- Toney was ranked fifth at middleweight by the IBF.
Nunn was a 1/20 favorite.
Nunn's purse was $500,000 and Toney's was $65,000.
Toney angered Nunn with constant trash talk, and Nunn promised to give him a beating. "I'm going to punish him," Nunn said. "I'm going to enjoy punishing this guy."

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.
james toney, easily one of the best boxers ever..
No argument for that statement.
He was great but Roy Jones Jr. Beat him in his prime
@@r0ckstar666 thats true, but recently roy jr said james toney was the best boxer ever, go figure
@@bingochoice yeah he took to many shots to his head and a guy who worked for the garbage company in Russia knocked him out. However he did fight Tyson to a draw last fight
defo if u liked toneys style in lower weights, check out Kash Farooq bantamweight.at presennt his style like james toneys
Michael "Big Daddy" Nunn was no joke. He did a long stretch for dealing drugs.
Nunn was outboxing Toney but as the fight progressed Toney figured Nunn out. He was susceptible to the left hook. Nunn had his right hand down exposing his chin throughout the fight and Toney took note of that.
If this version of Toney showed up v RJJ it could have been different. His handspeed was slow that night.
This is probably my favourite fight, and the primary reason Toney became my favourite fighter. Nice work. Cheers!
Toney-Jirov was great as well.
Hard to believe James Tobey could ever make middle weight????
Incredible but true
he used to drop a LOT of weight in a short time
@@shanehowell8169 no shit sherlock
They stopped the fight too early , he was still breathing
Yes, one can still see signs of life there.
You've obviously never stepped inside a ring with a comment like that.
Malcolm Baldwin lol
shauncoop74 think he was being sarcastic lo
I don’t want to hear shit about any middle weights or top boxers. These beasts are putting in a display of poetry in motion that is unmatched by todays landscape
Just shows you lights out was was one bad mother NO ONE EVER DID THAT TO MICHEAL NUNN
More James Toney Please!!
Nunn was never the same after this fight
You right about that
Should have stopped it after the knockdown. He was out
Very true. His career went downhill fast after this fight and he was nowhere near as dominant as he used to be.
There was clear complacency by Nunn here. It may have cost him the fight as I believe he was ahead at the time of the stoppage.
He was already losing after round 7. It was only a matter of time.
Hamza Khaliq I think Nunn had the ability to keep away and could have coasted to victory.
@@H.K.5 I agree, he wasn't complacent in the later rounds he was exhausted the body shots James threw throughout the fight wore him down. By the eighth round his punches had nothing left so he had no way of keeping Toney off him, the writing was on the wall.
Pressure pressure pressure wore Nunn down with hard punches clean and accurate he doggy Nunn all fight wouldn't not let him breath after the 7th rds he slow down just enough for Jt to batter him with counter hard punches only guy who can shoulder roll a southpaw.
He couldn’t grapple and that was the only way to beat James.
James Toney signature chopping right hand, straight out of a position bent over at the waist.
he better try and knock Nunn down.....Ohhh he did it🤣🤣🤣
What a great fight!
That shot was just like the one Frazier hit Ali with at Madison Square Garden.
Awesome highlight!
Middle weight division was fire back then, Michael nunn was fleet footed very good footwork in and out side to side constantly steps off the line changes angles ,toney’s defense was incredible, nunn was setting toney up with the uppercut after he ducks down the jabs, but nunn was fighting toney at close range not using his height and reach advantage to the full extent, and not great defense ,was getting hit by them rights constantly finally koed.
These guys would fuck up Canelo
Great video. I like how you showed which round was what unlike other highlights I watch.
Era una chingonas Nun, pero encontró su nemesis en la figura de Toney uno de los más completos peleadores ever ...
James "can't be touched" Toney
When he beat evander I knew he was a great fighter
Holyfield was thoroughly shot by then.
I wish there could've been a James Toney vs Julian Jackson fight...
Would’ve been extremely interesting. Toney has fantastic defense but Jackson had equally admirable timing; I think it’d be a contest of the Hawk’s power and Lights Out’s chin.
@@LowTierFallout I'd put my money on The Hawk's power.
@@gl6996 Yeah that's fair; I'd have Toney landing the first hard counter but we'll never know now :( what a shame
@@LowTierFallout We, the fans, have seen great fights but we've missed out on great matchups, too.
He would of battered Jackson easily
One of the best middleweight fights of the 1990’s. I wanted Nunn to win because I was never a fan of Toney’s trash talk. But after watching the fight at the time and many times later, I have to admit James Toney was a great fighter. Would’ve loved to have seen him fight Chris Eubanks and Nigel Benn, but sadly it never happened. I think Toney could’ve beaten them both.
In the History of World Boxing, James " Lights Out" TONEY is one of only 2 Men to Ever Capture World Boxing Crowns from Super Middleweight ,Light Heavyweight, Cruiserweight, and Eventually Becoming a World Heavyweight Boxing Champion...The other Man to Hold this exceptionally rare and Highly Coveted Distinction is none other than Roy Jones Jnr.
Nun was very carless there and it cost him the fight.
Toney was a better fighter, Nunn was flashy but couldn't hurt Toney. Nunn was beaten fair and square by one of the best fighters ever, Toney was a mean bastard and comes across as a not very nice person but he was a hell of a fighter. Toney was never stopped or knocked down, even at Heavyweight.
By "Nun was carless" do you mean there was a nun there who didn't have a car or was Nunn careless ?
I was just going to say Toney was down once against Jones more or less Toney was off balance when he was show boating against Jones Jr he was not hurt, I wish Toney would have fought Jones Jr at heavyweight Tony would have knocked Jones Jr out cold
Also the shows you how much more superior James Toney was then Michael Nunn. James went on to win the super middleweight and heavyweight championship of the world,Nunn was done after this fight
@@crewcab1984rv Nunn spent 15 years in prison, he was released in 2019.
If Toney had thrown right hinds straight down the middle instead of looping them across the center line he could have ended it a lot sooner. Watch carefully and you will see that Nunn's head is right there. The fatal flaw of most lefties.
Great fight. James Toney at his best was something else. This was plan B for Toney - the counter punch brawler - because Nunn was naturally a much bigger man with a great jab.
Nunn was ahead on points but Toney was coming and landing more power punches in the last 3 rounds and that affected Nunn's stamina
That was indeed a damn good fight all the way through. The crowd had gotten their moneys worth.
BAD. Referring!##!!!
Never liked Nunn... He got what he deserved by JT.
This was considered a huge upset at the time. No one heard of James Toney until this fight.
He was an undefeated contender, his name was known. maybe not ranked top 5 but he wasn't a novice.
@@4EyedAnimation Up until this fight Michael Nunn didn't lose a round that I recall. So when he lost his title this came as a huge shock to me. Nunn was never the same again. This is the first time I heard of James Toney. Nunn was very hard to hit until he faced Toney in the later rounds.
@@sisophous Ya Nunn was unbeatable up to this point. Toney was definitely not the favorite, but wasn't a totally mystery. I think the knock on Toney was he didn't have KO power (which he didn't) but was a slick boxer. Saw him fight Iran Barkely live in Vegas a few years later. Talk about pitching a shut out.
I did not enjoy this fight at all. I was never impressed with Nunn. He was a ok fighter to me. Nunn had no power and he didn't impose his will on Toney
But he was ahead on the scorecards
Tony was the best fighter of his generation
Fucken toney with the defensive mastery
Two great fighters, one bad referee!
I didn't realize how fast James was
Nunn was lights out in the 11th.
Luv ya always 2nd2Nunn!
Toney would be Mayweather s nightmare 🤣🤣🤣
Save that L.H.
Damn I forgot Michael lost his first fight by getting knocked out in his home town 😳😳😳 that’s the worst
Impressive jabs by Nunn. Hard rights by Toney. Both fighters have great chins and great determination !_!
Damn, what a fight. Nunn was outboxing Toney for 7 rounds straight & looked like he'd cruise to a pretty comfortable victory, but Toney would flip the script.
This was Toney’s toughest fight. He had to dig deep. In this fight.
2 of my favorite middleweights. Amazing bout 🥊
One of the greatest left hooks of all time that was...
love toney ,i knew he would win this fight
Tony's in a different league
Toney was setting that left all night till he got the range
Michael "Middle Daddy" Nunn.
Punched that smile off his face
should be in the all of Fame...
Second to none was nothing on this night!
HE HIT THAT MAN BEHIND THE HEAD!
Reggie Johnson was robed , he beat Toney hands down.
Nunn is nice with it i cant lie
👍💪👏
What's the name of that theme music ? It's cool
ruclips.net/video/F2_pg8xd1To/видео.html Pop the ear phones in for this mate 👍
"Lights out"!
Thanks for sharing this video.
Heavy hands always beats speed. JT is one of the best
Toney has the Star of David on his trunks. Is he Jewish?
He wore the Star of David out of respect for his manager, Jackie Kallen.
@@bfgtech48 she paid him an extra few thousand
blacks are the true Jews
Nope, just putting his opponents on notice that that's would be what they would be seeing before the night was over.
