and no protection. BJJ is effective but in order to win he had to deal with standup fighters, which is not necessarily part of normal BJJ training. Many world class fighters realized that they had no choice but to master BJJ to a high level in order to be able to last against the Royce Gracies of the fight game. Georges St Pierre proved how much of an advantage it is years after Royce won. GSP used BJJ to become one of the all time greats, and arguably the GOAT of mma. I think Rickson Gracie was the best of his time. He was a level above everyone in BJJ and never lost in mma. Who knows how he would have done today, but back in his prime days, no one was even close.

    • @jamesgreen4080
      @jamesgreen4080 6 лет назад +6

The Gracie's started the UFC to promote/showcase their skills, they had been doing challenges for many years and were very successful beating allcomers, in UFC 1 Ken shamrock was told that he couldn't kick if he wore wrestling boots as these were considered a weapon, so he was under the impression that Royce wouldn't be able to use his Gi as a weapon, so when Royce applied ( I think suso jime ) he thought that it was an illegal move and although he tapped he thought that the ref would recognise this.

    • @xxPanteraxxx
      @xxPanteraxxx 6 лет назад +6

The Gracie’s hand picked ALL the fighters in the first 5 UFCs because they were the promoters. That was what Don Frye and Dan Severn have been saying for years. They hand picked and fed Royce’s opponents, then when the Gracie’s stopped promoting it, Royce stopped fighting in it. UFC 5 was the last one the Gracie’s promoted and they set it up where Royce didn’t have to fight through the brackets, but instead set it up as one super fight.

I always wonder about twisting fingers and toes. Chuck norris has a Bjj black belt! That’s another reason to respect him. I always liked chuck. He doesn’t act like a fancy ego tripper. Just shows by the fact that his bjj black belt is not known. It is very very hard to earn that belt from the gracies. Great video. Royce is so cool. No BS. He is a real fighter who loves it, nit for the ego trip but for the challenge, and I respect that so much. Those big talking bozos make me sick, not the ones who do it for promoting, but the ones who believe their BS. I smile when I see a big talker hug his opponent after a fight, win or lose and congratulate him. That’s the way it should be. Mixed martial arts is so much more interesting that boxing or wrestling or even pure bjj. I hope they never allow eye gouging or biting. It will destroy people and you don’t want to ruin lives. Biting is less dangerous but it’s also a pure pain thing thats not needed to make things real. You could win a fight with biting on the street but not likely in the octagon. It would only be an ugly thing that is unnecessary to prove dominance. I also worry about payoffs. That ruined boxing for me, I saw Paciou lose a fight that he clearly won. I have not yet seen that in mma. I think it will never be tolerated. But money seems to destroy most things so why not mma. For now, it’s cool, very cool. The thing that really bugged me and lost my respect for a fighter was when you know who attacked that bus. Please world, let’s keep mma in the mindset of people like GSP and the Gracies. Keep out the BS.

Not true.....it all has to do with Rorion Gracie. He had control over his little brother Royce and could not control the family champion Rickson Gracie. In addition, Rorion become a partner in the UFC, which gave more decision making to Rorion and “used” this argument to discard Rickson. Rorion as a lawyer wanted to keep exclusive rights and make money. So he chose Royce. Then, he “somehow” made Rickson sign a contract not to fight in the US which forced Rickson to go to Japan (I personally heard this from one of Ricsons’ student that moved from California and trained with Carlos Machado in Dallas).
Later they (Gracies) enter in a “legal dispute” for the name and logo “Gracie.” Today.....Rorion is worth 50 million dollars as he sold the UFC and gained certain rights and Rickson 5 million fighting in Japan. The law suit between Rosion and members of the family Gracie created cracks and divided the family. To keep profits behind the name brand, they try to keep the dispute under media control. Personally, they are all great athletes and I still remember in 1993 cheering for Royce as he fought Dan Savern (classic) with a bunch of people here in Texas. I prefer now the Hélio Gracie philosophy to train as self defense and not Carlo Gracie (competition). Jiu Jitsu today is another “business,” but I still like the simple philosophy of the founders based in their life style, simplicity, and diet as a way to leave your life! We can no longer talk about martial arts without the name Gracie. To me it was an honor to have as sansei Carlos Machado, Allen Mohler (best teacher I had), Terry Corkran, and Rafael Formiga. .
