The first thing I thought was Cody reminds me of a mental health client I had a few years ago. He had schizophrenia and was on medication that helped with his delusions, but medication compliance is always an issue with these cases. And then mixing other drugs with anti-psychotics is a whole other issue. He also had a major cigarette addiction and would attack random people on the street and steal their cigarettes.
@@cynthiaadkins-zj9uti agree as a psych major and 10 years working with dual diagnosed adults. The way they speak to Cody is deplorable.i mean the only person who spoke to him is the guy with the body cam.
Also I don't believe in that suicide by cop , because that's just something cops say. There is no diagnosis in the dsm 5 for "suicide by cop".
The fact they knew Cody was on psych meds and they still acted like this.
Also his prior dwi the cops did not know before or during the incident.

A few years ago here in Seattle an Alaska Airlines baggage handler at SeaTac stole a plane and took it on a joyride around the Puget Sound area. He didn’t know how to land the plane and he even managed to do a barrel roll, which was impressive for someone who had no flight experience other than video games that had flight simulation. He crashed the plane into a lightly populated island off Puget Sound (Ketron Island). He was going through some mental health issues and a divorce if I recall correctly. It was a sad that he felt he had no choice but to end his life. SeaTac has since added extra security measures when planes are on the ground being worked on by ground crews. The tower did a great job trying to talk him down. His name was Richard Russell aka Sky King.

I got the feeling that he had been fantasizing for awhile about taking a plane for a joyride as a way to end his life. He sounded like he was so glad he made this decision, it was everything he wanted it to be and he’d never have to pay the consequences in a court. He sounded so calm and matter of fact.

This is unreal. I can't believe he got as far as he did. This a major security breach. This is way beyond the capabilities of the local law enforcement. In other words, they weren't trained for this!! Poor bastards.
I wouldn’t really consider this a “major breach.” It’s not like he was going anywhere, dude was high off his ass and ran into an open aircraft. He wasn’t going anywhere despite the panic he had “powered it on” which he definitely did not do.
It's literally a 6-hanger private airport. Anyone who wants to fly commercial has to go up to Minneapolis for a public airport. You can't have 18 TSA agents at every private airport in the country. He drove thru a gate...that's more to keep planes from getting out than people from getting in.
And if you notice it had wheel chalks, those big triangular rubber things in front and behind every wheel. So he would have really needed to do some crazy full power risky stuff if its even possible to drive over those from a dead stop.
I suppose pole barriers should be placed at the gates. They can be removed with a key when someone needs to use the gate, otherwise those things will legit stop a dump truck before anyone drives through them. Cheap too
Wisconsin cops mainly get trained for theft of dairy products and such. 🐮

The reason why they think the door can only be opened once is because its ran by the auxiliary hydraulic system and without that being turned on eventually the aux will no longer have enough pressure in the lines to open it. The APU or GPU would have to be running to turn on the auxiliary system because the battery wont have enough juice to run the aux pump. The door can still be opened manually but with no pressure in the system it will drop like a rock and damage a very expensive door plus risk of injury to whoever is opening it. The switch the guy is holding onto does not have to be held to keep the door open but holding the switch down will override the computer and take priority preventing Cody from using the door safety and door close switches inside of the cockpit. Also on the G5 they could open the baggage door and climb through it because theres an additional door that leads to the inside of the cabin. So they could've cornered him but my guess the ground staff isnt that familiar with the aircraft.
It’s probably more likely they were just so shocked by the sudden events that they weren’t really thinking straight about all the possible entry points

Just a couple observations…..
1) I think Cody is primarily a mental health issue. He may be on drugs but I think the main issue here is psychiatric
2) there was essentially 0 danger of him starting the aircraft and moving under its own power. He’d have to a) know how to start the APU, b) know how to start the engines and c) remove the wheel chocks.

Thank you for pointing that out! Substance abuse often stems from trauma/ptsd and/or mental illness. I’ve been sober from alcohol over 2 years now, and in my personal experience, I had all of the above lol.

Totally concur. Self medicating is on the rise due to stress on healthcare (in the UK) and lack of affordable access to it (US). I self medicated with codeine for anxiety for years without realising that's what I was doing.
Finally seen a doc and got diagnosed but taking that step can be an uphill battle in itself.

Oh Bruce, you just showed your age. They were filling stations when we were young. Now, they're Convenience Stores, every 10 miles, or every other block in town. Oh my, that took me back several decades. That's back when people would pull off the highway to relieve themselves, as filling stations were 50-60 miles apart. It was my duty in the car to whisper in my Dad's ear "Do we need gas yet Daddy?" A car with 3 little girls and Mom. My father had some odd time schedule for every trip. There upon discussing which roads were taken with the men upon reaching the destination 😂

Great video, very entertaining as well as a warning to not make such poor decisions. When your mental health is falling apart and/or you start using substances without getting help, you never know what the consequences will be. Goes to show nothing is out of the realm of possibility.

Everyone is soooo lucky he wasn't able to start those engines. Those engines are LOUD-- it's likely that everyone (including Cody because the door was open) would've been temporarily deaf from the sound.

You are talking about that young man that worked for the Airlines that stole a plane in Seattle, flew around, did some barrel rolls then flew the plane into the ground on that island. That was crazy!
I remember seeing the plane flying low around the Puget Sound right after it took off. The guy was experiencing some mental health issues. The control tower did their best to try to explain how to land the plane,but Richard aka Sky King had one goal in mind, to crash the plane in an uninhabited area. The fact he was able to complete a barrel roll and not lose consciousness is impressive for someone who had never flown a plane before. It was such a sad story.
I was hoping that the airline would offer him a job as a pilot in mid flight. that might of lifted his spirits enough for him to want to live. Very sad! @@LibraInSeattle
