  • This is how we made a Barn Quilt with an International Harvester theme and then hung it up on the peak of Jay's Barn. This barn quilt tutorial is made using Medium Density Overlay (MDO) Plywood painted with Oil-based enamel like Rust-Oleum.
The techniques used to hang the barn are not the safest. Please use the correct equipment and personal protective equipment.
Here's a great book on barn quilts:

I was a bit nervous as you guys hung the quilt, but it looks so nice on the barn.

You said it was NPO wood? What thickness? What kind of paint did you use? Did you put a clear coat of paint on last?

Oh sorry, it's MDO plywood. Medium Density Overlay. I used 1/2". The paint is oil- based enamel, like Rust-Oleum which holds up well in the elements. I did not use a clear coat on it but that would not be a bad idea to do so. It's been up on the barn for two years now and seems to be holding up well. Thanks so much for watching.

Have you used plywood since MDO is hard to get? If did you have success with it.

What paint did you use? Did you seal it after painting with Spar varnish or polyurethane?

I used Rust-Oleum Farm Equipment paint for the International Red and then regular Rust-Oleum enamel for the black and white which holds up well to the weather. I didn't seal it with anything else. You could probably use acrylics and then seal with a clear coat too. Thanks for watching.

I love this and would love to make it for a Father's Day gift! How did you tape it off? Is there a guide I can find online? Maybe it just looks more complicated than it really is. :)

Hi Katy, the layout is based off of a square foot grid. The overall size is 4'x4' so if you break that down into one foot squares it makes it easier. If I remember correctly, I messed around with the IH letters for awhile to get the right looking dimensions. Good luck with your project!

I primed, used the green frog tape and 3 coats of exterior paint... When pulling off the tape it lifted the paint any idea of what I am doing wrong?

Here's a few things to consider:
      1) Make sure the paint is completely dry before taping
      2) I used Rust-Oleum paint which is an enamel, maybe that holds up to the tape better.
      3) When pulling the tape off, pull it back 180 degrees on itself (straight back).
      I hope that helps.
