    A friend of mine knew Ringo from before he joined the Beatles and was around when he did join them in August 1962.
    He said that the truth about Pete being replaced was pretty much what Paul's quoted as saying here. Ringo was a much better drummer,, but so were others in Liverpool so that was part of it, but the main reason was that Ringo's personality fitted perfectly with the others - Paul John and Ringo were like three perfectly fitting pieces of a four piece jigsaw puzzle and Ringo completed it 100% perfectly - the four shared the same general attitudes to life, the same silly sense of humour, even a secret language, and, most importantly, they were all equally determined to succeed. Look how they all improved as musicians - compare Ringo's drumming on, for example, Love Me Do, with his amazing work on songs like Ticket To Ride, Rain and Tomorrow Never Knows within about three years.
    So the change turned out to be fully justified by the astounding way they ALL developed as musicians as the years went by.

    I just heard some BBC recordings and thought the drums didn’t sound very tight, it turned out it was Pete playing. There’s a subtle difference between someone who is natural at doing something and someone who’s trying to do something. A lot of bands in America in the 60’s used session players in the studio players, George Martin had hired a session drummer named Andy White, that the Beatles could do whatever for performances, but for recording Pete wasn’t good enough. The Beatles had jammed with Ringo and had noticed the difference when Ringo played with them, and perhaps when Bert Kaempfert and George Martin commented that Pete wasn’t quite good enough that was the final straw. I’m glad that Pete has made some serious retirement money from the Anthology project. I think George Harrison was right in his assessment that Ringo was the fourth Beatle, just hadn’t shown up yet! The Beatles catalog and band dynamic wouldn’t have been the same without Ringo!

    • @martinodoni8943
      @martinodoni8943 6 месяцев назад +2

      All of this is true, but it must be noted that Ringo made a complete hash of his first two attempts at doing a studio recording, and so George Martin insisted on going with Andy White anyway.
      Ringo was a more flexible and sophisticated drummer than Pete Best, but that does not necessarily mean "better." In the end, I think the main reason for switching to Ringo was just that the other three got along with him better than they did with Pete. And heaven knows, even then the terrible fights and rows that would follow within the band over the next few years showed that to be a pretty thin reason.

He said he never asked them to replace best. That was that. Pete best just didn't fit in. He didn't have the charisma. He did not bond with the other band members. And let's face it who wrote all the songs it made the Beatles the Beatles. It wasn't best. When they broke up he went public saying that he was replaced because they were jealous. Look at the Beatles. it had absolutely nothing to do with Pete best looks. If he was so good looking that they had to replace him why didn't his looks take him to the top and surpass the Beatles afterwards? He's embarrassed himself over the years which I'm so sorry to say it is sad. Everyone felt bad for him and he started spewing off some of this BS. He had the right to have his feelings hurt. But it was Paul by the way who reached out to give him those royalties. You guys really need to get your facts straight. That’s right Aspinal has stated over and over that Paul has thrown truth, or at least best rememberence, in the trash as he retro histories eveything, aggrandizing himself at every turn. He FOR SURE never “ reached out” to Pete at any time. The truly crappy thing about replacing Pete was the timing, Pete paid his dues in Hamburg and after they should have replaced him BEFORE they got their record deal if he was so shabby. Giving Pete the boot at the very moment the band started really happening was the worst possible timing.
      Paul alone is worth over a BILLION dollars he could lay 10 million on Pete on behalf of the original three and never even notice it missing but he doesn’t. Giving Pete a couple mill’s for Anthology is only fair he’s entitled to royalties on those original recordings again they are only looking out for themselves if they didn’t work out royalty terms ahead of time and gotten Pete to sign off they would have been sued after Anthology came out and most likely paid far more.

      Most fans don't know the history behind the EMI recording of LOVE ME DO, but the arrangement was changed on the very day they recorded it with Pete Best, giving all of them problems. Initially, George Martin wasn't even there. The Beatles played, "Love Me Do", among 3 other songs. The engineers liked them so much they sent for Martin to come hear them. Martin listened to, "Love Me Do", and abruptly changed the arrangement, ditching the skip-beat that Pete had been playing the song with all along in the clubs. This threw Pete off, and it also threw off Paul's vocals (it's easy to hear). Engineer, Norman Smith, who worked the session said, "The problem wasn't with how Pete was playing, but rather with the new arrangement he was being told to play." I like RINGO, but we must remember the truth as Beatles fans. George Martin never said, Pete must be replaced in the band. George Martin never even said Pete would never record with the band, he simply stated that he wanted to use a session drummer for the first recording session (very commonplace).

My school had a fife & drum corp band, I went to sign up to be a drummer, but because of Ringo there was Zero room for more wannabe drummers, too bad! Pete Best has a perverse memory of History. George Martin found Pete best drumming substandard. Paul and John already knew repeat could only do rudimentary things and many times couldn't hold the beat. When Martin suggested replacing him the other Beatles already knew who they wanted, Ringo who they were a fan of and worked with in Germany. Best lost his job because he just wasn't good enough.

    I’ve heard Pete play .. he’s ok, but was sadly never going to cut it as a Beatles drummer. Ringo’s left hand drumming real suited the Beatles sound, even though non musical fans didn’t realize his left handed rolls added to the sound of the Beatles, I believe Ringo was the perfect drummer for the Beatles.

    It's unfortunate getting booted out of the biggest group of all time. I know Ringo has his critics but he was THE perfect drummer for the Beatles. You have to remember...THEY asked him to join, he didn't come looking for a job. He made them a better group musically and his personality fit in perfectly. The Anthology recordings prove how weak Best's drumming was. He wasn't a good time keeper and every band HAS to have a good time keeper. Best was brought on because they needed a drummer to do those gigs in Hamburg.

The title of the book had the word 'theory' in it and at first I instantly assumed it was a book about music theory, but then I saw the book's subtitle said something about "social change", nothing to do with music or the topic being discussed at all. 😂 Just a senseless shout out to social change in the middle of a part of the video about Best needing drumming lessons. Before Ringo Starr became The Beatles' drummer, he had already established a strong friendship with the band members. After performances in Hamburg, Pete would often isolate himself, while John, Paul, and George would spend time with Ringo. This camaraderie extended beyond the stage, creating a natural bond between Ringo and the other three Beatles. When the time came to replace Pete Best, Ringo was the band's clear and immediate choice. The Beatles had long felt that Ringo was a better fit, both musically and personally. Their decision was further solidified by their experiences of Ringo filling in for Pete on occasions, which demonstrated the immediate chemistry and improvement in the band's overall sound.

      Most legitimate complaints don't say he's a crap drummer, they say he's barely average. His meter is inconsistent. He can only play straight time (4/4) he doesn't swing and there isn't a solid pocket. I have no doubt he's a nice guy, but having been that close to have being one of the most famous people in the world has to have left some mark on his psyche.

    Simply, the Beatles would not have achieved anywhere near their astonishing success had Pete remained in the band. Ringo was the final, necessary ingredient, personality-wise (drum-wise, too). As George said "History shows Ringo WAS the member of the band..." After the Beatles, Pete could not, and did not, achieve ANY degree of success - despite his once-direct connection/association with the Beatles.

    • @andrewfurst5711
      @andrewfurst5711 6 месяцев назад +1

      I agree completely. The Beatles sounded like a different band once Ringo replaced Best, a much better band. Ringo's drumming added an excitement to the sound, punctuation for the vocal phrasing, etc. Best gave them a muddy, plodding sound, in my opinion.
      We'll never know where an alternate reality would take us, but there's a good case to be made that Pete is better off that he got fired. Imagine The Beatles keeping Pete and going nowhere as a band. Instead, they got Ringo and took off, and as a result Pete became a millionaire simply by having been the fired drummer of a couple pre-fame years. Although I can understand his ego being hurt, monetarily and fame-wise Pete is likely much better off for having been fired by The Beatles.

  • @carlosvelasquez9922
    @carlosvelasquez9922 6 месяцев назад +2

    They got Pete because he was the only one available with his own drum set so he played with the band for over a year. What motivated them to kick him out was that George Martin told them Pete wasn't good enough for recording, I think that's when they saw the opportunity to kick him out because obviously they didn't like him as a person, Ringo was a better fit because of his personality, but Both Ringo and Pete weren't professional drummers , both weren't good . But after all it didn't matter what drummer, John, George and Paul were the Real musicians .

    The REAL reason this all transpired was that Mona became a real pain to Epstein, calling him 3X a day, bugging him to promote Pete, and still exercising some control over bookings, such as the Cavern. Best was an equal partner in the Beatles, having signed such a deal just months before. Epstein took the opportunity of the rest of the boys various complaints, to rid himself both of Pete AND Mona. Pete could have then and there voided his firing, but he didn't know his legal rights at the time with the shock of it all. By the time he regained his " balance" weeks later, it was too late, plus he received the wrong legal advice at the time.

    If The Beatle had only been a one hit wonder band (with Pete having been kicked out before their one hit), no one would be saying a thing about Pete getting kicked out. It's only because The Beatles were so successful that this is even talked about. People come and go from bands, all the time, and generally nobody makes nearly the big deal out of those situations, as they do out of this one. How many people entered and exited Benny Goodman's band ? Probably lots, but no one makes a big deal about that, nor even knows about it (for the most part.) Pete's personality was a "steady as she goes" personality, and the others were more agressive, and more extroverted. Pete is a very nice chap (I've met him and talked with him a bit, and he is just like he appears on the talk shows.) But, being a nice chap didn't work in his favor. He probably was content with his looks, the girls paying attention to him, and his drumming. He probably saw no reason to change the recipe. That is where he was different from the others, and that is what ended his career as a Beatle. "Steady as she goes" wasn't the de facto mantra of The Beatles. In reality he was just one of thousands of guys that came and went, as members of rock bands. (PS: Pete's low key, friendly, nice personality has probably served him well in life. He had the patience to be a trainer, which is a form of teaching. I'll bet that he was good at that, and was well liked. He's probably an excellent father, too. Compare that with John and Julian. So, Pete did all right in life. He was an average schmoe, just like lots of us. He did alright.)
