Dear Ruffian, you shouldn't have gone so young, but you were a champion and it seems they often die to young to the worst of deaths. but it was your time, and god let you through the pearly gates of heaven where you run your heart out and you cannot die forever running with the other lost champions, lost but not forgotten Ruffian
According to the write up on Ruffian's death and the interview with Bill Nack, the first reporter on the scene, the mare continued to try and race even with the damaged leg flopping around. He could see Ruffian's leg was badly broken and the outcome was unlikely to be happy. He asked a vet as they put an inflatable splint on her leg what the prognosis was, which the answer was "Not good". Bill Nack said he thought " Oh jesus, we going to lose her". Initially, she survived the surgery, but post surgery is when things went wrong. On waking up, Ruffian started screaming and thrashing her legs causing the cast to slip and damaging her left elbow. She was euthanized to stop her suffering any more. Her reactions were similar to that of a child coming round after surgery, except that the patient weighed 1 500lbs.
Frances Sweeney The problem when she woke up was she thought that she was still racing. If you watch closely, you'll see that when she wakes up, she starts moving her front legs like she's running. If they had put her in a sling rather than laying her down on the floor, Ruffian may not have ended up injuring herself further. You also have to take into account the fact that horses are prey animals. In the wild, if a horse is laying on its side, it will be vulnerable to attack. If a horse is put under general anesthesia because they are hurt, then wake up to find themselves on the ground in a vulnerable position, the animal's first instinct is to get up so it can stay with the herd. When you add in the way Thoroughbreds are raised and trained to race, and how they love to run more than any other breed of horse, you get an animal that is most likely going to be scared and confused, a dangerous combination in any situation.
@@shelliewalker9704 and to follow up on your comments which are correct, if my memory serves it was Dr. William Reed from Elmont, NY and Dr. Jenny from New Bolton who designed the recovery pool and were funded by Alexander Mackay-Smith. Many horses have survived orthopedic surgery because of the development of the Recovery Pool.
She can’t meet champions because SHE IS THE CHAMPION. She only can meet racehorses that died but they are not better SHE IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE CHAMPION ♥️
I have heard people say she shouldn't have raced because she wouldn't have died. But it is part of Ruffian if she never ran she wouldn't be so special. Plus i truly believe that most racehorses including Ruffian enjoy their job!
@rideshorse05 Awesome me too, I'm hoping to get Ruffian and Seabiscuit and some other racehorses for Christmas, those race horses inspired me to become a jockey, even though I'll probably end up being to tall
so the horse.. who play her. actually snapped his...? or they just "fake" it to where they made it look real. i wanted to see the behind scenes but couldnt find it. i havent since the move in a long time.
Ruffian is a real race horse. The movie was a documentary about her racing life. So the injury she got was real. Also the RUclipsr made an error in saying his which was supposed to be she.
A little inaccuracy in the film, horses weren't put down with an injection in the 1970s. They were sedated and then shot with a bullet to the temple then 1 in the heart as a coup de Grace. Both shots coming from a high powered pistol. If performed correctly, then the RCVS approves of this as a humane method of euthanasia.

The horse who played her in the movie didn't acutally break there leg for the movie, it was just editing
@@silverstreakd5134 yeah tbere is no way a horse can break its leg on command
where did you get this footage??? Also this made me sad :'(
