I recently listened to the radio dramas for the Original Trilogy and really enjoyed the additional scenes and alternate takes on many of the scenes I am so familiar with. I wanted to see what one of these scenes would look like in the movie so I made this.
First broadcast on public radio in 1996, the Return of the Jedi radio drama was the third installment of the radio dramas created for the original Star Wars trilogy. While the first two in the trilogy were produced by National Public Radio, the third was actually produced by Highbridge Audio, the company that had released the first two series on tape and CD (I credited NPR in the credits but that is an error on my part).
This one was not quite as enjoyable as the first two and the cast didn't feature Mark Hamill as Luke like the first two did, but I still thought it was interesting to edit this to see a very different version of the return of Anakin Skywalker to the light side.

"He is my slave not your Father."
Enough to send anyone into a blind rage.
Palpatine arrogance really was his weakness. Thinking vader would just allow him to kill his son.
@@N.I.A23 Vader was a full blown Sith. For Palpatine to think Vader woukd turn would like Palpatine thinking a fish could survive out of water. Palpatine didn't understand what 'good' is.
"VADER,I AM YOUR MASTER!!!".
"DARTH VADER'S MASTER,BUT NOT ANAKIN SKYWALKER'S!!!".
Palpatine: Vader! i am your master!!
Vader/Anakin: Darth Vader's master... BUT NOT.... ANAKIN SKYWALKER'S!
i love that line
Right?!! It was so EPIC
Same.
Out of all the extra crap that they added to the radio version, with lines that just didn't need to be there, that one I actually appreciate. With Anakin being a slave handed off to different masters his whole life - first on Tatooine with Watto, then to the Jedi and finally to Palpatine, it's something that helps to bring this full circle.
Boom! Palpatine just got owned
That really should have been in the movie.
It legitimately hurts my feelings that the radio dramas have been completely ignored since 2014. It brings warm feelings to my heart to see people of RUclips becoming interested in them and all their glorious weirdness.
Same here! I'm actually planning on making a mini doc about them
It was my first contact to star Wars
4:25 I never noticed in the film that Mark Hamil grabbed Vaders hand and then holds his arm as if he really cares.
Amazing acting right there.
Me either
Oh your right
Vader screaming my son is definitely better than him screaming no.
Also anakins last line here just brings a tear to my eye 😢
You dont judge me i like the no do you
Love the radio dramas of the original movies. Great take on Vader's redemption. The late Brock Peters was a great voice for him for these. Love the alternate take on the death of the Emperor here, with a badass line to boot. "Darth Vader's master, but not Anakin Skywalker's!."
Way better than Vader saying "NO!" in the Blu-Ray Version of Return of the Jedi.
@@drmarioprojectm1510I like both lines
I loved this scene when I heard it years ago. It legit gave me chills. The music is chilling. His famous line "Darth Vader's master...but not Anakin Sykwalker's". Just so beautiful. I remember tearing up somethng awful.
When Vader yells "My Son" it gets me everytime.
Sassy Skyguy! 😂
No one’s gonna talk about that Vader sounds like Bendu?
5:41 🥹I’m proud that you’ve grown into the man I… once… wanted…to be!
One bit I also like from the drama is that C3PO was around for Vader's funeral pyre. The connection between the two probably wasn't worked out yet, but it felt fitting that Anakin's other son was able to bear witness
The Emperor's voice is so cheesy, but I love it.
Really butchered “now young Skywalker…you will die”
The guy doing Vader's voice may not be James Earl Jones, but he really nails it with giving the Sith Lord a sadistic streak the way he has Darth realize Leia is his daughter as well and a potential appraise.
honestly sounds like Vaatu from Avatar legend of Korra, but surprisingly isnt. Gave me a Bamboozle
down the core shaft! down to your death! favorite line
Luke and Anakins dialogue on the ramp made me cry. Just as powerful as the film.
This makes it sound like an anime lol.
Why is that a bad thing?
It has to be dramatized a bit more since it’s only audio
@@zvonimirtomac7896 It's. It's not. It *does* absolutely sound like anime acting, but it's just different, not bad. Anime tends to keep a lot of manga over-explaining things, but people are so used to it, nobody really minds. If anime voice work can still be as legendary as it is while keeping the tradition of narrating your fight scenes the way they do, why change it?
sounds like something out dragon ball
I came here to hear Brock Peters RIP as Darth Vader. WORTH IT!
Amazing that the Emperor is such a sick bastard that but a moment before he was praising Luke having nearly killed Vader. And asking Luke to replace him. Then the next he tells Vader to rise up like it’s nothing. And furthermore that he’s going to take Luke’s corpse and throw it down the core shaft. That part is actually real. In the books and comics that’s exactly what Palpatine was going to order him to do.
That's the Dark Side for you. It's how he got so far - no scruples and (near) unliiiimited power!
In canon comic after ep 5 emeperor gets angry on vader cuts his legs off and then throws him on mustafar to give him flashbacks but then vader survives
@@creeperYT9824 Bro got the MHA treatment
"Vader, put me down!" lol
Anakin: Very poor choice of words
The only issue with the radio dramas of course was that they have to explain what's going on - particularly awkward in duels "Luke, get off from the gantry!". But the acting is generally top notch. And I like Luke calling the Emperor by his name, though the sarcastic "Your Highness" in the film possibly works better. I love the "My son!!" bit too, that might have done well in the film, especially if the alternative was the awkwardly inserted "Noooo!"
Old Anakin’s voice sounds more like young anakin’s lol and I love it
I mean, he was only like 45, not 80😅
@@lordvastor98 Supposedly, Lucas hadn't nailed down Anakin's actual age yet, so that's why unmasked Anakin was Sebastian Shaw instead of David Prowse, who would have in retrospect absolutely fit in there. Bit of an oopsie for the prequels to have only ended 19 years beforehand, buuuuuut Lucas did commit to Luke being a teenager in A New Hope, so he wrote himself into a corner on that one.
Oh well, at least it gave us *three* people to thank for Vader's legendary OT run instead of two.
Naked energy of the dark side.
Scary.
Palpatine sounds like Saruman.
His spirit going to Exegol
Dooku possessed him.
Paul Hecht, or however you spell it, does give me a Christopher Lee vibe, too.
Palpatine:Your arrogance Blinds you Master Yoda now you will experience the naked energy of the Darkside
@@ThomasMusings George Lucas said the Sequels are not Star Wars
ANAKIN?!
“MY SON!” 3:36
“I will: down the core shaft! Down to your death!” 3:43
"Darth Vader's master! But not Anakin Skywalker's!" 3:55
“One day, I will set this right.”
3:55 DARTH VADER'S MASTER BUT NOT ANAKIN SKYWALKER'S
4:02 AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH
People who hate on Jedi for Ewoks and being the “weakest” of the original....just don’t get it....love the extra insight these radio plays give....greatest film trilogy ever...
I loved RotJ, I personally think Ep4 was the weakest of the OT, though I was not there when it released in 1977 (90s kid, so grew up with the OT, but not when it was released), so that probably played a role. To me Empire and RotJ always felt more grand.
@@DrewPicklesTheDark I think a big part of the reason is that the original film would have used much more primitive filming techniques compared to 5 and 6. When it was also created the producers did not believe that it would be all that successful and thus the overall story is a bit more narrow compared to what we see in especially 5 and 6. When people saw 4 in theaters when it first debuted they loved it because it was a novel and unique film for them at the time.
Ewoks rule, dude. Great strategists that were willing to go all in.
Vader’s last line hit me hard
"NOOOO!!!"
"Yeeeeees 😈"
That bit made me chuckle 😅
😂😂🤣😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
this should have been in return of the jedi
Thanks for this. Many more need to hear vital parts not heard in the movies!!!
3:35 is when the old people argue
vader is only 45 in this scene
ROTJ's ending is a dark mirror of the story of Abraham, Isaac and Yahweh:
• The supernatural tyrant orders the father to sacrifice his son.
• The son allows the father to bind his hands and deliver him to the supernatural tyrant.
• The killing of the son is interrupted at the last moment.
• Instead of the supernatural tyrant preventing the father from killing his son, the father rebels and saves his son from the supernatural tyrant's wrath.
This makes Vader's nod of approval at 3:18 even better
Darth Vader was pleased. He would outlive the Emperor and one dya rule
Then anakin Skywalker got to do what he aways wanted
He stopped his loved ones from dying
The prophecy has been fulfilled and completed
As much as i love the dialogue in this, i dont think it should have been in the film, it does its job as an audio drama but if it was in the film, it whould have took away the subtlety of the scene
Is it wrong to actually want this dialogue to be the official dialogue of the film
I feel you
Theres a slight excess of dialogue because of radio needing more explanation. The fight scenes are particularly bad, but the actual dialogue bits are often improvements
It was part of the official Scripts, how do you think the Novels came to be, they're adaptations of the Movie's Scripts, Matt Stover's adaptation of EP III just an example
we just need Ian and Jones to voice them
No
This was amazing. Thank you for sharing!!!
I haven't heard this radio drama in many years. 📻 Thanks for this!
This was the scene that made me realize Dooku was Anakin's father.
It's a little funny to hear the radio drama has to over-explain the setting and physical actions given it's *a radio drama* so I can't exactly complain, but what's funny is it turns a brief battle of outright fury into borderline anime narration.
I kinda like how different it is. It helps that Luke's VA here sounds *very* much like a Yuri Lowenthal kind of hero performance I would expect from a recent dub of his.
Also this is *wonderfully* edited.
Man I need to relisten to all of these, they're so good, I forgot how much this scene was improved in the Radio Drama and it was already a good scene.
"Lord Vader, get to your feet, rise I say!"
Very emotional. Bravo!
Great effort
Omg this is so good I’m getting all the feels
Very cool !
Heaps better than that stupid “No. Noooooo” they edited into the movie.
The next special edition George Lucas should replace the corny " Nooooo!!! " with " That's my son!!!! "
Says you
At least we the Hispanics got a better treatment the “No. Nooooooo” sounds actually really good in the Latin Spanish dub
Love it.
Something weird about hearing Ben Sisko's dad as Darth Vader
Pretty cool!
Only if Palpatine kept his mouth shut then Luke could have Killed Vader and turned to the Darkside
Well, Sidious tried to manipulate with his own words
Bad voice acting aside the dialogue rewrites are better than in the actual film versions all we need is Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones and Ian McDiarmid to voice this and it will be a chefs kiss well done.
It's actually not bad voice acting. I know that in the States, radio dramas were killed by the advent of television, but this is how radio plays were acted when they were the popular medium. BBC radio is a bit different, but the British culture differs from the US
Luke: I am a Jedi
Sidious: The last
Disney: Are you sure about that
"Tell your sister....you were right!" in my headcanon is now "Tell Ahsoka, you were right!"
"Who's that dad?"
Ugh, does she have to be brought to everything?
@@RyanTheDark Cause Dave inserts her into everything he's trying to make her the centerpiece of Star Wars.
One thing I disliked about the radio drama version was how Vader wanted Luke to kill him. I always felt like the original was a parallel to Dooku's death - Palpatine betraying his apprentice once again. I feel like Vader would have wanted to live at that moment.
You forget Vader's self loathing, he hated himself for what he had done, blaming himself for Padme
I think that Vader was suicidal during the OT.
At this point, Vader lost his wife, sister, brother, and who he was. Of course Vader would have wanted to die.
@@user-dk9bh9bx2j yeah If I recalled it right, it said that Vader was ok verge to throw himself to the reactor shaft, after Palpatine. But Luke manage to rescue him
He simply did it for the sake of Luke though, he knew.. It's better to die than witness his son to die on him.
Vader - Anakin always been the best and the most powerfull.
MY SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!
MY SON !!!!
I prefer this
Vader and Palpatine sounds like Bendu from Rebels.
Why couldn't they have done this instead.
Luke was a terrible son.He never listened to his father!
Luke kind of sounds like meliodas from seven deadly sins
cant unhear that now thanks -_-
Happy to help 😀 @@majinalastor5740

Hey can y’all Adapt the Star Wars Movie Comics
We actually plan on doing that eventually, but only for the extra scenes that aren’t in the movies
Shit sounds like a Disney animated film 🤣
Probably shouldn’t have used the ‘S’ word in hindsight.
R these audio comics George Lucas's original dialogue for the scenes or someone else's dialogue for the scene
Sucks no mention of his past, even calling Padme’s name.
Noice
2:18 2:28 I’m sorry I love this radio drama but who talks like this really?
Is this dialogue in one of George Lucas's original scripts or nah
The title literally says it's a Radio Drama.

Why those voices?
This is the radio drama.
@@SharpDesign how this works?
@@Vinicius-ic6rq You take the voices of the digitalized radio drama, then take only the visual data of the movie (or simply mute the movie while playing the voices) and play/record both together.
