I have been researching this topic for some time now and these are by far the best series of videos I have found. Very comprehensive and informative. Well done. Thank you

Excellent video explanation - the content is inspirational about how to use basic materials and how domestic residences evolved. Thank you for making these videos - I really enjoyed watching the complete set.

Thanks for posting this up, it's well explained and will certainly help those starting out in this trade.
At the beginning of your 1st film in this series you over wet the wall with the hose pipe especially in the middle when you first turned it on. Watch the film again and you'll see just how much water the middle gets as you talk about wetting it down, you barely touch the edges much.
I've been a Lime plaster spread since about 1995 and went to work for Mr Ian Constantinedes (ConstantlyInKneeDeep to his friends) whose company/baby was called St Blaise ltd. I worked with them for about 2 to 3 years in total. We also a long and close association with Mr Peter Ellis and his company 'Rose Of Jericho' near Dorchester which was really handy for specialist materials and paints etc. I treat the lime skim a bit like a multi-finish gypsum plaster, you put on a tight coat, leave it for 10 minutes, put on the final skim, leave that a while before going over everything with a sponge float, leave that for 10 mins a short while then it's long stroke, long stroke with the steel trowel to bring up a cream which you work into the last blemishes.
For a real test of the wall face, to really see all the dips and imperfections, shine a site light on the surface. Small tip, it's a great way to see just how good your work is (or not), just DO NOT do this when the client is in the room looking at the wall.
There are two schools of thought about laying a lime surface onto another lime surface. 1.The background should be so dry that you can strike a match on it. 2. The background should be still slightly green so that the two materials can amalgamate better. I'm with the slightly green thinking and haven't really had any problems apart from it drying too quickly, I also slake and make my own mortars and plasters and found the local limestone dust produced for the farmers makes a great top coat lime skim, 2:1.
This dust is called 'Flour' and it's spread on the fields to break down soils with a high clay content, there are two grades of this available at the quarry near Cannington but you can buy it from a farmers suppliers like Mole Valley Farmers.

thank you, fantastic video. I'm renovating my 1927 house and want to use these materials over original lime plaster. I'd like to come to your classes but see you're on a gap year. Will check in next year

Any chance you can show how to make lime putty for those who cant get it ready available and how much water to pour on top. How long should it mature for before use?

Why is lime putty better than mixing powdered calcium hydroxide or slaking lime yourself? thanks!

You absolutely are not putting 1mm coats on.
