I'm feeling like the happiest person in the world since I got to know and also Invested started investing my bitcoins with Mr Gary's mining pool, he's really been helping me take care of myself and my kids.
Wow the youth of today is so lucky to have this content (and words of affirmation for some) accessible and free. Will be referencing this video anytime someone tries to shove their pencil pushing job on me while I’m earning less for now but creating and building for a better tomorrow. Thank you Garry Tan!
One of the main obstacles to my success has been dogma. Like Steve Jobs said, “Don’t live with the results of other people’s thinking.” It’s something I have had to fight constantly for by surrounding myself with like minded entrepreneurs. This channel is incredible, I can feel the Valley vibes already :).
2:11-3:28 is the biggest gem of the whole video, once you understand that creating value (building) is far better than signaling value (credentials) opportunities are limitless. It's just a matter of getting started, no matter how small
Garry, this might go unnoticed , but I really got shivers and got hooked at 9:25 where you look at the audience, have a more direct and intense tone which makes it so great because it feels sincere. Guessing this is the sort of feedback a creator wants to get.
I am Frontend Web Developer . I have been learning it for about 7 months and I have been applying for frontend jobs for a while now but I haven't been lucky. Taking Garry's advice I will continue learning and now I'll move on to the backend to become a full stack. Thanks for your advice Garry.
2 years ago this advice revalidated what I always wanted and changed my life... for 8 years I was watching, watching, watching and afraid to leave my coporate career... I quit, start from scratch to learn code, asked my friends to join, now we are building company, we have lunched, and lunched again... and moving towards my goals one step at the time... Thank you garry for this ❤❤❤❤
Hi Gary, we met during ASES Summit '17 at Stanford and at the end of the summit, your quote was the biggest learning for me "Either you're learning or earning, if both, that's the best, if neither, you need to move to another opportunity"!! Glad to see this learning and knowledge is being democratized and a lot of youth are benefitting from your insights :)
Garry, I cannot tell you how happy I feel when I listen to your videos. Quite a value addition for listeners. I love how you breakdown concepts into good structures
One of my favorite vids yet. Sounds like I left my first startup a bit too late, but I did learn a LOT for most of it. Without that learning (and suffering) I don't think I would have been kicked in the butt the same way to start my own business that actually worked. You live, you learn!!
Learning about yourself - first question in the row should be: who/what am I? Know thyself. Not in ego sense, but in being/essence sense. 🌸 All other questions are spot on!
Right! What a wonderful place would it be if people actually do what they're passionate about. What would you have done if you've seen this video before?
@@garrytan9352 I’ve gotta crazy idea I’ve been working on for 5 years, if you believe someone can build a revolutionary company- group without having spending single cent, Wanna here more?
This is essential advice not just for people in their jobs, but for entrepreneurs as well. I think about the years NASA existed before their first successful launch. It's nearly impossible to tackle a problem while anticipating everything before going in. It takes a necessary amount of assessment, evaluation and reflection to solve life's hardest challenges. Anything worth doing is hard!

Garry first of all super quality content, inspiring! I'd also like to add on the "Neither learning, nor earning" part, can happen to many founders/entrepreneurs too! (myself included). Especially when yes, your startup has an existing customer base, however growth is either slow or limited. Founders often can find themselves buried in non-stop routine work (customer service/ accounting/ marketing/ R&D, etc.) and often having a small team, you're stuck in the loop of not having time to learn better methods, as well as limited income growth.
I feel so grateful to have access to these great content from successful founders like Garry Tan, Justin Kan every week. All the best to you @Garry Tan.
I really needed to watch this video. I spent the past 4 years learning and building up some extremely valuable skills. Now I feel ready to make the leap and join something early stage and build it from 0 to 1. As someone going through the process of finding my next adventure, I find this series of videos extremely valuable and thought provoking. Thank you Garry!
As somebody who genuinely loves learning and went down a finance/economics/investing rabbit hole last year and can't stop, this is channel is absolutely amazing! Keep it up :)
Do the work and instill self-discipline or persistently eat the frog is the best advice I ever internalized... cold-calling is the greatest teacher of this.
This reminds me of what Steve Jobs shared, “ Always hungry, always foolish” and to have that drive/obsession on what one believes for themselves, not moved by noises that don’t add values. Great content! 🙏🏽
I happened to have a reflection about what you mean you love your work. True love is "tested" whether you can endure long hours but also willing to find time to get back on it naturally when difficulties happen especially when no one seems to have passion like you do. "Can you spend the 10,000 hours to become great?" is a good test indeed.
Great life and business experiences! I wish I had seen this video 20 years ago. Many of the experiences you shared I can absolutely relate with except I was missing the earn + learn combination. Thanks for the great stories and insights!
Thank you so much Garry for sharing your experience and wisdom. I stumbled upon your channel by accident and it's made my week. Needless to say I took notes as you spoke and got an inspiration to start up something. Thanks for being that catalyst.
I love the gradebook software thing. My first programs were to help my FFA advisor manage our fruit-sale fundraisers and for us to practice test-based competitions. Now I'm a Software Engineer at Amazon looking to start a company of my own.
What I appreciated most about this video is the underlying theme of initiative, which translates into being bold enough to start learning and prioritize it over simply earning-being brave enough to make those cold calls and reach out to strangers. Although it's scary, I've seen the most success when I've acted in such a manner, and it's a quality of some of the most successful people I know. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks Garry, I have a 100+ k job in a big corporation and it's exactly how've described it: hamster wheel. Have you tried setting up your own start-up while raising kids? I did, and I can tell you this is another level as compared to what you're describing (unless you want to "abandon" your children and not get involved at all). In the end it's a trade-off: safety of my family vs. building your own future as a company owner.
All the theories on happiness you shared are practically correct but not from first principle. The reason happiness comes from "discipline" is because happiness is merely the opposite emotion to frustration and sadness (which you will inevitably experience forcing yourself to learn something). Happiness only exists after you've done something difficult because it is not an absolute emotion but a relative one: you're happy for a period of time because you were frustrated for a period of time and vise versa. On a macro scale, it's always cycles of trying and trying (frustrated) -> succeeding (happy) -> feeling empty -> finding a new challenge to get frustrated about all over again. This also applies to the concept of "living" and "working". the concept of "living" only exists relative to "working". And in general, people associate working to be the generally frustrating experience and living to be the emotions opposite to frustration. The more frustrating it is at work, the more one would cherish "living" and resent "working". On the contrary, if you "love your work" you treat it more like living, and you blur the lines between living and working because to you, working is part of living. In the end, all this is saying is that living comfortably gives the same emotional sum as living a challenging one but has a much smaller amplitude (less ups and downs). However, the ultimate difference is that living a comfortable life results in less net change exerted onto the world. And remember, emotions don't stay, they will always balance with its relative emotion. But the changes you make to the world does. So always choose a challenging life, not a comfortable one. And always remember: creating frustration for yourself is the exact same thing as creating happiness, vise versa.
When you're young and first starting out, you can learn from any job even if it's considered "bs". There are still a lot of smart people to learn and teach you about any industry. It's also ok for people to work average, everyday jobs that still contribute to society and pay the bills to support their family and lifestyle. That being said, most jobs can be mastered within 2-3 years in my opinion and learning new things may require a job or career change.
Good morning from Asturias (Spain). We just found you a couple a weeks ago looking for financial independence...and we found you. Great videos and great spich... we are learning a lot from you. Thank you.
I agree 100%. As we move into the future I would also like to add you can either add to the algorithm/create value or be a consumer. Keep moving forward and give 100% of your soul to build and earn in this life to something you have a deep desire for. Remember nobody has life figured out, but what they do have is years of wisdom and personal experience that can help you along your journey. Peace and much love yal
Absolutely on point, as always Garry.. Your content is so relevant for most of us..In life's rat race where a lot of our lives are on autopilot, your thought provoking perspectives on steps to live life with a purpose are absolute gold dust.. Kudos man, keep up the amazing work 👍
I discovered David Graeber first through his viral Strike article on bullshit jobs and his ideas are amazing. I only found out he was part of the Occupy movement in America after his passing last year. His ideas will live on!
Garry, your content just resonates with me immensely, you convey information that I wish I had from people in my life. Although, I believe you need nothing outside of yourself to become successful, as long as you align yourself, the information, the lessons they will come to you. Garry, you don't know this yet but you are basically my CEO coach right now, and you are apart of my journey. Thank you!
I'm trapped earning money....I know it and its hard to break the cycle. I'm not learning at my job either, but I make good $$$. I'm not truly happy. I'm trying some other things that I really enjoy and looking for ways to earn. Glad I found your channel bro. Appreciate your content!! :)
I'm a PLC programmer. Been bugging the EE & MachE boys to teach me the skills to build rigs. I used update docs for a small manufactoring company while I was in college. I got paid minimum wage. Best thing I ever did was bug the EE guy to teach me how to program PLCs. We used to elope a lot. He'd take me out to the factory floor and teach me as much as he can. Long story short, don't be afraid to bug people in your workplace. Ask you manager how the business is going, what the targets are and how he plans to meet them, etc.
Amazing content. As a college student, where it seems like everyone around me wants to get a finance job and live a comfortable life, the hedonic treadmill theory really resonates.
I've put a ton of important quotes and lessons on my whole sheet pad just straight out from this video and I have to say thank you for the wisdom that you're bringing! You're shedding the light for what seems to be the future of companies where they'll start from scratch as well. I am an aspiring startup founder too though I'm still a teen haha and knowing that it won't be easy, but your content brings so much impact to where I want to delegate my future moves. Thank you, Garry!
Great video Garry! I have found it very inspiring. Love the quote from Tim Cook : "my journey was unpredictable. My advice is to be prepared" it really resonates with the uncertain times we live today
Thanks Garry for your sharing...For a guy who can spend all of his off-work hours on favor security analysis stuff and thinking about how to switch and build new career, your advice is really great and helpful. Wish I found your channel earlier. Appreciate your sharing! I am your new subscriber, all the way from South East Asia!
Thanks for the video, I just start started learning visual programming some weeks back and I'm close to building something that might be of value with some hard work. Yes, learning always enriches one.
Hey Great videos ! I feel like strucked by lightning and punched hard in the face after watched your video. I've been a coder for years, and my last recent journey was a builder, and what I built make an impact to the company into extensive growth and make revenue of million dollar sales. It was great learning, like 10,000 hours of doing it over. It has been five years now since then, I am in the top of position as Head of Software Engineer of small teams, but I am like running in a hedony treadmill like whats you've mentioned. I am earning decent money but I do not learn anymore as much as the initial stage. And by watching your video, I realized where I missed the thrift of building something out and see how the impact happened. And so happen I am now in middle of considering to make a jump and quit my job. Apparently the upcoming job where I will consider, is one of the startup backed by YC 😉 Really hope one day I could work with you and learn tons of things from you. Love to see more like this !!
11:58 >If you are not learning, yout don't have a way to earn equity or even a good salary AND ESPECIALLY IF IT'S NOT FUN OR MEANINGFUL FOR YOU, you gotta quit. This just gave me a huge relief that I left my previous job.
RUclips algorithm recommended your video to me abs I am so happy. I am watching all your videos with my daughter who is an aspiring engineer. While she has not decided her engineering stream yet, she is getting clarity with such videos. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Yes, have to learn all the time every year - especially, the way the world is trending with technology and how Internet marketing keeps changing. What you learn today will help you in the future, for sure, even if you don't currently see how it fits into the future puzzle... this is especially true w/ Internet marketing. Sometimes the learning process involves a lot of failures but the more failures you accrue over time - the closer you get to your ultimate goals. It can be a long, challenging process/path. Love the content. 👍
I can see both a sense gratification and fulfillment in the things you speak of. While you are learning and earning, you are also giving an unbelievable amount of value per your experience. I am only now beginning to open up my mind and grasp the potential of these concepts. I appreciate it and I know many others do as well. Thank you, Garry!!!
Thank you, Garry! I have been in a sad mood about my position for a long time. Previously I thought I lost interest in tech or felt too tired to be happy. I have tried all possible solutions I can think of to change that. Your video is a light for me to understand what I really like and want to do in the future. I LIKE CODING and I am just too tired of not learning!
Sir , I could not believe this content is for free. Sometimes there are some videos that really "impact". This is probably one of them. Thanks Garry , have a great week ahead.
I’m a one man IT department for my clients and I love it. I learn, it’s fun for me and I earn. 👍🏼 Love your videos thanks! There’s also a shortage of good network engineers / “IT people” if you are interested follow RUclipsrs and learn learn learn!
step 1 : "find what you enjoy doing" ok i wish it was that easy. personally, i have adapted mantra that the better i get at something the more i will like it which has been true. for most people "finding what you enjoy" is not so simple.
Hi Garry, may God Bless you for all these videos, Your content, production quality, the script, your camera, colour correction, the list won't end. I am on my own personal journey about being at a YC backed startup / RUclipsr and your videos are always a boost of eneergy and inspiration for me! Take care man
Funny thing is we have an annual Holiday celebration for all of my students (Govcon Giants) that we call, Earn or Learn. We just had this event last Tuesday. It is always a great time. I love hearing all the feedback for how they did this year.
Discovered this channel today and i just had to grab my notebook and take notes. Too much insight! Great quality content! Greetings from Nairobi, Kenya KE .
Thank you Garry for these awesome educational and motivational videos. My son is a coder and still in elementary. He watches your videos every time for inspiration :)
Very similar content to naval but I like it. Fund a startup that will pay (smart students in college) to dropout and learn coding/design. Like lambda but a larger scale. It might not be the most scalable/profitable/high margin, but it will be one of the most impactful in terms of intellectual capital.
I love the quality of the content on this channel. Garry Tan does 👏 not 👏 miss 👏!!!
Thanks so much, Nik!
Both of you have been my backbone of valuable knowledge while starting my brand! Thank you both!

So glad I found this channel. It's so rare for bright young minds to share their thoughts. Appreciate you 🙏
Super obsessed with your channel Garry! You’re a legend! Much love and God bless 🙏🏼

Thank you!
That camera quality and lightining... Impresses me everytime 😳
I'm a tech lead and I really enjoy learning from you. Simple and straight. Thanks

@@chunweng8559 sorry? Didn't understand
The advice from Garry Tan is something your parents, teachers, bosses, and pastors won't teach. Gold standard, love it.
Thank you for reminding the most treasure thing we have is time and don’t wast it for anything which we didn’t learn or earn. Thanks!
Your work makes you stand apart. Thanks for sharing ❤️🙏🙏

Send a customer to a founder and they will always take your email. So true.
It's really a shame to find your youtube channel late in the game, but still thankful! Thank you for being awesome
Apparently the upcoming job where I will consider, is one of the startup backed by YC 😉
Really hope one day I could work with you and learn tons of things from you. Love to see more like this !!

>If you are not learning, yout don't have a way to earn equity or even a good salary AND ESPECIALLY IF IT'S NOT FUN OR MEANINGFUL FOR YOU, you gotta quit.

I love his content, and the heart behind it. He’s brilliant, humble, generous and kind hearted. I found this piece inspiring and informative.
I am glad your channel is taking off. Well deserved
Dont know why RUclips recommended me your channel but its worth watching your channel
Always a breath of fresh air, Garry.
Everyone in the world should see this video. Profound, wise, and concise. Darn good work Garry!
Thank you! Very kind of you to say.

One of the greatest youtube videos .
I’m a one man IT department for my clients and I love it. I learn, it’s fun for me and I earn. 👍🏼 Love your videos thanks! There’s also a shortage of good network engineers / “IT people” if you are interested follow RUclipsrs and learn learn learn!
step 1 : "find what you enjoy doing"
ok i wish it was that easy. personally, i have adapted mantra that the better i get at something the more i will like it which has been true. for most people "finding what you enjoy" is not so simple.
Thanks Garry for this thought-provoking video! Always eager to watch a new weekly video!
Can't believe I just found this channel. Deeply appreciate the amount of great information you're sharing with us. Thanks!
Hi Garry, may God Bless you for all these videos, Your content, production quality, the script, your camera, colour correction, the list won't end.
Glad to hear it!
Alan watts & David graeber! I love your taste in references.

This channel is a goldmine. Thanks for all the insight you've shared on this video and others.
Very similar content to naval but I like it. Fund a startup that will pay (smart students in college) to dropout and learn coding/design. Like lambda but a larger scale. It might not be the most scalable/profitable/high margin, but it will be one of the most impactful in terms of intellectual capital.

Thank you Garry. Excellent Insights! I am a fan of Paul graham’s essays. The Paul graham quote you shared is spot on for this content.
This is really beautiful ! and golden for programmers !
