Only recently learned who he was but looking forward to checking out his books. Very interesting guy. Respectfully, I think he has a gigantic blind spot with respect to the whole idea of 'technocracy,' which actually seems like it is a necessary blind spot for any historian of such a distinguished rank.
Historians vs. technocrats is an interesting dichotomy which this podcast opens up. One person can only do so much in one lifetime. Excellence in any field of study requires studying something to greater and greater degrees of granularity. A historian who delves into the past with such rigor as Frank must - in order to do their job effectively - develop a blind spot for an *ANALYSIS OF **_PRESENT_** CONDITIONS WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF FINDING A RULE FOR ACTION OR PREDICTIVE VALUE,* which is technocracy in the pure sense. Technocrats, true technocrats, are *"PRESENT-ISTS."* It is therefore no surprise that to Frank all technocrats seem like nothing more than people with credentials from fancy schools. Chomsky has this line about if you're a human being frogs all look alike, but if you're a frog your differences with other frogs become life or death, and a similar principle seems to be at play here. Frank seems locked in to a view of technocrats here as venal Ivy-League careerists, which is grossly simplistic.
Yes, technocracy can be perverted by elite institutions co-opted by corporate socialism but it can also be employed to analyze present conditions with the same rigor that Frank analyzes historical conditions in order to improve *MATERIAL CONDITIONS,* which is the explicit objective of Andrew Yang's *HUMAN CENTERED CAPITALISM.*
Frank's (very understandable) failure to apprehend the nature of technocracy can be seen most starkly whenever he talks about COVID, which incidentally is where American technocracy has produced a vaccine in record time. He seems adamant that Trump did nothing about COVID when the opposite is true: Operation Warp Speed was a resounding success. Operation Warp Speed was the federal government's program to marshal the energies of the private sector towards the creation of a vaccine by creating an incentive structure out of essentially nothing. It was a monumental success of technocracy which Frank writes off completely. He also seems quite hostile to other technocrats in the FDA who approved the vaccine and their trustworthiness, though this impression is admittedly not based on very much information. It is difficult to see Frank's views on COVID as unrelated to his views on technocracy.

The populist Left must let go of its longstanding aversions to technocracy because Frank's premonitions about how this is all going to end up are shared by those of us in the Yang Gang with increasing urgency and foreboding. Biden could be really good or really bad. We don't know yet.

They also don't want you to see that it is YOUR government. Leave it to them, as if they own it. Anything they do would be some sort of charity that would have to come out of THEIR own pockets. Nope, letting you have some of your OWN money BACK to bridge through a tough time and stimulate the economy is in no way charity. It confuses them because they think that it BELONGS to the government, that it is theirs. That isn't what OUR representatives should be doing.

Professor Wolff is not only my favorite economist, but also my favorite living Marxist and favorite political commentator. And I'm saying that as a Marxist. Edit*: to your point of the Republicans conning the bible beaters, the Democrats did just that (as Frank explains in the book) but with "innovation" and "self-righteous virtue" to claim the upper middle class vote. One thread leads to another and I don't mean to bore you with the details in a single RUclips comment. But things of that nature refer to "professionals". Socialism doesn't just mean the government has control over things like we are led to believe from capitalist propaganda. Socialism means that the people have control over both their government and their workplace.
Why is this such a crucial aspect? Currently under Capitalism, who owns the government? Well, the big businesses and money interests of course. Buy off all politicians. Rig the system in your favor. That's the way all current capitalist societies operate.
Under socialism, government would actually be a Democracy because the system wouldnt be set up where there are class divisions. Everyone is a worker, everyone has equal say in their workplace, and from that, everyone has equal say in government. The key aspect our society is missing is WORKPLACE DEMOCRACY. The HC bill was Mitt's "buy insurance." No walking with unions, he didn't raise the minimum wage enough--worst of all he cut taxes on the wealthiest 2.2% and made some of Bush's tax cuts that were about to expire, permanent.

Precisely the praise and the supposed righteousness of Obama, the amount of people that will take the polished exterior and accept it, and then presume and condescend to those who disagree, to the other, the dumb voters that just don't know what's good for them.
When you combine that with actually refusing to address the darkest parts of the legacy he inherits it breeds even more resentment. This man was in the pockets of the banks, the military industrial complex, the big tech companies. Those who's interests are most diametrically opposed to those of working people. Obama's 8 years was minimal in overall policy compared to how long Hillary, Bill and Joe dominated Democratic corporate agendas as senators and then presidents (first ladies in Hillary's case). Granted he made some big mistakes, Barack is a unique case in a Democratic president, he thought being his community organizer roots would be enough to lead. Joseph Brindley although she did not go all out on ftv no one can deny she’s more willing to stand up to democrats in comparison to any member of the squad or elected progressive.

@@gny.sgt.hartman3740 She will cause nothing but headaches and problems in Congress for the democrats. She will ignite an even deepening rife between the democrats the way she's carrying on. The things she believes is good but the way she conducts her tone isn't good for the party if she's elected to Congress.

@@gunnyo50 Her tone? Jesus, people like you are the reason democrats will stay as corrupt as they always have been. You don't want a rift to expose the real difference between corporate democrats and "progressives"?

I think I know why Krystal signed on to do this podcast with Kyle. It was so that she could casually drop F-bombs when she's not filming Rising.

I was hoping for more cussing. I get tired of the soap mouth clean commentary from watching political news all the time. It was hilarious hearing Thomas go "is it ok to cuss here?" lol
