If ever a decision could be reversed many years after it should be this fight, Larry Holmes clearly won this match and should be awarded the belts with a letter of apology from the sanctioning bodies, judges, and recognised as a two-time world heavyweight champion of the world.
that's exactly what i tought. It shouldn't be forbidden to re-score long time after. It would be a big mark of respect for all these great fighters like Holmes who got robbed in the past.

He was not a great Heavyweight, but Michael Spinks is the greatest 175-lb Champion, ever, the first one to ever win the HW title, and still the only one who can actually be PROUD of beating the Lineal Champ, and he did it against one of the ALLTIME greats. Spinks is also one of the most AWKWARD boxers who ever got into a ring.
@@thelevisullivan Holyfield began his career as Cruiserweight, Moorer began at Light Heavy, so neither was a real modern day heavyweight, they’re not like the super-Heavies that were fighting by then. You are correct, Moorer beat the lineal champ, but long after Spinks had beaten Holmes, and Holmes was a natural heavyweight, not to mention dominant, and an alltime great, historic, long term HW champion, longer than anyone but Joe Louis. Also, this isn’t Moorer’s fault but Holyfield lost that fight as much as Moorer won it, that’s the fight after which they discovered a problem with Holyfield’s heart (non-compliant left ventricle, and a small hole between the upper ventricles, the symptoms of which were severe fatigue in the Moorer fight.). Spinks is the one and only name that matters in this achievement. Roy Jones and James Toney - guys who won “a heavyweight title from some guy with a belt” - don’t belong in the same conversation as the LINEAL LH champ winning the LINEAL HW title by defeating the long term HW champ. It’s only been done once. And Moorer did it 8 years after Spinks against an Evander Holyfield who, that night, was missing one of the main attributes that made him the HW Champion, his conditioning & endurance. Holyfield won and retained the title (until Bowe) because he outworked bigger guys. He was a shell of himself in the Moorer fight. Again, not Moorer’s fault. Just saying.
It turned out to be a good fight towards the end, Larry was robbed big time. He never looked troubled by Spinks for the first five rounds, Spinks was on the defence it was almost as though he'd been told as long as you don't go down you will win.
@@deneshn No way, and even if he did punches accumulate over 12 rds which are scored individually. having overall more punches doesn't automatically mean you won the fight. I thought Spinks edged the first fight by a round or two, but imo Holmes won the second fight.
I think this fight is so hard for holmes because michael spinks style, he is an elusive fighter thats why holmes primary weapon, his jab didn't worked well, instead spinks jab and combo disturbed holmes so much. Spinks actually a good fighter, he remind me of holyfield before move up to heavyweight (they had similar style on attack mode, which is jab and combo punch, but in defence mode holyfield use guard and spink use slipping).
Holmes got robbed, they wanted to punish him bcuz he said Marciono couldn't carry his jock strap... payback. It would have been a good fight Holmes in his prime.
Spinks was like : " I clearly won" Holmes was like : " Nope, I won" Tyson was like : " Ok, Larry, i'll knock out Spinks, for you" And you Spinks, i'll koed Holmes for you". It's settled then
Holmes wasn't liked by the boxing officialdom - he rubbed them up the wrong way , which he admitted to , and this can be the only reason the judges went against him . Although he lost the first fight , Larry Holmes won this rematch fairly and squarely in my opinion . There is no doubt that he outpointed Spinks , which makes the decision even more baffling - but not entirely unexpected .
Both don't have punching power to knock other. They can be cruise weight fighters. Heavy weight boxing is different class like Tyson, Ray Mercer, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, Tommy Morrision
1.) Holmes got robbed 2.) Holmes couldn't time Spinks 3.) Holmes couldn't tell when Spinks was hurt 4.) Never understood why Holmes did attack Spinks in the 14th rd and finish him
I will give you that! It is true in the first fight Holmes slack off which cost him to make history with a 49-0 record. But come on!! The rematch??? Holmes was a firecracker from start to Finnish. However I will say Holmes should have knowing the Judges were going to screw him. He had four different opportunities to knock Spikes in the rematch so that was his big mistake. But all and all Holmes won it was the judges who beat him.
@@bayoeblayboy Yes and that was a problem Holmes had and that was he wasted to many punches to the point he would run out of gas. That is how George Forman got his ass kick by Ail
Well Mad Dog if someone would have slapped a muzzle on Larry's mouth and told him to keep Rocky Marciano name out of his big disrespectful mouth then he would not have "lost" both fights. Knowing when to stfu is a good thing.
Highway Robbery!! Larry Holmes won the rematch hands down!! Holmes cleaned Spinks's clock from start to finnish and Spinks knows it!! Count how many punches Holmes landed and it does not take a genius to know that Holmes out punch him the entire fight. The fight was rigged because the judges hated Holmes they just wanted to find an excuse for him to loose. Granted Spinks won the first fight! However Holmes kick Spinks's Ass in total domination fashtion. The Judges beat Holmes not Spinks. It's called Paid Off!!
Well the punch stats showed spinks landing 4 more punches than holmes, so if that's the measure then spinks won on points even though larry hurt him more.
@@matsumoku1 The first fight yes I agree Spinks landed more punches. But the Second Fight??? Get Real!! Holmes clean Spink's Clock from Dtart to Finsh!! The only mistake Holmes made was he should have knowing to Knock Out Spinks and not depend on a Decision . He Should knowing the judges where going to be bias against him.
@Johnny Fash the way I see it is this. Spikes did not beat Holmes, Holmes beat him self. In another words he got lazy. Holmes knew the only way he would win is if he knocks out Spikes. His manger even said so before the fight started that he must win by a K.O or the judges would go againts him. Holmes had every opportunity to knock Spikes out but failed to do so. I still belive Holmes won the rematch and got robed but at the same time he screwed him self when he did not take Spikes out.
@Johnny Fash the reason why Holmes ran out of gas is because he wasted too many punches. Had Holmes saved his energy for the latter rounds he would had a chance to knock Spikes out. But again Holmes was 37 at the time and started to slow down.
Larry really shouldve remained respectful towards the Marciano family. He really didnt do himself any favours by speaking out denigrating Rockys achievements.
Larry might've been a little shrewd in his assessment of Rocky Marciano but to be robbed of his title is appalling. Rocky didn't defend his title but six times only held it two years before retiring,Holmes defended his belt 20 consecutive time, only bested by Joe Louis' 25 times.
This fight demonstrated a big flaw in Holmes' game: he wasn't a knockout puncher, and didn't finish guys when he had the opportunity. Considering how easily Mike Tyson blew through Spinks, one would have thought Holmes could have finished the job over 15 rounds...
@@SmokeShow1971 Maybe. But Holmes was well aware that the judges may have been against him. Solution? Beat Spinks up. Effective aggression. Not plodding around and throwing Spinks down like a playground fight. Holmes was too cautious and didn't change his style up.
By this time, Holmes was a shot fighter. The signs were there in the Carl Williams fight of 1984. Holmes should have quit right there and forgotten about chasing Marciano's record.
Holmes had marks on his face...so there is that. that said, Spinks made more money for the promoters fighting Tyson than Holmes would have drawn. we all know, it's about the cash, not legacies. Holmes was too old at this point and the public would have been expecting a quick KO with Holmes vs Tyson. The Public was sold that Spinks would be a hard fighter for Tyson to figure out....wasn't the case, but the money was made.

Spinks fought just enough to keep the rounds even, and Holmes was exhausted the last few rounds and didn't do much, which explains why Spinks got the decision. I scored it a draw
@@emzid5105 but Holmes lost many rounds in the second half of the fight. It was definitely close. Holmes came out all awkward looking, intense and rattled, desperate. Just be like Ali, stay calm and box smart, win on points, forget trying to take the opponents head off.

On the other side, he also tought that couldn't win on decision, that's why he tried to take his head off. However, Holmes won the first 5 rounds CLEARLY. It means that he only needed 3 rounds to win. the judges, since the 4 th round, only gave Holmes the 7 th and the 14 th... They gave every LITTLE SINGLE ROUND after the 4th wich was looking more even to Spinks. It's absolutely ridiculous. 42 out of 46 experts who were ringside, gave this fight to Larry. A clear case of styles make fights. I believe Larry Holmes is a class above Spinks but Spinks’ style proved to be a challenge for Holmes in both fights. He couldn’t find Spinks with...The Hammer!
I don't like one guy over the other but "hurt" means nothing if you got out boxed the rest of the round. I wouldn't say "robbed" I could see it being a draw but i need to see the whole fight again. Even if spinks lost the first 5 rounds. There were a lot of later rounds where spinks out boxed holmes. I was impressed with spinks ability to come back like that. If Holmes won it wasn't by much.
@@joeb2588 Bro honestly you have everthing on this video.Spinks didn't threw a punch for the first 4 rounds and barely threw a punch in the 5th. Holmes was CLEARLY 5 rounds ahead in the beginning of the 6th round. Don't you think that he won at least 3 others around to have the fight won ?
He was a good light-heavyweight, an undisputed champion. He caught Larry on an off-night in the first fight. This one he clearly lost. He got a KO against Jerry Cooney in '87, but Cooney had no defensive skills at all, never did. The Tyson fight showed what a bonafide heavyweight he really was.
Larry Holmes was a fighter who spoke his mind. He was hated by many because of it. He gave an old way past his prime Ali a terrible beating. That didn't increase his popularity. Add those 2 facts to the fact that he was the best heavyweight on the planet at the time. All Mike Spinks had to do was show up and they were going to use him to screw Holmes both times they fought. Mike Spinks had no business ever being heavyweight champion of the world and Tyson proved my point in 90 seconds.
First, a DRAW; second, Larry's WIN - a draw, perhaps. 1st 1/2 of fight 2, Larry Holmes; 2nd 1/2 of fight 2, Michael Spinks. He went on to hamstring a Parkinson-infected, aged Muhammed Ali, Larry did. Michael Spinks had lost to Michael Tyson even before he entered the ring; a loser was he out of FEAR.
You dont see no point where Spinks was in control of this fight. Its hilarious. You see shots connect but never see Holmes bothered or hurt. Spinks was doing all that and holding on.
Not the first time we have seen unfair decision. But as Lennart said. He had his chance especially in round 14. And he should have jumped all over him. But he might have punched him self out. But respect to Michael for coming back from everything Holmes did. Lennart is surprised but big men gets more tired
Spinks won a very close fight the first time around, but Holmes won a clear-cut decision in the rematch. They just didn't want to give him the W. People were still pissed off about his comments pertaining to Marciano. Larry clearly won the second stanza. Good fight.
Some people don't understand or remember how judges score fights. If you want to beat a defending champion, you have to clearly defeat him and not hope on tight point scoring. He must be outclassed. This is what Spinks did to Holmes in the first fight. If fight is even, defending champion gets the nod. Happened with Ali-Norton too on one side and Ali-Frazier I (1971) on the other side
@@counterpuncher01 Frazier vs Ali 1? Come on. Ali didn't - as you describe it - win that fight but not with a big enough margin (since he was the challenger in a title fight).
I agree with you, and I can’t believe that we are so far down in the minority with that same opinion. No doubt, Larry is the bigger, more powerful true heavyweight here, and he shows up big many times. But, Spinks just keeps battling back, even backing Larry up, which looks impossible because of Larry’s muscular heavy stature, compared to Spinks’ lean physique. But, it was Spinks’ spirited rebuttals throughout the fight, where the judges, in clear boxing conscience, could not say that Larry convincingly performed better, enough to take the title away from the reigning champion. Jinx Spinks always had in mind the way Larry beat up on Michael’s brother, Leon. Like a good brother, Michael avenged his beloved brother.
Exactly. These guys dont know what they are talking about. The rule about beating a champion decisively only applies to long reigning champs. The rule does not apply to a new champion with zero title defenses.
Michael Spinks is a elusive fighter A great fighter too Just going the Distance with Holmes as a blown up light Heavyweight..But being undefeated in this fight I guess they thought he was worth more then Holmes..I had it a draw but It should’ve been Holmes both times I wonder If Holmes was Champion when he fought Tyson how he would have done.
Holmes could outbox almost anyone ever, but aggressive fighters gave him some problems (Shavers, Weaver, even Cooney). Still, I think the Holmes who beat Shavers twice would have survived Tyson’s onslaughts and outpointed him.
I need to watch this second fight in its entirety again, Harold Lederman’s card seems kinda insane, he gave 7 of the first 8 rounds to Larry, and we all know Lederman, on HBO, is NOT an official scorer. I don’t even know where he watched the fight from... I’m not saying he scored it badly, I’d like to watch it more closely is all...and see if it matches up w/his card...
I agree. I think Spinks may have done enough to maybe earn a draw. As an impartial fan to both guys, I was impressed with spinks ability to come back like that in the second half. He got rocked rounds 1-4. But put it together in the second half. Great combos.
@@joeb2588 I have no idea what fight you guys were watching. I have watched the fight many times, although it's sickening, because we knew it was totally rigged. Personally, I scored it 12 rounds for Holmes, 2 for Spinks and one dead even. Not even a remotely close fight. Then Spinks went on to fight bums like Stephen Tangstead and Gerry Cooney. I actually think had Michael Spinks and Cooney fought 10 times, Gerry would've knocked him out 8 of 10, but didn't have it on that night. Had he hit Spinks with that left hook he hit Norton with, Spinks would've died in the ring. Honestly, I would've loved to see it. My ONLY regret about the Tyson/Spinks fight is that Tyson didn't get to manhandle him even more so, and just absolutely PUNISH and destroy Spinks, and draw it out for longer, the same exact way Julio Caesar Chavez did to Not so Macho Camacho. Chavez could have knocked his ass out midway through that fight, but promised everyone that once the fight was over, even Camacho's family wouldn't recognize him the next day. He wasn't lying! I wish Tyson would have punished and disfigured that little coward, pansy, Michael Spinks. But hey, beating his sorry ass in 91 seconds was pretty satisfying too. I wish he would've landed an overhand right to Spink's face the same exact way he did to Michael Johnson, that knocked out Johsnon's two front teeth. Spinks vs. Holmes I was close but still a joke, since it was basically a draw, and Holmes was the LONG TIME Heavyweight Champion, and looking to tie Rocky Marciano's record of 49-0. Spinks vs. Holmes II was a total and complete joke, that I think turned a lot of then boxing fans completely off, including me at the time. I was only 15-16 years old, and remember just being totally irate. I couldn't STAND Spinks' style of "fighting". Run, run, run, then have these little fits in the last 10-12 seconds of a round, doing NO damage to Holmes whatsoever, but would be able to persuade judges and win a round, he had zero business being in. Michael Spinks was a good, not great, Light Heavyweight fighter. But thank the Good Lord, that Mike Tyson made him look like the total bum that he was. It's a black eye to boxing that shows a Spinks victory over Holmes at any point. "Spinks Jinx, my ass". More like having the judges in your back pocket. I loved it after this fight, Spinks vs Holmes II, when The Great Easton Assassin, Larry Holmes, looked into the camera and said the immortal words, that still ring so very true. "I can say to all the judges, referees, and promoters, to kiss where the sun don't shine, and since we on HBO, that's my big black behind". Yes SIR Mr. Holmes, and how well said. Larry will go down as a top 3-4 Heavyweight in history, and Michael Spinks will go down as a total pansy ass bum, that 75% of true fight fans say he lost the first fight, and 99% of them say he lost the second fight. Thank the Lord, Mike Tyson came around, just at the right time, and absolutely humiliated Michael Spinks. What jinx was that he was talking about? He was the most scared to death fighter I've ever seen before Tyson basically castrated him on live TV during that fight. Michael Spinks was total garbage as a Heavyweight fighter.

CROOKED judges. He didn't even come close to losing. This just might be the most fixed fight in the history of professional boxing. I'm actually shocked Spinks wasn't wearing yellow and purple Laker boxing shorts for this fight.
I think this fight was closer than a lot of people are saying. I don't think it was a run away for Holmes. Spinks fought too conservative as compared to first fight, but it Spinks pulled it out because the judges didn't feel Holmes blew him away. A lot of times fans are looking at the same thing when they judge who won a round
@@Blackson187 Exactly. The first fight was at least close, but I think Holmes edged it out. The second fight was as one sided as you'll ever see. Anybody who thinks Spinks won the second fight, needs to attend the Stevie Wonder, school for the Blind. Holmes won AT LEAST 12 rounds, maybe 13. Had Muhammad Ali fought the SAME exact fight, against Michael Spinks, all three judges would've scored the fight, 15-0, 15-0, 15-0 for Ali, and everybody damn well knows it. Holmes took it up the ass in this fight, and it's hard to ever forgive these two crooks, who had the extreme audacity, to give the fight for Spinks. What a total disgrace to boxing, this night was. Thank GOD Mike Tyson quickly came around and ended Spinks' career in devastating fashion. I wish he would've knocked Spinks two front teeth totally out of his mouth.
Holmes was very superior in the first five rounds, then Speanks started using the same style he used in his first fight, which he won, and started to score a lot of points, especially in the last two rounds. He used all his energy and initiative with all his strength, which earned him a lot of points. I think the judges' decision was correct, even in all rounds from the sixth and above. Speanks was much better than Holmes, who lost the initiative to Speanks in all rounds
I don't know which fight the judges were watching that night, but there is no way Spinks should have won a decision. At the worst, it should have been a split decision for Holmes. In my opinion, it should have been a unanimous decision victory for Holmes. He won at least 8 or 9 rounds in that fight. They didn't want Holmes to reclaim the title because he was not a huge draw despite being one of the greatest champions in history. It was a sanctioning bodies dream when Mike Tyson came along, eventually becoming a champion, and later unifying the belts. It was all about money. Despite Larry being the greatest champion since Ali, that late 70's, early 80's period of Heavyweight boxing was thought of as a dark age for the division. They didn't want Larry Holmes to be the guy anymore, and that is no disrespect to the great Michael Spinks.
Naw fam spinks gave him a clinic on speed starting at round 5. Out jabbed him 8th on and stood up to holmes backing him up in the 10th on. The couple times holmes appeared to have him hurt he let spinks get rejuvenated...now turn the sound down and count the punches each fight hits with. Get out of your emotions spinks won.

Screw job and a half. Don King got Larry twice in a row for leaving him. Holmes won this fight without question.
Great fight, Spinks fought a great fight and had a lot of heart but Holmes won that fight.
Nope. Try again.
Here, I will try again -- good effort here by Spinks, but Holmes figured him out and did enough to win this fight.
It turned out to be a good fight towards the end, Larry was robbed big time. He never looked troubled by Spinks for the first five rounds, Spinks was on the defence it was almost as though he'd been told as long as you don't go down you will win.
Lol
Holmes clearly won
Nope. Spinks landed more punches.

I saw both of these fights live and I liked both fighters first one was close second was robbery.

This fight demonstrated a big flaw in Holmes' game: he wasn't a knockout puncher, and didn't finish guys when he had the opportunity. Considering how easily Mike Tyson blew through Spinks, one would have thought Holmes could have finished the job over 15 rounds...

I think this fight was closer than a lot of people are saying. I don't think it was a run away for Holmes.
It was a closer fight than all gge score cards reflected
But as much as I was for Spinx...

I never got over this fight since I was a kid. Holmes got robbed of the decision and I will say this until the day I die.
Funny, the HBO PUNCH STAT said Spinks landed 296, and Holmes only landed 293.......obviously Spinks was hurt a few times.
