He presents training in 7 days. Each of 7 items are commands that he believes a dog should know. They are presented in part ii of the book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxK8-VQWpYThx4IC6MiIvb6VS1ebTzzdxq . The parts of the guideare divided: part i know your dog part ii the seven commands part iii cures for 7 behavior problems. Each chapter presents a topic, a dog's story, and a "what to do". It was written simply and you can jump from chapter to chapter to review anything as needed.

I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide ruclips.net/user/postUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!

I just wanted to say that I have been using your videos solely to train my puppy (started when he was only 3-4 months old and he is now 8 months old), and they seriously work almost instantly with him! Every lesson I’ve taught him, he has picked up on so quickly that I can’t even believe it. I also get compliments from people all the time about how well behaved he is! I just wanted to say thank you!

Thank you for showing how to teach with just one person! All the "come when called" videos I've seen so far have required 2 people, and not all dog parents are in a 2 person household! It's also so encouraging to have you say that dogs can be distracted for up to 30 minutes outdoors. I thought that my pup was doing super poorly with "look at me" when she would completely ignore treats in favor of sniffing the ground, but I guess she's just a normal puppy! I constantly need to be reminded to stay positive and focus on long-term success over many months instead of expecting so much out of my pup so quickly. Your videos totally help with that!

I just got my golden puppy yesterday, he’s 6 weeks and already knows sit and paw. He follows me, and I try to associate that with the words “Come here!” or, “Ben, come!” But he just doesn’t acknowledge noises 😂 I know he’s not deaf because he hears my music and his ears move when he hears something really loud, but he could care less about a squeaker toy, the neighbors chickens or all the birds singing. Over time as our bond gets stronger I’m sure he’ll grow out of this though.

@@julias7865 Ah yes- I just started my first real-life training when covid 19 hit too... Well it sounds like she's doing great at other stuff! Dont worry- there are ALL kinds of training ideas that can help with this and all kinds of reasons our dogs don't do certain things! If you google "how to teach your dog recall" it will give you lots of good leads... Zak here is awesome! One little thing you can do is whenever your dog is ALREADY running toward you, you can say "come!" and then reward with excitement, affection, food, etc. That's just one tip of lots :) Anything by Patricia McConnell, Ian Dunbar, Nicole Wilde, Jean Donaldson, Sophia Yin, Susan Garrett, whole dog journal- those are all great resources using positive reinforcement and science-based training. It's cool stuff! 😊 Hang in there- sounds like you're making a lot of progress!

Hi Zak, love your videos and dog training. My dog barks at specific things. She barks at the birds flying in the backyard. She barks at people and dogs walking on the front sidewalk. She barks at the mailman. Daffy is a 2 year old poodle rescue dog. We have had her for 9 months. I just watched the video on training to come and found I am doing everything wrong. I am going to work on this first.

These videos have been incredibly helpful for my new dog, i found him on the streets at probably around 7-8 months old, when i first got him he was scared of a collar, scared of a leash, didnt know what toys were and went crazy over any kind of food. now after a few months and the help of these videos he knows basic tricks such as sit, shake, lie down and spin. i have in the past week been working on leave it and look at me so i can train him to walk on a leash properly.. i never really realized how much work goes into training dogs, i always thought it was like a 2 day thing to have them learn a trick and then no practicing over the next few months or weeks.

You promote humane and positive teaching with treats and physical touch. Is there any concern with digestion in giving the dogs too much treats or feeding them too much ? I'm a new dog owner and have a puppy want to make sure I'm doing it right

    • @zakgeorge
      @zakgeorge  7 лет назад +32

Absolutely! Use quality treats and don't use large treats. I routinely empahsize the importance of using very small pieces of a great tasting treat. For example, I often use pea sized pieces of meat.

Nathaneal Desir depends on the dog, and the calories it needs. If you use meat, chicken no problem. Cheese and other things you have to use carefully. I have vizslas, the are not great eaters, and they run fast as hell for a long time every day, so they can eat how much they want and are just built of bones and muscle. That's why they depends a bit on which dog, how far they run. If the dog loves to eat, you have to give a little less if you feed goodies for training. If you are not sure ask a vet

Wish I had a calm outdoor space to practice this.... as soon as we get out the door there is a very busy road and always a bunch of people and dogs, since we leave next to a playground/park... I do this a lot at home and do random recalls when my 4 month old least expect it with a very delicious reward and lots of praise. He does great indoor but the jump is too big for him to do just as well outdoor. I will keep at it though... handsomely reward the small successes and keep making tiny steps so none of us feels discouraged. Just needed to vent really, thanks for your videos

I will have to begin training the shepherd your way in order him to catch up with beagle ☺

About the question regarding what we prefer out of adult dogs and puppies: it depends on what you want to teach us, and when the dog should have learned that specific thing. An example: a puppy should be pottytrained as a puppy, use a puppy to show us. An adult dog can be taught to stay- no matter what, use an adult dog. You are a great dog trainer and i really love Your videos! Keep it this good!

As always, you are AWESOME Zak! As a dog trainer-in-training, as it were, I have run into the occasional person who says, "my dog should just come when I call him. He shouldn't have to feel MOTIVATED". 🙄 Ugh. Well 1) good luck with that, and 2) FYI, your dog does NOT know that you saved him from a shelter and buy him expensive food. He does not "owe you" anything because a) that's human logic (do I really have to explain that??) and b) he's already "repaying" you by being his goofy, unconditionally loving, furry little self. From there, you just have to take the time and do a little work (yes, a little work- sorry folks) about how dogs "process" information and respond since humans and dogs have very different ways of communicating. If people aren't willing to be interested in learning about how dogs learn, they shouldn't get a dog. Thank you Zak and all of you great dog-parents out there who are excited about our beloved canine companions!! 💕🐾🐾

Zak, I really appreciate your patience and enthusiasm in dog training and agree with many of the approaches you take when teaching new behaviors and commands. Do you have any videos showing the end "results" of any of these dogs you've worked with (e.g., showing perfect recall off leash, demonstrating 'stay' in public with distractions, or rapid response to command at a distance)? I've been going through a lot of your videos, since they are fun to watch. However, the videos are all "day 1" training content - it's hard for viewers to imagine what the outcome might be using your approaches. It would be really helpful if you show "results" videos!

Boy did I need this lesson. I have two 10 mos old Yorkies, I was getting so discourage about their not coming. I have been watching your videos.
I have them doing an elevated sit and stay also not going thru a door until told too. The coming when called is hit or miss. I stopped doing the treat thing. Will start up again. Thanks.

I did exactly the same thing ! You should record your training and post it that way other people can see the results. Its great fun and motivates you even more to train. You should check out some of my vids.

Would you be able to do a video where you are training one dog while another watches? I just recently rescued a pup and I'm having a hard time reinforcing concepts I've taught him while my other dog is around, especially if I'm alone. It'd be really helpful and I think would benefit them both.

I've blown it, but I am encouraged to continue training. I guess I missed that this can take months. Months indeed.

Good work! We've had a bit of difficulty teaching Lucy to come consistently. Perhaps it's us humans that need to work on the consistency!

Hi Zak, I have a new 1 year old german shepherd mix that I adopted from a shelter in Croatia. He lived outside with other dogs his whole life. My problem is that he goes absolutely crazy when he sees other dogs on a walk. he lunges, barks, growls, pulls, just everything. Can you please do a video on how to stop this behaviour? or just give me some tips please? it's just me that takes care of him and he already almost dislocated my shoulder so i have constant pain because i have to take him for a walk 3 times a day.
He also tries to chase the cat in the house so i have to keep him on a leash all the time. The main problem is the pulling though since he's high energy and it's getting harder and harder to take him out on walks.
