Rothenburg is definitely worth paying a little extra to see. It is one of our favorite places that we have seen... so far... in Germany. I am ready to go back now! And, I learned something new again from your video.... Silent Disco. Who knew there was such a thing?

what many ppl dont know:
rothenburg isnt exactly an old medieval town. it`s a reconstruction in large parts, because US Bombers destroyed it 8 days before the war ended.
at least, many americans donnated for the reconstructions because they were somehow shocked when they realised what they have bombed.

Yeah we weren't able to cover that part very well in the video. But as I understand it, much of the old town was saved.

German soldiers then decided to give up the town.
Schade, aber Krieg ist, war und bleibt immer schrecklich und auch das Zivilleben den Kollateralschaden nicht verschont bleibt. Es war auch Weltkrieg der schlimmste Konflikt in der Menschheitsgeschichte!😪😪😪 mit 50-80x Mio. NUR die Toten🩸🩸🩸. Zerstörte Städte kann man wieder aufbauen, Leib & Leben nicht!!

Went to Rotenberg a lot in the 70's. We were stationed in Nuremberg. Try the Nurnburger brats.

You have to remeber that every city that had industry was bombed to ruins in ww2, The only city i know of that decided to kind of rebiuld in the old style is Nürnberg/Nuremberg. If you want to have a fairytale experience go to the mosel/Middle-Rhine area. many castles and vineyards etc. From there you can make day trips to citys for museums etc.
Some Museums i can recommned and personally visited are:
- Miniatur wunderland (Hamburg)
- Deutsches Museum (Munich)
- Mercedes-Benz and Porsche Museum (Stuttgart)
- Museum Island (Berlin)
- Zeche Zollverein (Essen)
- Technik-Museum Sinsheim (Sinsheim)
Berlin is in my eyes like Bavaria not a part of Germany :D
I don't like Berlin, dirty and nasty
But you definitely should give Germany a second chance ;)

@@gerdipediaTV Stimmt, die beiden Videomacher geben sch ja auch sonst viel Mühe. Aber es sind eben Amerikaner. Viele amerikanische Touristen an diesen Orten wissen kaum etwas darüber oder wo sie überhaupt genau sind. Ich wohne 20 km von Heidelberg, da ist es auch so.
Mein Vater war aus dem Taubertal, deswegen kenne ich es gut.

Meine Amerikanischen Freunde sagen immer sie sind schon recht beeindruckt wie gut und flächendeckend wir Deutschen Englisch sprechen und überhaupt viel mehr Ahnung von der Welt haben. Da muss man halt den armen Amerikanern einiges verzeihen können wenn man mal bedenkt was die für ein miserables Bildungssystem dort haben.

I was with my class there for many years it is also as a German very beautyful
That tiny door in the main gate door was a precaution. If someone who was important enough came to the gates at night when the gates were closed but they desired entry, the night guards could watch from the top of the wall who was outside. Then, when you spoke to the late arrivals through the closed doorway, you only opened that tiny door.
The door was not opened very wide, so the opening was fairly small. The guard usually stood on the inside behind the door far enough outside an angle at which he could not be shot with a crossbow or bows and arrows.
Anyone trying to rush through that doorway would be severely hindered as they would first bump their heads on the low rounded frame, or on the VERY high inner step. Either you poke your head through first, bending your body nearly double, then somehow drag your body and your legs through while holding onto the frame with both hands to keep you from falling over. Or you would step through with one leg, then lean back very far, also holding onto the frame with both hands. Diving through the doorway also was not practical as the door did not open far enough for that.
In either case you couldn't hold any signficiant weapon in your hands while passing through that tiny door, at best a dagger or a knife. But the night guards were usually armored, so a knife or a dagger would be pretty useless. A sword would be far too long and unwieldy to get through that doorway, dito spears or other polearms. The nightguards at the gates usually were paired in at least two man teams. So, breaking through that door and opening the gates at night in a secret attempt to open the main gates and storm the city was pretty difficult.
I personally stepped through that doorway on a guided night tour. I can tell you it is hellishly efficient at keeping the number of people stepping through it in a short time very, very low. Thus, even with only two or three guards on the inside enough noise could be made to prevent an attempt to breach the gates and storm the city.

Loved everything about this one! What a PRETTY town. And so Interesting! I think this is one of the towns that Flying The Nest went to on their "Fairy Tale Road" road trip, which is Totally something you guys should do next time you go to Germany if you haven't already. Seemed like such an AWESOME road trip (and it would give you more time in some of these really pretty Bavarian towns) =D

You two are doing a real good job. I live 25 km from Rothenburg, go there often , doctor, dentist, ....I have to admit that you explained many things, and you only stayed there a few hours. You had the dark beer, the Schneeball ( i would never hit it) Käthe Wolfahrt, ..
Another idea if you are having more time, they have a real " Irion maiden" from Nürnberg in the Kriminalmuseum.

Hiya. One of your best travel vlogs EVER. 99% full and varied content and 1% food and drink. You covered the cruise, the area, the tour or excursion, the history and sights of Rothenburg, etc., etc., etc., and, oh yes, here're a few shots of what we ate and drank without dissection and in-depth analysis. Marvellous! Didn't get bored or drift off once. I know the next one's food and drink, but, as you say, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE. Not a problem and I do look forward to it. All the best to you.

my husband and i visited rotherburg ob der tauber abt 8 yrs ago and totally fell in love with that small, quaint town... we did the night walk with the night watcher too! soooo cool!
Looks great there. I lived in Germany as a kid for a few years. Great vid as always but just wanted to point out for any future travellers that 'wurst' is sausage, 'bratwurst ' is a very specific (and very delicious) type of sausage (great with 'zenf ' - a very mild German mustard). Keep up the good work.

If you think German mustard is very mild, then try the ones you get in Scandinavia. They sell it in huge bottles there... And you won’t get hot mustard there like here in Germany.
Eating Bratwurst was definitely the right thing to do! We have the best ones in Germany! (I live in Ansbach the next major city near Rothenburg 30 km away on the romantic street, capital of Middle-Franconia). My favorite spot in Rothenburg is the Criminal-Museum. Full of mideval torture instruments. Really scary. 😉 Love you enjoyed our little part of the world!

The Holy Roman emperor didn't have a fixed seat of power. Neither did many other medieval monarchs. Instead it was customary to travel around and spend some time in various areas. Part of that was showing his presence to his vassals, which made them more loyal. Part of it was discharging certain duties like acting as a judge or settling local disputes.
He did have certain places he liked to stay in though, so some castles were built up to accommodate him when he visited.

A very interesting tour, thanks for that. Like Josh I'm quite tall (6' 2") and I'm always banging my head when I'm in buildings that are several hundred years old. In my teens I lived in a house that was built around the time of the English Civil War (1640's), and I always had to duck to walk through doors :D

Very nice Video...Rothenburg ist beautiful..... I am living in one of the most underrated cities in Germany with, unfortunately, not a rood reputation. But this is so, because people do have too much prejudices and say things although they was never here. My city is called Duisburg an is, in fact, older than Rothenburg. In 883 Duisburg was attacked by the vikings. There are a lot of traces from the Romans and the Franks. The very famous Gerhard Mercator lived here, who made an important world map for seafaring in the 16th century. And last but not least, Duisburg has the largest inland port in the world and it is calld as a seaport, too. So Duisburg is famous for its industry...for coal and steel and now Duisburg is in the middle of a so called "structure changing". It is an important or the most important location for transport goods to all locations to Germany...and there is really a direct train line to China. The Lower Rhine are is extreme different to the southern parts of Germany. Not many knows that Duisburg has one of the largest city forests in Germany after Berlin and Hannover.... So, Duisburg has a lot of indsutry but a lot of green parts and a very interesting history......So, if you have time - visit Duisburg !!!!

Actually you can still buy a nameplate stone for the city wall. You get it for €1200. The money goes to the Association for Preservation of Historical Buildings in Rothenburg.

Researching how the US military negotiated with the German garrison to avoid destroying the town in 1945 is worth a look.
Did they? After bombing the town on 31st March 1945?
@@Mostrichkugel Well yes apparently, but this was after the bombing. It was the artillery bombardment which was halted. However you only read what is available and it could be fake news. Similarly there is urban myth that the German and British authorities agreed via third parties not to bomb Heidelberg if Oxford was spared also. Who knows after 75 years?

About Heidelberg, there are several theories about it being spared. I live only 20 km from there, and as I child I was told it had been spared because many high-ranking American officers had visited Heidelberg before the war and they knew how beautiful it was, so they decided not to raid it.
Another is that it is due to the influence of Americans having studied at Heidelberg University. Yet another is that they intended to make it a hospital site for allied soldiers after the war.
There is a movie from 1949 called "I was a male war bride" with Cary Grant and Ann Sheridan which was shot around Heidelberg. It is great to see those places in the movie.
@@Mostrichkugel Also, Heidelberg had no significant industry in the surrounding area. However, Mannheim, which is about 20 km away, had all kinds of factories and strategic targets for bombing. Heidelberg was spared and Mannheim was flattened. On the Königstuhl mountain in Heidelberg, on a clear day, you can easily see Mannheim. I lived in H-Berg for 3 1/2 years. Loved it.
@@cogman62 My mother's family lived in Mannheim. My mother saw all the bombings and her life was saved by the bunkers that had been built by a very foreseeing administration. Eventually she left the city in 1943 in the Kinderlandverschickung-Project. My grandfather was in Berlin at the time,
and It took over one year after the war that the whole family was united again.
