  • This large juniper squamata bonsai has many great features including the large size trunk, wonderful movement and lots of deadwood, shari and jin. The problem is the foliage which is prickly to touch, unattractive and has a lot of die back that does not make it very appealing to look at as a bonsai. My aim is to replace the foliage with shimpaku kishu foliage. I have already successfully approach grafted two shimpaku branches onto the tree, now I am trying to approach graft three more branches. Here I show you how I did it and some tips I have learnt on the previous attempts.

Two approach grafts have taken well and have removed the parent tree. I have three approach grafts added on last year and these are still needing more time to take.
