    "Anticipation" and "how everything looks in relation to everything else".... i think the phrase oats was looking for for the entirety of the video is "internal clock" lol.

    When I was starting out, a way I was feeling it out on my own was to watch the top row of tiles for movement to start (camera scrolling). I found that if I pressed jump just as the top edge of the screen scrolls across the top half of the grapple blocks, the CWJ works more often than not. I found this made it easier for me to see when exactly movement was starting as opposed to just looking at Samus. Like the initial jump, the anticipating is key. It's not about reacting to the camera starting to scroll so much as it is anticipating it after watching the text box start to shrink.
    After grinding that for a long time, though, the timing started to set in and it feels like I've naturally settled into the "tatap" tripping over the input method in response to the text box disappearing. You explain how that feels really well here and it's something a runner can begin to intuit with enough practice. The explanation is definitely going to help me internalize it.

    Oats thank you so much for these tutorials brother. Ive played Super Metroid off and on since it first came out, beating it probably 50 times casually, because Im old, lmao. It wasn't until I started watching your runs/streams that I learned most of these tricks existed. With your tutorials I have learned every one I have tried. This specific CWJ I never thought would be possible for me, but with your help it only took 2 hours of practice in the practice hack and I can now do it somewhat regularly, at least well enough to run harder randomizers. Thanks again Oats, for the help and for the entertaining content!

      He says it saves < 2 frames, unless he's joking. If true then this would be worth it if humans in this game got to SMB1 levels of perfection before bothering.

    It's even harder on emulators, at least the original console has a proper hardware to not freeze or speed up frames, like playing on computer you can't feel the timings on frame perfect things like cwj and lava dive short charge

    Would you like a footpedal switch to reload save states? I am not sure if you have a button on the gamepad you're using to play with or just another gamepad close by with button on it but would it be worth having a foot switch to reload faster?

    I deeply appreciate these little segments, but honestly, I cannot for the love of... erm... bacon (?) get a grasp of damage boosts. I can do Alcatraz over 90% of the time first try. I can even do the little shiny spark thing and fly across the moat, maybe 60% of the time first try. Many other tricks I am enjoying exploring. I have even managed to do the red wall climb for super bombs. And yet, somehow my brain (or fingers) cannot get even close to damage boosting: Something that is so vast and overt in a speedrun. :(
    I have watched clips over and over, but something is not clicking for me personally. The frustration is still at the fun stage, and will probably always stay at that level. I'm too old to give a shit about most things (seen it all before dressed up in a different layer of BS), but for some reason I would like to connect with damage boosting. It's on my bucket list.
    The only other thing on my bucket list at this time is having a clean shit... no wipe!

      once you get them, you'll really get them. try doing them from standstill first: face the direction opposite you want to fly, jump, get hit, keep holding jump, then press and hold backwards. want to go right? face left, jump and hold, take the hit, then immediately hold right.
      from a moving jump is trickier, but a spin jump will help since you turn around immediately in the air. so you can jump forwards, tap backwards, keep holding jump and take the hit, then hold forwards again. it's definitely a little fussy but you'll get it! just remember that the most important part is to NOT be pressing any direction when you take the hit.
      try using the practice rom and slowing down the framerate (controller 2 will let you do this) and trying it that way too until you get a feel for it.

    imagine oats thinking we can't react to 8 frames? I get less than 140 ms reaction in the human benchmark more than once. Speak for yourself buddy.

    • @ThePenguist
      @ThePenguist Год назад +3

      I don't think he is saying that you can't physically react within 8 frames. He is saying that if you want to perform this consistently you need to create muscle memory of the action. The anticipation allows you to do the same action the same way by rote instead of relying on raw instinct to react.

    • @joonge00
      @joonge00 Год назад +2

      @@ThePenguist speedrunning is all muscle memory. Not many games require reaction time. They have 10000 hours of practice, you can't just replicate that with a stupid video that says it's 8 frames and just do this.

    • @Oatsngoats
      @Oatsngoats  Год назад +19

      I say you can't react to 8 frames because you can't react to 8 frames. Idc if you got 140ms on human benchmark twice because you anticipated properly. Do 100 and figure out your average while removing outliers. Now I also acknowledge this is probably a troll comment so ya

    Just out of curiosity: is it possible to hit the double jump in moat room if you have already collected the missle or is the missle required to maintain the momentum needed to hit the second jump?
