Beluga Caviar is Black Gold: MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran (Part 3/3)

  • In this episode of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, Gelareh feeds tankfuls of paddlefish and beluga-valued at up to $35,000 per fish-at the nation's first home of farm-raised caviar, Shilat Fish Farm. Eventually, these prized bottom-dwellers will be killed and harvested in a factory in Northern Iran, but currently they live in conditions similar to their species' natural ocean habitat.
    In the spirit of farm-to-table fine dining, Gelareh gets the royal treatment at Li Dona, a members-only restaurant and jazz lounge. She learns that when it comes to fish eggs, bigger is not necessarily better, as she tastes spoonfuls of "black gold" on toast served with butter, onion, egg, pepper, and lemon juice.

    lol, I've been in Iran for 24 years and I have never eaten Caviar, nor have I seen it in any menu. I doubt you can find it easily. And I guess 99% of Iranians have never tried it just like me. It's absolutely not a traditional and popular dish in Iran. It would be more popular if it was cheaper though.

    • @toomaskotkas4467
      @toomaskotkas4467 9 лет назад +2

      kianoosh ghaffarzade Exactly. Iranians themselves don't eat it but sell all of it abroad by illegally branding their fish eggs as "caviar".

    • @sarahn.8749
      @sarahn.8749 8 лет назад +8

      +kianoosh ghaffarzade As she said, it is luxury food, obviously. But anyway, I've eaten it many times. Not to say I'm rich, but just saying not as rare as you make it to be.

    • @crystalstarizeable
      @crystalstarizeable 6 лет назад +4

      Sarah N. You're right. I've been to Tehran every year and have visited the grand bazaar many times to see lots of shops that sell the same Caviars with the same price. They had a wide variety of caviars from different genus... it's expensive, I've got to admit, that's why many Iranians don't buy it. But it's still widely accessible to the public. Only people don't buy it.

    • @faridbahal1
      @faridbahal1 6 лет назад +3

      It is not that expensive for most of Iranians. I am not rich but i certainly can buy it. The reason people do not eat it is it is not delicacies at least in our taste. So why expend so money for it.

    • @toomaskotkas4467
      @toomaskotkas4467 5 лет назад +1

      @Zoroaster So the Russians, living on the shores of the Caspian sea since the Kievan Rus' and salting all kinds of other fishes had no clue how to salt caviar? And Persians told them how to do it and also taught them the world "caviar". Yeah sounds very believable. Not.

  • @icesnoop

    surprises me that they aren't using mother of pearl spoons as the metal reacts with the caviar and will impart a metallic taste to the dish.

    Uprated. Funny, because in NYC for years I always kept champagne, little breads for toast, quality butter, a few hardboiled eggs, Perrier, lemons and caviar ... for breakfast, especially! I didn't know a little onion could be good, too. I quite like it sometimes. I did find that if it stains your teeth black, it's just inferior fish eggs, dyed. I'm okay with lumpfish eggs, however -- it doesn't have to be the fancy stuff. Not everyone likes this, for sure.

      +calipdis2 That is because foregin media did not enter Iran for the past 30 years or so or at least evven if they did, they only had the intention of exposing the world to the biased dark side of Iran, which is the Iranian regime and their minority supporters... By persuading the mass minds against Iran, people have had the image of a much different Iran which is waaay different from the truth,a distorted image really.

    • @sarahn.8749
      @sarahn.8749 8 лет назад

      +calipdis2 Well, the interviewer speaks to them in Farsi here. I'm sure if she went around speaking in English many would engage in the conversation with her. But anyway, Islamic Republic is to blame, because they don't instill English teaching in the education system.... a way to control the population and an attempt to avoid western influence.

      I too want it, the only thing that comes in my mind that "Halal" could actually been processed by calling upon Ali instead of Allah, that is, instead of La illaha Ilal Allah, someone would be slaughtering animals saying ya Ali madad, quite likely of dominant ignorance

    I always prefered red caviar even though black caviar is more expensive and harder to get. Some fresh baguette with margarine and red caviar.. damn.

    Caviar are just some salty ass raw sturgeon eggs for rich people who pretends that it taste good just because it's pricey. I wouldn't even eat that shit even if someone paid me. 300 buck for a little scoop of salty ass jello??? These endangered sturgeon deserves better. I feel sorry for these fish as sturgeon season comes in California. Poachers are looking to cash in just for the demand of these nasty ass salty jello.

      Caviar (and many other fish roe) are actually quite good. It's quite easy to develop a taste for it. I would agree, however, that it's not actually worth the price for traditional caviar. Fortunately, there are less expensive options.
      Many sushi dishes feature various forms of fish roe, which is where I've had more of them than in caviar-based dishes. The flavour is good, but the texture is what really grabs your attention in many cases.
