Found a Free Aluminum 5.3 LS Block - Can It Be Salvaged?

Hey fellas. I was driving around and found an aluminum LS block and after bringing it home....it looks nearly salvageable. What do you guys think?

It's a definitely a gen 4 so it will be a LH6, LH8, LH9 or LC9. Since it has mounting bolt locations for a starter, we know it is not a FWD LS4 motor. You have a good find there. At worst, you may need to re-sleeve it if the bores are damaged or too far gone but given that it was free, it would be worthwhile. You could go to a wrecking yard and pull an iron block gen 4 motor and transfer the rotating assembly and heads. Then toss on a turbo and decent cam for a 1200 hp capable motor. Congrats on your find.

I think that is worth a trip and inspection fee at the machine shop. The case doesn’t look terrible at all. Next vehicles heart. Build a rowdy light weight 600 hp tire fryer! Roll cage and helmet kind of fun.

From the looks of the thickness of cylinder sleeves and lack of piston squirters…..it could be a gen4 5.3 possibly a gen3. I know it’s not the gen5 tho. Those have piston squirters and sleeves are considerably thinner.

get that thing sniffed for cracks and leaks at a machine shop asap.
You'd be out a few bucks and could end up with a nice block for a project motor!

Those LS engines are garbage buddy it's not worth fixing. It's probly stolen.
