If you are in the USA please "GET THE RENTAL INSURANCE INSURANCE IF YOU ARE OUT OF TOWN AND WILL NEED A CAR AFTER A ACCIDENT. You will be fully covered under the car rental company. They will pick up the damaged car and put you in another rental. Other insurance from your company, credit card, etc. You will have to wait for the claim to process and complete.(when they receive payment) They will not give you another car until then. By then your vacation will be over and you will be stranded without a car.
Thanks for this video, some very good tips here. I’ve purchased 2x excess insurance for two separate hires in May & June in Europe. First one with Avis states ‘CDW/LDW’ optional and second one with Sixt states ‘third party included’. My excess insurance does not cover CDW/LDW so unsure where I stand now on my excess policies?
Hi Ian, are you from the States or UK? We’re lucky in the UK - and buy through a UK website - you’ll normally have CDW as standard and quite often more. I just booked a car for later this month and it had all of the insurances I needed, included. It gets trickier for us if you buy directly from a US website. That’s when I knew I needed to add extra excess. With the ones you’ve bought, if it doesn’t include CDW, that’s ok because you usually get that with your car rental, so claim through them. It’s for all of the other scenarios you’d claim from the other one.
do I have to pay the deposit if I'm under 25 at the rental, because when I went to Spain I had to pay 600 euros and they refunded it to me a week later from when I returned the car? i have axa car insurance excess cover. will that mean I don't have to pay them anything?
Hi Yasir, most companies will put a charge on your credit card for the deposit, which you then get back when your return the car. I’ve had some which take the money and some which have it as “pending” so it’s not taken. With a big-name company, you should be safe in getting it back!
Unfortunately, I don't think any companies will take cash or checks these days. Could you get a credit card JUST for renting a car? You could then hide it away until your next trip? If you phone up the company, they can confirm whether they would accept anything else.

Hi Lisa, great advice!! Do you have “replacement car” insurance on your plans in the US that would cover it?

Actually, Avis says included is ‘damage cover’

Can I do car hire insurance on my own personal car?
If you're in the USA, I think you can. We can't do it in the UK, though.

I don't want or use a credit card so how do I pay excess insurance if the company requests a credit card?
