@@SonneIstTot I feel that too, this one is also a banger but with the context that he disappears for 5 years after this it must've been a trip that he got a Pulitzer and so much praise for an album dunking on Fox News and saying Black people are cursed.
The ending of how it reverses is so cool. By the end he's been saved, but if his father died, the album goes backwards instead and ends with him dying in a gunfight. It's so incredible. There's a great analysis video on it, the whole album makes sense in reverse order and is still logically consistent
An interesting detail about DNA. is that in the verses, he mentions exactly 23 things that are "in his DNA", the same amount of chromosomes humans have in their DNA
Kendrick in his early work, especially with GKMC and even moreso in TPAB, had this not fully evolved philosophy and political thought where I think he really thought if he just created the perfect album, the perfect music, that his words can inspire people and save the world. Save his community, his people, specifically. And instead his words were misconstrued. Nothing changed. His sister still got pregnant as a teenager. The hood didn't stop with its gang violence. Black people are still killed in the streets. He is definitely angry in this album. Angry and hurt without knowing the reason or source for the hurt and lashing out. (That's why when people say DAMN. is his "lightest" album, I don't think they listen to what Kendrick's actually saying, they just think of the vibes. Because in this album, he seriously ruminates on if Black people are cursed by God with suffering and to eternal damnation. That's very, very heavy)
Yeah its heavy and sad and I feel like a lot of black leaders went through something like this. Like what if this is all pointless? Can we be saved? He mentioned if pac felt this way on a song and its just depressing. Definitely his most depressing and dark album.
This albums theme is insane and the album is so overlooked because not as much people understand its story. You can play the album forwards and backwards to tell the stories of Wickedness and Weakness, which is said on the first track/intro
this might be a really hot take, but I genuinely believe kendrick doesn't have a single bad song on an album, i feel like he has 5, 10/10 albums, DAMN, GKMC, MR MORALE, TPAB AND UU
I recommend watching "A Deep Dive into DAMN. - Kendrick Lamar's Darkest Opus." It gives you a big eye opener to the entire album and its very in depth and could make the entire album feel very differently. Amazing video though, keep up the good work.
I highly recommend Mr morale and the big steppers by Kendrick Lamar, after watching your reactions to gkmc and tpab and damn I see that u love his lyrical ability and story telling, and mmtbs does exactly that. I really think you won’t regret listening to that project, it’s been growing more and more on me each time I listen
i listened to this album for the first time last year and at the beginning of Feel while listening to the lyrics i just went "damn" and went " OOOHHH, DAMN" and it clicked in my head why it was named that
not just as well, it tells a completely different story. when playing it normally kendrick starts off as a gangster and ends up taking the route of "weakness" to end with him becoming a better person. in the other way kendricks dad dies, and he ends up going down the "wickedness route", where he delves into the street life, not giving a fuck but then ending up hurting the people he loves. then it ends with "the old lady" aka god roaming the earth, then ending kendricks life after he has bvecome such a terrible person.
This guy is hilarious and I hope he gets more support. Coming from a big Kendrick fan one of the things I love about him is the polyrhythmic sound he gives his words over the music. In non-technical speech that basically means different rhythms happening at the same time. If you’re looking to jump into another genre that’ll take you into a journey and that has a lot of complex nature I’d love to see you react to TOOL.
29:26 definitely makes sense where you’re coming from saying that, and that very well may be part, but another big reason black women wear wigs, or have really short hair, is because it’s incredibly easy to damage, and wigs, bonnets, and certain styles are protective for the hair. Along with the fact that, doing black women’s hair into those styles can take HOURS, like, my fiancé was at her appointment for 13 hours. Granted that was an extreme case, it was still estimated at 8 hours. I’m not a black man or woman so I cannot say whether your comment is accurate, just providing more insight on what I have learned myself :)
havent watched yet but thank god for that title because the amount of disrespect DAMN. gets even from Kendrick fans is so frustrating to me. just because DAMN. is more commercially successful and was made with pop and trap elements, does not mean it's not on the level of the other albums, or that its less complex. DAMN. is such a great album
FEEL. is the best track imo, it resonates with me so much as a genuine person that it's crazy. Glad some channels react to these till this day, it's awesome to see. Love from Finland.
Edit: I just saw the ending and know he read about but fuck it, I already wrote it😤 A dope thing about this album is that it tells a different story if you listen to it backwards. The original back to front is Kendrick’s story, where he learns to balance the virtues and hardships that come with being famous. The other way around starts with DUCKWRTH where his father gets shot which start the alternate timeline where he tells the story of where his carrier might have led if he actually HAD lost his father and didn’t have the guidance. The album starts with “Is It Wickedness? Is it weakness? U decide”, cause u decide the story you’re gonna listen to. Original front to back u go from LUST to LOVE, and from PRIDE to HUMBLE. The other way around it’s flipped so he loses himself in it. I can only say one thing about this concept, DAMN.
After you listen to Mr. Morale, I’d love to see you do a review of section.80 You get a glimpse of how consistent jazz has been in his music since the beginning.
Kendrick was the first rapper that really showed me the artistry of hip hop and rap. I really only listened to rock and metal growing up and some friends listened to rap but it was more trap stuff that seemed surface level.
I have a recommendation for you......."De todas las flores" by Natalia lafourcade.......... i never in my life have heard anything more beautiful than that album.......the lyric translations are available on her own website.........she translated all the poems to English by herself ❤.......the album is jazz and folk alternative....... luckily i found it online so i purchased 2 copies ....... that's how good that album is.
