  • Darryl "Flea" Virostko is one of the most legendary surfers to come from Santa Cruz. The Mavericks specialist grew up in a time where surf culture was at its localized height, bringing along a hard living, hard partying ethos that eventually led to serious drug addiction. Today, Flea is a recovering addict who operates his own rehab program (Fleahab), which teaches other patients how to surf and live an active lifestyle after getting clean. Watch The O'Riginals with Darryl "Flea" Virostko for the full story.

As someone who surfed the lane and had to endure Flea's constant haranguings, I didn't want to wish him well, but after watching this, he does seem to be a different person, so I wish him well on his sobriety. Hopefully he continues to treat people better going forward.

Was he that bad? I heard SC was pretty hostile bitd. Flea always seems laid back and mellow . Although I never surfed with him at the lane haha

I've always had tremendous respect for Flea and the Westsiders in SC. I'm glad that he's managed to turn his life around.

Such a legend. Growing up on the East Coast, we idolized the SC crew when Mavericks came into the mags. Luckily meth hadn't reached the east coast in my knucklehead days. Glad Flea turned it around. Also respect that he doesn't surf Mavericks anymore. He has absolutely nothing to prove there.

Wow, perfect documentary of your triumphs and challenges. Sharing your vulnerability was probably not easy. Doing so gives hope to those struggling with their addictions. We live in a magic part of the world and we can easily take it for granted. Surfing is good therapy, both mental and physical. Only if you let it be.

Fucking good on you flea. We had the pleasure of meeting Barney over here in the UK when he did a trip with Archy and Ford with the Santa Cruz guys. Goddam legend.
Big respect to you all from the UK boys. We thrived on your shit in the 90s. Xx

Good for you for promoting sobriety.
    The O'Neill's were awesome.

So awsome, i admired (from a distance) Flea in the early 2000's. Loved that white T he wore: "Bitch You Know The Side." Getting away from my point, I admire Flea more today than I ever did back in the day.. Opitomy of keeping it real. I know, the struggle is real.. Fuck.. Your involvement with the community at large.. Wish more people were like you.. Stay strong keep busy keep showing people where the bar is set at. That way we know amd there are no excuses. Props..

I have miscalculated the cliff entry only once, got blown off but made it look easy. Could have been all those years getting held down at Waimea, Sunset and the other North Shore breaks. The Lane can be dangerous.

RIP Barry Rann another great local midtown clown surfer in the 90's who had great potential but sadly took his life because of drug's and mainly alcohol!!! If you have never heard of him then you are not a true local that grew up in sc in the 80's and 90's!!
