But not all memory compression is the same. GPUs also have been using ram compression for a long time and the compression has been getting progressively better over time
Went to the Apple Store, asked for a MacBook Pro. "That'll be $7100." they say. I put a bunch of 36 tightly wrapped hundred-dollar bills on the counter: "There you are, unified compressed $3600, as good as $7200, and keep the rest as a tip" I said. Well, I got out just before security arrived.
It's a shame that even IF it were true, you can buy around 96gb of ram for the price Apple charges for 8gb (+$200). Let me know when they are 12 times as efficient with their memory and we'll talk.
As of 2023, 16GB is the minimum decent amount of RAM. It is *shameful* that Apple is still releasing new MacBook models with only 8GB of RAM, which is insufficient for many users’ needs, and charging a premium price for the decent 16GB. This practice is not only unfair to customers, but it also shows a lack of respect for their intelligence and needs.
I would argue 8GB is fine. I'm still using a 4.5 year old laptop without any issues for my purposes and I use it daily. The issue isn't that 8GB is an option. The issue is Apples terrible response to valid concerns and their refusal yo be straight forward and honest. Not to mention the price is absurd for the 8GB spec.

@@dblevins343 you argue that 8gb is "fine" because you don't understand how OSes or processors work. If you have a super fast processor, and fail to feed it fast enough, you are basically underutilizing it. Your processor will constantly be waiting for something to do. Also 8gb when you have a hi res screen that is going to suck up much of that RAM is a recipe for disaster. No way 8gb is in any way acceptable. You might as well just buy an Intel Celeron. No need for an M3 because you can't feed it fast enough anyway.
@acasualviewer5861 I think you might be surprised. 8GB can still work great. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely underspec compared to the other components in this build. It would be a huge bottle neck depending on what you're doing with the computer. But it still depends. As dumb as it is, the vast majority of people I know who own Macs never actually use them for anything intensive. For the average user, 8GB is fine. If they're trying to do things that actually require good specs, the 8GB will 100% show its head as the weak spot. My laptop is still running Windows great to this day. I have a Surface Book 2 back from 2018-2019. It still has a high resolution screen. Don't get me wrong, if I pull up practically any game on my laptop, the GPU (1050) in it and RAM are bottlenecks. But, that's not its job. The issue here is that 8GB of RAM is clearly under-spec for the price. At this price point in 2023, this is atrocious. It literally makes the other components feel like they're wasted. Then there's the price to upgrade to 16GB lol. $200 is absurd. But, that's Apple. It's one of the main reasons I don't own anything Apple anymore.
My wife's 2012 13" macbook has 16gb and 512gb SSD. So naturally I thought I'd get just pop out and get her a new computer with better specifications, seeing as that computer was 12 years old. I was wrong.

The first McIntosh sold with 128 Kbyte of RAM, but all demo model in shop and TV ads had 512 Kbyte installed. This is because the McIntosh could barely load the OS and have a single window open with 128 Kbyte. When the computer newsmagazine get a whiff of the fact they made a big storm out of it. This to say, Apple have historically been poor with RAM. But at the time they gave the sockets for an expansion - no more...
The RAM chips were also soldered in place on the original Macintosh. The pins were big enough that you could desolder them by hand and solder in sockets yourself, assuming you also had the extra-long Torx T15 screwdriver needed to open the case. Some things really never change!
To be fair, 8GB of RAM for Apple is equivalent to 16GB of RAM for anyone else in price. Edit: I just checked, and it turns out 8GB of RAM for Apple is equivalent to 96GB of RAM for anyone else. Whoopsies!

@d4qatoa Yes but the M3's inefficiency with only 8gb of RAM is much higher than a 13 year old Intel with 8gb of RAM. Because your M3 will spend far more time being starved of work to do because it cannot be fed enough work fast enough. Buying 8gb of RAM on an M3 is like buying an F-16, but removing the wings. You'll have a great engine, but no way to take advantage of it.
wow there are people legit defending apple here? dude, 8gb of unified ram in 2023 means that at best you have 6gb for your system. gpus use quite a bit of vram and 2gb is on the low end of what they need for basic functionality nowadays. just try using this thing. some tests show that the 8gb version can be down to a fifth of the performance of the 16gb model
8Gb of RAM on a computer when it's almost 2024 is borderline criminal. As much as I enjoy Apple products, 8gb is insanely inadequate! 16Gb is rock bottom minimum.
When APPLE used the IBM PowerPC processors in their Powerbook G4’s they had clock speeds up to 667 Mhz, while Windows notebooks had Intel and AMD laptop specific processors with 1.5 GHz speeds. However, those PowerPC’s were a different architecture than Intel and AMD chips, which meant that those 667 MHz speeds were actual equivalent to a 1.6Ghz desktop PC Intel Pentium processors than a 1.6 notebook Celeron chip… Since APPLE uses their own silicon processors, which are head and shoulders above Snapdragon chips, and more efficient than Intel chips, it is entirely possible that 8GB of RAM is enough for a MacBook to suffice for ninety percent of what people will actually use it for. Power users will obviously need more RAM… I am also guessing the majority of the critics are not computer hardware engineers either… 🤔
@@Superz3ro Uh. For the G4 years Athlon was king of the roost, the 64bit instruction set that was so good even Intel licensed it from them because they couldn't do better in house. At the tail end of G4 was Intel Pentium D and Intel CoreDuo. G4 was so bad Apple switched to Intel. They had been upset with it's performance for years. The years G4 was around were explosively good for PC chips. That was the changeover to 64bit, which PowerPC didn't have. That was the changeover to hyperthreading... again PPC didn't have. The change to multicore, PPC didn't have. The major things we think of as a CPU now days the baseline minimum came out of those years. The next decade of CPU development was refining the major leaps forward of that era. The fundamental problem with PPC, ARM, and now M is they aren't general processors. Not the way x86 is. They don't have to do everything well, they only have to do a few things well. They are good at what they do and bad at everything else. PPC, ARM, and M are all RISC. What that means is everything is handled as a separate operation. Any I/O call needed for a calculation, even to cache, is a separate order that needs to be put in the queue. RISC can't fire off orders mid operation, everything has to be queued before the operation takes place. This makes RISC really really good at known operations the pipeline is going to be doing. It's absolutely dogcrap at anything with changing data sets where one operation is waiting for another operation to complete. There's tricks to alleviate it, RISC can run every operation except the ones which absolutely need the new data then run those once it gets it. Unfortunately that's not always possible and it's just a basic design of how RISC works and it can't be gotten around. RISC just bottoms out in certain types of workloads. One thing about RISC, it does really really good at synthetics. Always has. The processor is handled a known data set and then just told to crunch through it. PPC back in the day had synthetic numbers which looked really good and fell apart in the real world. It did crap at anything where user input can upset the whole applecart by asking for something that's not already in queue. It had to toss everything and start over from scratch. Modern RISC isn't that bad, caching has come a long way since then to alleviate the problems. L3 wasn't a thing in PPC days so it doesn't have to flush everything out of memory like it used to. It's just still not as good at handling complex changing datasets as x86. Nowhere near as good. RISC works more like how we think a modern GPU works in how it handles processing data than a CPU. People often see the flashy numbers on all the synthetic benchmarks for ARM and M then OOOH and AHHH. Well. ARM servers have been trying to get off the ground for a decade now and falling flat. Linux has had ARM support for a decade, Microsoft Server for half a decade. And well. Most workloads a server does just don't work with ARM. We see it on our tablets and phones too. Streaming video, wonderful. Known dataset, take the information, crunch the numbers, output video. Ever try to load a large spreadsheet onto an ARM tablet and run it natively? It's shit. It is on M too. The saving grace of RISC now days is how much is ran over the cloud in a web browser, the calculations aren't done on your computer. That only goes so far. Sooner or later people are going to want to do some level of native processing for things RISC is bad at. And btw. This notebook is taking full usage of web apps. 8gigs of ram to open Safari and use everything in a webapp. That's what this notebook's target use case is. For people who can do everything over the web, great. Wonderful. Buy this, have fun with it. Never look back. For everyone else, avoid it like the plague.

if 8gb on macbook outperform 32gb on windows, why should anyone care? People who learned that specs don't translate to real world performance, don't care about specs. People that compare specs buy windows, and people who compare real world performance buy mac. Only since M chips. before the M1 performance was just bad. Then it was a trade off between build quality, good speakers, keyboard, trackpad, screen, longevity, reliability or performance. Now it's a trade off between better build qualitiy _and_ performance or gaming compatibility. Apple is also working on gaming. Yes, i know. I also used to compare specs and people who claimed worse specs were better seemed brainwashed to me. Just small examples: - iphone has lower Megapixels camera, lower GHz chip, lower RAM, and lower battery capacity. Yet it takes better videos, has the fastest chip, not the best RAM but equal to competition - that has twice the GB - and longest battery life. Specs are tempting because they are easy to compare.

When you share the 8GB of RAM with the GPU you're also having to use twice as much of it, as a percentage, as when you have 16GB. And, 16GB is barely acceptable on a laptop that expensive, never mind 8GB.
So, to put the issue simply, the Operating System takes about 6 GB of Ram. 8 - 6 = 2 GB RAM 16 - 6 = 10 GB RAM You effectively have 5x (or 4x more) the free (after OS) RAM with just 8 GB more, and that means you can run more programs with the RAM (which is faster and more reusable than even SSDs).

Soldering is a hassle but don't forget that their parts are paired. You can be the best technician in the world and unable to replace or upgrade the RAM, GPU or even the sleep sensor without a re-pairing tool from Apple.
I got a laptop with one 8G RAM card. Later I opened it up and put in two 16G cards I bought, then took the removed 8G and used it to upgrade my mom's identical laptop. Cost me about $70 total to upgrade two machines from 8GB RAM to 16 and 32.
8GB was the amount I got running in... 2008/2009, and 16GB since 2014 (just for a windows gaming PC, for a linux server it was more like 24GB) In 2017, 8GB was already unbearable to have on a gaming PC, 16GB was the bare minimum, and as today for me that minimum would be 32GB. At least it's what you need in order to avoid swapping at all cost, or, even get rid of the swap once for all (your NVMe SSD will thank you for that... by not dying), what I did 15yrs ago, even before SSDs became a thing, and I don't regreat it. 8GB is just good for the backup Thinkpad I have just in case, and for network maintenance... Apple really became a cult, not to say a sect, nothing is rational about it aside of the cashflow.
I use memory compression on my 10 year old computer (zswap on Linux) and I still have 16GB of RAM. The main purpose of the zswap is that so performance does not hit such a hard wall when I go to disk. The Mac Pro may be using the SSD for swap. Compressed swap also reduces SSD wear when using it for swap.
This really shows that older macs COULD run newer mac os than their last suppported versions a imac from 2008 runs big sur no issue yet it isnt officially support3d these guys are the pros at planned obsolescence. And old pcs with linux oh boy do those last up to 13 years

I would argue 8GB is fine. I'm still using a 4.5 year old laptop without any issues for my purposes and I use it daily.

When APPLE used the IBM PowerPC processors in their Powerbook G4’s they had clock speeds up to 667 Mhz, while Windows notebooks had Intel and AMD laptop specific processors with 1.5 GHz speeds. However, those PowerPC’s were a different architecture than Intel and AMD chips, which meant that those 667 MHz speeds were actual equivalent to a 1.6Ghz desktop PC Intel Pentium processors than a 1.6 notebook Celeron chip…
Since APPLE uses their own silicon processors, which are head and shoulders above Snapdragon chips, and more efficient than Intel chips, it is entirely possible that 8GB of RAM is enough for a MacBook to suffice for ninety percent of what people will actually use it for. Power users will obviously need more RAM…
I am also guessing the majority of the critics are not computer hardware engineers either…

@@Superz3ro well, if you need 32 GB RAM a Mac will cost 4000$ which is insane.

I would choose 16 GB 512 for Base M3, but yes, Apple made it that it´s only 200 bucks or so more to go 18 GB RAM / 1 TB M3 Pro at that point.
It won't change anything
if 8gb on macbook outperform 32gb on windows, why should anyone care? People who learned that specs don't translate to real world performance, don't care about specs. People that compare specs buy windows, and people who compare real world performance buy mac.
Only since M chips. before the M1 performance was just bad. Then it was a trade off between build quality, good speakers, keyboard, trackpad, screen, longevity, reliability or performance. Now it's a trade off between better build qualitiy _and_ performance or gaming compatibility.
Apple is also working on gaming.
Yes, i know. I also used to compare specs and people who claimed worse specs were better seemed brainwashed to me.
Just small examples:
- iphone has lower Megapixels camera, lower GHz chip, lower RAM, and lower battery capacity. Yet it takes better videos, has the fastest chip, not the best RAM but equal to competition - that has twice the GB - and longest battery life.
Specs are tempting because they are easy to compare.

8GB of ram is probably analogous to swapping your laptop SSD to death just slightly after the warranty ends if you use more than one tab open in a browser.
8gb is fine for work and average use. I have 32gb and rarely use over 6 or 7 unless gaming
@@powerplay074yeah, it depends on what your work is and what use is 'average' for you. I have 64Gb of RAM, and firefox after a week of usage, can eat 32Gb RAM with no trouble at all. And I have other programs to run too.
But if 'work' is open one tab at browser and one offline word document, then yeah, I guess 8Gb is alright.
If you use online programs like Figma, Chrome can eat 2-4Gb just for one tab. And there are also other online service, like MS Teams, Google Docs, Web Email clients... And all this with adblocker enabled. Disable AdBlocker and say 'bye bye' to your RAM.
And games on the other hand are alright with 8Gb and 4 cores. As they are console oriented these days, and those have 4 cores and 8Gb of RAM.
So the paradox is, you can easily find a game for any old PC, like x86, or PIII does not matter. But work, if it is connected with Internet, you can not use old PC. Well, recently progress is not so much, so a 10 year, 'premium' PC from those years, with 4 cores and 8Gb can at least open something. Guys its true, 1/8 > 1/16 Tim was right
When you share the 8GB of RAM with the GPU you're also having to use twice as much of it, as a percentage, as when you have 16GB. And, 16GB is barely acceptable on a laptop that expensive, never mind 8GB.
So, to put the issue simply, the Operating System takes about 6 GB of Ram.
8 - 6 = 2 GB RAM
16 - 6 = 10 GB RAM
You effectively have 5x (or 4x more) the free (after OS) RAM with just 8 GB more, and that means you can run more programs with the RAM (which is faster and more reusable than even SSDs).
