The place you found water is a cattle guzzler.
The paved road you traveled on, is in fact an 233 mile long aquaduct that the city of Los Angeles uses to supply its water.
The red roads use red volcanic ash from some of the volcanoes in that part of the desert.

One of your best yet Ed. It's the struggle that is always the most interesting. Cycling across Mongolia I remember the fear/tension/excitement associated with the need for water. With easily accessible water it's really just about time and will power, with a lack of water it's ramped up another level. Leo watches all of the new videos and says Hi. He doesn't know it but will be getting a unicycle for Christmas - a 16" wheel. Hi from KL!

Bird Spring Pass, what I do Ed, is use Google Earth to look ahead at my bike routes to see at street view what roads look like so when I get to them I know if they are rough, paved or whatever type of dirt they are. I can also see what streams, creeks and other water sources look like. Topo maps do not always show true water areas, I have seen maps that showed a lake then to get there it is dried up. Course this was you first experience in the USA, I have been bicycle touring it for 37 1/2 years.

He was lucky to find that guzzler, there is not really any water sources around and that was probably 25 or 30 miles from Inyokern. Ironically that concrete road he was riding on is the Los Angeles Aqueduct, so there was water right beneath him at that point, but now way to access it.
