A gigantic volume on Dune 1984....what's not to love?! I want to know more about the first draft when Lynch's intention was to make two movies, much like the Villeneuve version. Loving hearing Max's thoughts here, and all your thoughts and questions , this is great listening, thanks, Max, and thank all you guys for Dune Talk Gotta get that book and not eat food to save money, looks like Top Ramen for 30 days.😅. EDIT...this book may sound priceless for the 1984 fan, but when I did a multitask and googled the book while listening to this.... people, it's only 28.99 hardcover at Target. Preorders being taken, and at that price, no Top Ramen is needed here. And seriously... Max, you got Lynch to talk about the movie. ❤
@@patreekotime4578 YES! Thank you for that, that is terrific, my wifi is down, so I've been doing multitasking everything on a smartphone in 4G. It's like playing the piano while wearing oven mitts.. you miss a lot. Great news, thank you!
It's not a guilty pleasure for me, it's a great movie, no guilt, amazing ost, amazing set design, costumes, acting, love the very regal acting, Duke leto is amazing in 1984, not to mention the mysterious and spiritual atmosphere of the movie, people can cry about it all they want, but even herbert liked it and adapted some ideas into his own writing from the movie.
I liked that the David Lynch movie was very faithful to the book mostly but I'll admit if I didn't read the book before, I would have been lost the entire movie. My stepdad(who hasn't read the book) really enjoyed that version though.
The way I've come to interpret Lynch's Dune is if you imagine how Paul's propoganda corps would film the story of Muad'Dib. Extremely literal, downplaying any possible negative aspects about Paul or Leto, and making sure key points of prophecy are there. Even the rain at the end is taken from various ideas in Dune and Dune Messiah about his powers. I think its also interesting that making Paul a true Messiah and ending the film as spiritually uplifting is also how Jodorowski's aborted film would have ended. It may be that aspect was something the that was important to sell the film to the studios. And hey, even today there are still people who read the book and are confused as to why it feels down at the end. This book sounds fantastic! I preordered!
That's a valid way to look at Lynch's version. An in-universe film about Muad'Dib would certainly embellish every aspect of the prophecy, including his powers.
I had read at least the two first Dune books in High School. I graduated in 1983. I had heard about the movie coming out and was very excited about it. Then I was in a record store because I had heard Toto was doing the soundtrack. I asked the guy working behind the counter if they had the album yet and he said yes, and it was playing now. What I heard didn't sound like "music" so much as sound effects of an atmospheric directed scene. Which it was. I bought the album and went home and listened and honestly, other than Dune Desert Theme and a few other songs, it really didn't move me much. Side note: I have seen Toto play live and they have played Dune Desert Theme which is pretty cool. I attended David Lynch's Dune movie when it opened. When I went up to the ticket booth and paid and started to turn around to go in, the ticket taker said "Wait, you need your Glossary". I turned back and was confused by what she said. She handed me a slip of paper that had a long list of words and phrases with their definitions listed next to them. I said thank you and went into the theatre. Funny thing is that they give you a glossary to read but you're in a dark theatre. Kind of a clue of what was to come. I wanted to really like it but it came off like a B movie. Horrible CGI (actually was there any CGI back then or was it just perspective shots of miniatures and layered "cubes"?) I have watched some of it recently and it hasn't aged well at all. A "Masterpiece"? No. It never was and will never be. The new Films? Yes absolutely.
I hope one day, David Lynch, and his production team go back and do full restoration / director's cut of the movie. Ridley Scott got to redo his "Blade Runner" (1982) and it has had tremendous success and reappraisal. It would be great project to come about for the film's 40th anniversary this year.
Max's book is great, highly recommend. He also interviewed Spicediver, whose fan edit is a revelation and available here on RUclips. It doesn't make the movie perfect, but it's a major improvement!
It looks like the greater majority agree that Villeneuve's adaptation is better. However, there are also many fans who have been outspoken regarding their preference for Lynch's version. As that saying goes, "One man's trash may be another's treasure." The DUNE universe really does have something for everyone.
I personally wouldn't say that they were garbage, Lynch was hampered by the Studio, but his direction, lush visuals and the design language were superb, the scifi miniseries was the most faithful adaptation of the bunch but suffer from a miniscule budget, comparatively, and its slavish devotion to the source material but was still a competent and even entertaining effort. Dune 2021 benefits from not only all the technological advances, but from Denis' incredible vision but at the expense of some key details and character work. I say we as fans are blessed to have three solid adaptations that can fill any niche .
