The Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker: A Symphony of Fate
The Star Wars Prequel trilogy tells the tale of Anakin Skywalker: a prophesied prodigy with unparalleled potential. From a slave on Tatooine to a Jedi Knight, his journey is a tumult of triumph and tragedy. Tempted by fear and manipulated by Darth Sidious, his descent into darkness is a cosmic tragedy. His fall is swift and devastating, betraying the Jedi Order and turning against his mentor and brother. Anakin's transformation into Darth Vader is a chilling reminder of darkness that lies within us all.
John Williams captured this tragic tale beautifully in his score to each of the three films. I tried to compile the music in a way in which the story of Anakin with all its ups and downs is at the forefront.The music is divided into different movements designed to capture a specific idea that is relevant to Anakin's story. I hope you enjoy listening!

The first three movements cover The Phantom Menace and deal with the question over whether Anakin's role as the chosen one is his destiny or his fate. It also shows us the weakness of the republic and Palpatine's machinations which have long lasting effects on the republic.

Destiny suggests a sense of purpose or direction that can be influenced by personal agency. Anakin's life, dictated by prophecy, sees him rise from slavery to a Jedi, marked by selflessness and talent. His victory in the podrace secures his freedom but comes with the pain of leaving his mother. The path to becoming Jedi demands sacrifices, shaping his destiny with uncertain consequences.

In the triumph over the Trade Federation, Anakin becomes a hero, yet deeper woes are unveiled. The senate's failure in taking action to support Naboo exposes the weaknesses of the republic. Palpatine's manipulation remains hidden, overshadowed by the threat of the trade federation and their droid army. Political intrigue simmers beneath the surface, undetected.

Fate is an inversion of destiny as it suggests an inevitability of (tragic) events, a burden that must be carried. Anakin's triumph underscores fate's sway in the duel between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Darth Maul. Despite Maul's defeat, the loss of a father figure weighs heavily on Anakin. Entrusted to a determined yet relatively inexperienced Obi-Wan, Anakin's journey veers toward a more rigid Jedi path. Fate's hand is guiding his destiny.
