On February 26, 2024, French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters that "nothing can be ruled out" in terms of placing French troops on the ground in Ukraine. How would that work? Scary thing is, i dont think anyone really knows whats going to happen. No one is in control of the situation. Theyre all trying to second-guess and third-guess each other, hoping that they will eventually come out on top. We're all just going to have to wait and see what happens, bcause almost anything can happen at any time.

Article 5 couldn’t be invoked because France willingly intervened in Ukraine. Same for Poland or Baltic troops. Russia would have to attack those countries directly for that to happen. Similar to what happened after 9/11. It wasn’t triggered in Vietnam, or Korea or in any of the other interventions that the United States was involved in. Basically what I am saying is that if France intervenes directly, unless Russia attacks French soil or Baltic soil directly NATO wouldn’t be involved. NATO would definitely be on an even higher alert.
Article 5 had been triggered once and once only, that was during the balkans war between kosavo and serbia!

My 300 IQ plan goes like this: Poland officially anex the whole territory of Ukraine (bc something something history bs) => Ukraine = Poland =>Russia is attacking Poland => Russia is attacking a NATO country
Article 5 only covers northern hemisphere so Vietnam wouldn't have counted anyways and its why Falklands didn't count. Idea is to avoid dragging the alliance into colonial wars.

24:36: on the contrary, expect things to immediately turn to nukes. An attack on French territory, conventional or nuclear, automatically triggers a nuclear response from France. That’s France nuclear strategy.
The problem with French nuclear weapons is that their arsenal is actually too small to provide credible deterrence. France has just under 300 nuclear warheads, distributed across just four submarines, of which only one is operational at most. In an emergency, deterrence would depend on a single submarine. By comparison, the USA and Russia each have over 5,000 warheads, distributed across dozens of submarines and land-based intercontinental missiles...

@@tuehojbjerg969 Of course, 300 warheads would theoretically work, but it is questionable whether they would all hit their target in the event of war and not be intercepted or destroyed right at the start of the war. Technical malfunctions can also never be completely ruled out, as we saw with the British missile tests that failed several times. In order to be able to maintain a credible deterrent at all times, France would need at least twice as many submarines as it currently has.
@@tuehojbjerg969 Russians have upward of 7 thousand warheads. Both sides could level each other. The point is to avoid that. But instead you're talking about France bombing Siberia. You should be stripped of human rights.

France intervening in Ukraine would NOT trigger Article 5, no more than the US interventions in Vietnam or Iraq did.

Having ally troops on Ukraine soil bordering Belarus could free up the tens of thousand ukrainian troops actually stuck there and allow them to fight on the east front.

@@A1esund- At first thought maybe. On deeper thought, perhaps not. French troops (btw, France is part of NATO) is a redline for Putin. There are Russian troops in Belarus and Russia itself has transferred tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus. If the French move into that area, another front is likely to open in that border, now with Belarusian forces also involved. And Kyiv is only 620 km or about 8 hrs drive by car to the Belarus border, which is why a considerable number of Ukraine troops are stationed there in the first place. So, no! French troops should just stay home and not get involved.
I find it funny Russia can send 2000 men to Moldova to “preserve the peace” but they cry the second France considers sending 2000 peacekeepers to the boarder of Belarus in Ukraine lmao

Yeah Russia can't beat four countries with proper militaries all at once with normal military weapons. Nuclear exchanges wise Russia might still be rather strong. Though people probably doubt that Russia is capable and kept them working.

Even in retaliation for a Ukraine intervention, a Russian attack on France proper would clearly trigger Article 5. A more "grey area" case would be if Russia attacked the French embassy in Ukraine, which is diplomatically considered French territory.
Except that didn't help the US in '79 in Tehran...
The US bombed the Chinese embassy in Serbia in 1998. Whoops...
An embassy is not considered sovereign foreign territory. It's a myth. Any belligerent act nullifies the agreement and an embassy mission can at any point be rescinded by the host country.

It doesn't change your analysis, but you didn't mention that France has its own little green men. Macron can always use the 'They are volunteers' when sending in the French Foreign Legion. But I think modern France sees the FFL as part of the French armed services.

Just something mostly off-topic that i had to pitch in because its been bothering me a bit, all the recent AI chatbots in a nutshell: they tell you the most encountered "opinion" (in their training data) on a certain subject, that's it. And we all know the internet (source of _all_ training data) isn't really full of fact-checked information, instead it's just 75% people talking about what they think etc & maybe 25% actually correct info, even if that much.
Its may appear like the AI's do focus on the correct info and even appear 'smart' at times, but then you realize it's because they literally told it "no" while talking to it for years before showing the public, people don't seem to understand that in some sense it's still expecting (for lack of better terminology) to be told no? it doesnt 'know' whats right or wrong, about anything, for all it 'knows' its just playing some kind of guessing game. And it doesn't actually "know" at all, we're nowhere near something like a rat brain or whatever.
With all due respect to the work that has been done, the term AI as it has become used in the last few years is extremely overblown. We're literally no step further compared to a few decades ago but now we have more data, that's not worth all this fuss at all, bubble gonna pop soon when something hits some fan. 🤷♂

French Troops doing border security on all but Russian border and frontline would free up a lot of Ukrainian troops and equipment for the front. Also, maintenance and support for a squadron of Mirage jets in Western Ukraine to achieve air superiority is a good deal.

Will a single Mirage take to the air? Russian air defense is the best in the world, and Ukraine has almost none, you make no sense. Russian troops are mostly on their own territory of Donbas so Mirages will not get close to Russian troops before being shot down. Watching them arrive means they are one missile strike away from obliteration.

It's not really going to trigger Article 5, since France, a NATO member, isn't being attacked.
This could be interesting.
Since France is not a part of NATO’s command structure, it can intervene without escalating the war outside of Ukraine, France is a well seasoned military, a capable Air Force, and not to mention the French foreign Legion with its plenty of experience fighting low intensity conflicts
If done right they can help Ukraine push back Russia to its Borders
At first I also was very unsure whether if William is narrating his videos himself or using an AI text-to-speech thing. But I stuck with his videos as they seemed to make sense and were interesting, and after a while I began to notice some very small things in his articulation that made me not question his humanity anymore. It did take quite a few videos though. He sure would make for a great fake AI narrator - if such a thing were to be needed somewhere :)

I'm not convince about the trip wiring argument. At least, I doubt it will work in France. If military men die in Ukraine, many French people will blame Macron for it, not Russia. However, if the goal is to push other European countries to intervene, maybe a few of them could flip.
Also, a lot of people here talk about (and you kinda did in your video) how France will send troops in Ukraine. Macron never said that, and that's important. It's obvious that everyone is considering sending troops in Ukraine, even if they don't talk about it. That's just what the head command of every armies in the world is supposed to do : planning, even if it won't happen. "Just in case".
If France finally send troops in Ukraine, I'll be really hyped about it, but I know that many here won't like that at all... (it's a french tradition to call every decisions made by our democratically elected leader, as a really bad decisions)

One other facet of this is that NATO countries not overtly fighting against Russia adds value to becoming a NATO nation. Hence why both Finland and Sweden decided to join NATO. They didn't want to get caught fighting a war alone as Ukraine has. It pays to join an alliance like that. By not joining or not having your country meet the criteria to join, you set yourself up for failure. It's a hard lesson for the world to learn. By making certain military actions exclusive to NATO nations, you establish incentives to join.
One very important thing though: France has nuclear bombs and they are not under NATO command. If Russia strikes France, France won't need NATO to retaliate.

The Soviet union sent troops and pilots to Korea so they have no reason to complain if France sends planes, pilots, and ground troops to Ukraine as long as the stay within Ukraine's borders.
The bigger issue is if Russian aircraft violate Ukrainian airspace. Would NATO assets engage the Russians? That could be the "Man, Moment, Machine" that sparks wider conflict.

The $64 point - France has no treaty obligations for this. And NATO doesn't either.
Internationally, you don't just send in trooops "just because".
The territorial limitation of Article 5 is found in Article 6, which delimits the area in which the armed attack has to take place (North America, Europe and other clearly defined areas north of the Tropic of Cancer).

what this fails to take into account is... Russian incursions into French speaking Africa. France is genuinely PISSED at lost resource revenue in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
The whole africa represents only 10 % of french international trade and Sahel (mali,niger,burkina) even less. France had only an old mine for uranium in niger almost empty. We lose very few in fact.
Ex french president hollande already wanted to leave sahel in 2016.
Lets not forget Frances Legion is taylor made for a foreign deployment to achieve the nations foreign policy.

Considering France said they would back Greece in a potential conflict with Turkiye, that seems unlikely for now.
Yeah… You remember Ukraine sinking a good chunk of the Russian Black Sea Fleet using converted jet skis? The only reason Russia isn’t doing the same is because Ukraine doesn’t have a fleet to sink. Putting the CDG in the Black Sea wouldn’t so much be a deterrent as a massive trophy which Russia would definitely sink on day 1 of a conflict with France.

A French intervention *might* work but at what cost. You would have two great powers effectively at war (France and Russia) as well as two Permanent Security Council members at war. This would be unprecedented since the end of WW2 and would arguably be a larger escalation than Russia invading Ukraine itself. Not only is it an escalation, but it sets a precedent until the end of time that two great powers can wage war on each other. Not even to mention the nuclear factor

The play that seems to be getting traction is a Belarus tripwire, where the Belarus-Ukraine border and maybe some parts of the northern Russia-Ukraine border would be taken over by France, freeing up Ukrainian troop to move south
They could also be used for logistics, intel, air defence and aircraft ground crew. Far enough away from the front line that the danger is low but still helping out.
Then france should be prepared for thousands of their troops coming home in body bags.

Almost. The French and Americans know from WW1 that the most valuable weapon any nation can have is combat experience. Russia and Ukraine have more soldiers with combat expertise than any other nation. A few men shooting into a group of a hundred soldiers takes nerves of steel. Steel that does not come from training or practice.

As a Pole, I am even more suspicious of NATO defence promises after learning that there is ambiguity built in. And Poles already have huge trust issues in alliances since 1939...

Poland was in a alliance in 1939? it looks Poland is in a better position than it ever was in all its history when it comes to having friends and being in close alliances - both the EU and NATO.
@@embreis2257 Yes, we had defensive arrangements with France and UK. That's why they declared war, but they took half measures that did absolutely nothing. Worst was that UK sent bombers to German cities, but instead of bombs they dropped leaflets asking for them to stop the war. Most British thing I ever have read about.
But considering whole history- yes, we are now in best geopolitical position we ever was, but that's more telling about our historic struggles than about our current safety. The biggest risk that I see is if Trump gets re elected, then I could see that he refuses to help due to those ambiguities built in. And then Germany could be too afraid to fight (both of Russia and their own past), and countries could be too afraid to be first to make a move knowing that US will not intervene. Although I have high confidence in Baltic States, Finland and Sweden, it could be too difficult for them to make a change in Poland.

as for Europe: if russia wins over Ukraine then we are all in hot water. but even if the US fails us, should russia send troops to a NATO country we Europeans will pull together - and much better than the British did in 1939.
btw, the thing the Poles had in 1939 wasn't an alliance. those 'defensive arrangements' as you called them were nothing like NATO or anything else Poland has today. it was something more akin to the defensive arrangements Ukraine just signed with countries like Denmark, the UK, France, Germany etc or the Budapest Memorandum from 1994.

I highly doubt Putin is panicking based on Macron's statements. Talk is cheap, even more so when the West established a pattern of sounding tough and creating red lines, only to back down from enforcing consequences because it was the easy way out at the time politically.
However I don't think these statements were meant for putin. They were meant for Europe. It tells Germany, especially weak willed Scholz, that the time of easy solutions and a short conflict are over and the consequences of a fallen Ukraine are dire. It signals to the Baltics and Poland that France finally agrees with the alarm bells they've ringing since Feb 2022.
And finally, it implies thinking that America will come to Europe's rescue is over. We are no longer the reliable partner we once were for 70+ years. Thank you, republicans.

France has a military agreement with Moldavia. Moldavia has a rebel province in Transdniestria (and one of the largest depots of Soviet calibre ammunition in the world) - maybe Macron can bring Transdniestria into the fold and Moldavia donate the ammo to Ukraine. Just a thought.

Possibly. Russia has inadvertently given France a reason to look at ways to give them a black eye directly, or as has been happening already, supplying self propelled guns that help turn more Russian soldiers and Russian equipment into past tense.
