    I love that we’re going to keep using Ed Harris on this channel.
    FIGHT!!!
    There’s nothing extreme about standing up for art and freedom of expression.
    The nannying and hand wringing, the virtue signaling and outright censorship…. It’s the NUMBER ONE reason I started building my physical media collection a few years ago.
    One day you’ll start talking about a film you love and say to your friends “Hey let’s watch it” and that’s when you’ll discover that putting all your entertainment needs in the hands of corrupt media platforms was a terrible idea.
    Fight evil,
    own your memories.

    Honestly, I think streaming is basically like how Blockbuster used to be: you don’t own it, you rent it. You may watch it many times as you want in streaming, but you won’t own it forever unless you keep paying a monthly fee. No thanks, I’ll buy my 4k HD Blu-ray of Super Mario Bros tyvm!
    Same thing for video games, gamer here so I understand these sentiments

    I can’t stop myself from ordering at least one dvd or blu-ray every day
    14:00 - 14:45 you absolutely nailed it. It’s a special event to unpack and watch something that I bought and supported myself. I feel connected with the films when I put them on my shelf and I know I’ll be going back to watch them again, and I’ll always have a variety of films in front of me that I feel connected to. I’ll always be able to find something that I know I’ll enjoy. My movie collection is at over 200 and growing and my love of cinema continues to grow as well.

    Y’all shared some great insights!
    I see how physical media will be evolving, but I’ll support & enjoy it as long as possible. I’m a fan of physical media because of the element of nostalgia, the multi-sensory experience, the privacy, and the better way to divest myself from corporate manipulation (data mining and advertising). Streaming and digital media was created for consumption but physical media is entertainment and an art form.

    Another virtue of physical media is version control. I remember when longer cuts of films like Amadeus, The Exorcist, Apocalypse Now (and too many more) were released to replace the original versions which meant that anyone who wanted those (and, really, most people I know who love films like these prefer the theatrical cuts) had to go foraging second hand or overseas. I had a big cull of my DVDs in the early 2010s and regret selling or giving away titles that were replaced with changelings. Now and then a 4K might appear with a choice of presentation but you really have to wait for that and make executive decisions on whether to hold your breath. I've repurchased some of these films on DVD with a kind of Farenheit 451 mentality (hey, let's bring that out as a posthumous "director's cut" with an added 55 minutes of CGI!). Great video, guys. We need people saying these things.

    You guys are definitely the best RUclips channel for physical media. I have spent thousands on 4K discs in the past couple years and with all the great stuff coming out I don’t see it slowing down! I recently discovered that you can find a lot of great discs on non-US Amazon sites for stuff that was either never released here or sold out quickly. Great video, keep up the good work! 🍻

    I'm locking in a tight collection of around 200 films and a few shows, mostly on OOP Bluray for all the bonus features. Only add 4k versions when the price is right for the fidelity jump. Using my knowledge of rare titles pickups to fund it.

    If anyone hasn't made the jump to 4k yet, they will. Non 4k tvs are probably only at goodwill or a yard sale at this point. Your HD Tv won't last forever and 4k tvs are much more affordable. Of course the quality of your tv and 4k player matter, but that's a story for anothet video 🤙

    Great video! I think another big issue that could've been addressed is the lack of 4K BR players out there. I don't think there's gonna be another console generation with a disc reader as a feature and we are still using Panasonic and Sony players back from 2018. If there were other options the cheaper they would get, as well as much needed improvements in stability and features could exist, thus making the adoption of the physical media format at least something a little more of a weird hobby for boomers.

    • @russceasetheruss5360
      @russceasetheruss5360 5 месяцев назад +2

      That is an excellent point... Last year, mine died on me and even on Amazon there weren't many options. Couple that with drive issue as you say, and you're right, not exactly convenient.
      Hopefully with Sony acquiring Disney's catalog we'll see a slight uptick, since Sony manufactures players.

  • @loftlegacy
    @loftlegacy 5 месяцев назад +3

    The thing which annoys me and many other collectors is the lack of certain titles that would sell HUGE. These are namely the original unaltered Star Wars trilogy, but mainly the Bond classics. They were archived by Lowry Digital in 4k nearly 20 years ago, but still not 4K UHD blu ray release. Sadly the versions allegedly on "UHD" streaming come well short. I used the Bond 2022 cinema rereleases which I saw at a Sony 4K certified cinema as my reference and the streaming "UHD" were not up to par compared to the cinema. There's a large demand for these on physical and it's online Eon to want to squeeze a few more dollars out of us.

If I had more money I'd own every movie and show, but after about 6 months I have around 45 movies and shows and I'm so happy with the ownership and the quality of physical media, we've come a long way since the VCR DVD 480p CRT TV setup we had when I was young lol

    I'm feeling physical media sales are still gonna be strong.
    The problem im seeing is in the process of it being sold to a niche market, more and more releases are being sold in a limited format. Specifically steelbooks.
    Disney and Sony especially have been going hard with limited edition steelbook-ONLY releases. No standard. So once those steelbooks sell out, that's pretty much it. Only other choice beyond that is the secondhand market.
