Great work Mike! Great to see the old girl with a proper second chance! Thanks again for the great content, really enjoying the channel. Cheers from Australia.
Nice job Mike, changing a transmission on your own, with the car on the ground, i.e. not on a lift, is very much taking the hard road. I would say that, from what was shown on the video, you do need to replace the transmission mounts as those ones looked absolutely shot, very perished and bulged where they've lost their strength. Running the car with those will mean you get all sorts of strange vibrations and buzzes through the car. Also make sure you thoroughly check all the flex discs in the prop shaft/drive shaft as they do degrade over time and, if they fail when the car is at speed, the shaft will flail around and do all sorts of damage underneath and may even breach the floor of the car and cause horrific damage to the passengers. A lot of people do recommend replacing them any time you have the transmission out for peace of mind. It all looks good so far, hopefully the trans will have its full compliment of gears and that will be another job crossed of the list of bringing this autobahn stormer back to life. Of course, if the car is lacking in forward gears then you know that the original trans had all of them so it might be possible for a specialist to rob your old unit for any parts that the new one needs, though I have a sneaking suspicion that, judging by the date written in paint pen on the new torque converter, that the new unit has been gone through professionally so it should be good as new...
I wrangled a 3 speed gearbox out of a 57 Chevy and wrangled a 4 speed Borg Warner in, on the ground, in the dark with just a flashlight and some combination wrenches. That was in 71. Don't think I had jackstands either. That was fun! The hardest part was getting the Hurst shifter in. They sit on the tail so come up under the bench seat and dog leg forward. Ended up with a big hole in the floor. Ah, the foolish can do attitude of youth! Lol
You are the man! Just simple swap of transmission on the driveway ;). Make sure all vacuum and other small hoses/wires are connected. Those if loose can cause all kinds of funny (annoying) issues.
There a lot of videos on how fix things and forms but as you found not exactly like your Vechicle but point you in right direction . I had issue with different Vechicle and different issue but found at least how to by pass issue for the summer . It was a bad heater core .

The German engineers at Mercedes sure do have a [warped] sense of humor. Good thing we have you here to make sense of it all Mike. Now, take us on a cruise ... beyond your driveway.
On most, if not all, Mercedes cars, the driveshaft can be removed intact. I hope you aligned both halves to each other when reinstalling as per original alignment. If not, you probably have a driveline vibration.

Mike, I have two Mercedes, S550 4Matic, under warranty, and a 300 CE as you know. I found out I might need to get a battery and was a little shocked on the price. But my mechanic told me it might be the alternator not charging the battery correctly. What do you think? Thank you! Roger
Anyone can check the output of the alternator. Start the engine and check voltage at battery. You want more than 13 volts. If it’s less, then the alternator brushes are bad and they can be replaced. It’s it’s more, than the battery is dead. Any Autozone can check for you for free!
Monkey Wrench Mike Thank you, it’s obvious that I do no work on car engines. I have been very lucky with my cars. Having regular maintenance done keeps the fleet going strong. I've been having trouble with a 1986 560sec transmission not shifting into the next gear while driving down the road. Would I need to replace it? I've tried everything... HELP!!!
@@MonkeyWrenchMike thanks for the reply!! I have placed a new modulator and adjusted it a few quarter turns more than the old one to firm it.
