Been loving Andrew Garfield since Boy A and I was one of the skeptics when he was announced to be playing TASM, but he pulled off an amazingly (sorry for the pun) dark version of the superhero. Then on to 99 Homes, Dr. Parnassus, Breathe, Under the Silver Lake, Mainstream, etc. not mentioning his more recent and already more popular ones. This scene is the National Theatre staging of AIA in London. Got a hold of it and am rewatching it from time to time since 2018. If he couldn't get a Best Actor nom for TTB they should at least consider him for Supporting Actor in The Eyes of Tammy Faye.

This play saved my sanity during a very, very dark, painful time in my life. Millennium Approaches tears your guts out, mercilessly, and no one with a quarter of a heart leaves the theater without feeling sick, and worthless, and angry, and hurt, and ashamed, and disgusted. A person cannot go any lower. And then comes Part II, Perestroika. And the Angel picks you up off of the garbage heap, and raises you up to see your own worth, and more importantly, the worth of everybody who surrounds you in your life. God Bless You, Tony Kushner, for what you did for me. "You are fabulous creatures, each and every one. And I bless you: More Life. The Great Work Begins.” And it did.

Denise Gough brought a really great approach to Harper. That character can be and has been played, very aloof and in a constant state of spiraling. Yet Denise played her here with a true sense of reality. She made it so the audience can put themselves in her shoes the way that they can for Prior in this scene. This more grounded approach makes it so that when Harper starts her "I wanna get away from here" dialogue at 3:00 you can really see and feel the polarity of the text.
Andrew is fantastic is also fantastic in this role and commands the stage, but I definitely think Denise holds her own here too.

2 couples. Prior (Garfield) has just been diagnosed with AIDS and is quickly deteriorating and his partner Lewis cannot handle it and leaves him. On the other hand, you have Harper (the woman) and his husband Joe who are going through a crisis with Harper being addicted to medications and Joe having an awakening and realizing he is gay and has feelings for his coworker Lewis (Prior's partner). This is the climax of the first act when both couples break down.
