Lol true🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂 saaammmeee
Hey Joe. A real interesting video.i just wanted to give you a real big thanks here from Australia! You are one of the main people that inspired me to create my own channel. 22 videos and 3 months in, boy I appreciate your effort even more!! Even though I've had a home studio for over 20 years, I still pick up plenty from you! You are a legend :)
That multi-band compressor trick can be achieved with a dynamic eq (which is a very similar concept). A good and free plug-in to do that is the TDR Nova.
Great video, as always!
+1 for dynamic eq. For this kind of application, I feel I can get more transparent results with that.
Waves has a great one I use (F6)
+Diogo Yup, TDR Nova is perfect for this. For those not familiar, a dynamic eq like TDR NOVA can attenuate a frequency band only when signal levels within a band exceed a certain level (cutting only when a certain frequency is loud). I also have Melda Productions Autodynamic eq, which is fantastic. But the TDR Nova eq is free! And don't let the price fool you people- it is one great eq!
@@davidnika446 try fabfilter pro q 3
@@DeeKeyLP fab filter is 300 dollars compared to f6 is like 40 bucks. And literally only difference is mid side processing in the ProQ3. Which is unnecessary if you have another mid side processor. Idk about NOVA tho. TDR makes nice stuff
The unexpected humor just adds to these tips lol. In all seriousness, I have learned a lot from you. Thanks man!
Some say the toilet is still running to this day.
I get one at around 4490hz, and sometimes a lower one at around 2200hz. And only on certain syllables, and only after compression is added. Sinus cavities, septum vibration, who knows. I've employed all of the techniques you show here, and they work, depending on how far you need to go. Dynamic EQ is a third, similar technique. And I generally find that if I'm less tense when I'm singing a heavy part, the effect is lessened or even eradicated entirely. That's hard to develop if you're not a road-touring singer. But I had never heard the "get closer to the condenser" idea. I will give that a try. As always, very entertaining and helpful, Joe.
Citizen 337 did you try the get closer to the mic idea?
Great reasoning on when to use static vs dynamic processing.
This is a good example of a situation that would benefit from the Waves L3-16 multi and limiter in parallel.
1 or 2 db of limiting. 16 discrete bands only grab the boomy, nasally, poppy, harsh peaks, and adds a little distortion for a smooth cutting tone.
I have cheilognathopalatoschisis, of course surgically corrected from my early childhood but my voice is quite horrible and this is - in even accentuated version - my common problem.
I am not even singing, only doing voiceovers :D
I deal in voiceover and the bad frequencies vary in level from hard sell to soft soap. I set up the compressor like I learned from you, going for a ballpark threshold/ratio etc. The general setting will cover most of the bad spots. The ones that still need a touch, rather than automating the compression, I will draw in volume on the raw vocal [4 point, not 3 gives you a square bottom] & drive that into the same compressor. Now they are all perfect & I only had to get manual on a few of them.
Have a blessed day. :+}
Firstly, i take down ALL the frequencies that i dont like, and after it, i compress the vocals normally.
Thanks for advice! Keep it going!
Awesome video, thank you! Also thought I'd share an interesting tidbit: in vocal pedagogy, we call that 2k-4k frequency range (and a little higher for female vocalists) 'the singer's formant.'
A dynamic EQ also serves equally well in this scenario and can focus on the problem area significantly, or even some De-Essers providing they can be suitably adjusted to the correct frequency range and set to a bell curve, rather than a high pass
Great stuff, Joe. I think your singing has always been pleasant, but you're getting even better lately.
So far the best video on youtube on this matter. Great coverage. I especially appreciate how you go into details and explain thoroughly what happens with voice, breaking it down, deconstructing it into small easily understandable bits. This is the way to teach and you are a great educator. Seriously. This is the model of how these kind of videos should be made. Subscribed, liked, bookmarked and gonna watch all your other videos. Thanks, and good luck with the album if you are still working on it!
Thanks Joe! Most of the time in these situations I like using my trusty Nova (Dynamic)EQ. One of the best free plugins!
You really explain this well!!! Please do more videos like this!!! Enjoyed this!! And learned a lot !!!
Lord voldemort disliked this video 🤣
killed me lol

Long time follower. Thanks so much for your content and info. Always learning something new! One thing I noticed though in this video at 8:55, you mentioned not wanting to chop up a vocal and apply eq just to problem areas, but why not? We spend so much time on editing drums and guitars and mixing, why not spend the extra hour or two and automate eq cuts, quickly drop volume on problematic sibilance, apply specific processing word by word if needed, etc, on the all important vocal? Theres some really cool tools that can do a bulk of this, but sometimes going through line by line and doing it manual is the best and most natural sounding way. My 2 cents. Thanks again for your awesome vids!
Love the way you explain things, thanks for all you do, it's much appreciated 👍
very well explained - thanks so much
mate i swear i did a course on production on udemy made by you years back, i recognise that vocal sample.
Your waiting for the toilet to stop running reminds me of having to record at my bandmate's apartment and having to wait for his old fashioned radiator to stop hissing.
Thanks man
Nice work. Love that you add humor to your vids, informative as well as funny. Side chain compression is also another tool, perhaps you could do a vid on that as well.
Thanks so much Joe, great information! I've been dealing with a few troublesome vocals recently. I especially liked the result you got from the multi band compressor.
That's it! WAYNE ROONEY. That is the one you look like. I've been watching your videos knowing you resemble someone, but couldn't quite figure it out yet. In all seriousness, awesome work man. I've been learning a lot from your vids. Keep putting out awesome content!
😊
try an dynamic eq! Love your Videos!
Joe won't use a dynamic EQ (which is the perfect remedy), because Presonus don't make one.....
2k-3k usually for me. This is something I do in every mix.
great job as usual Joe, u make learning fun
Starts at 2:25, you’re welcome. Good tips.
Oh ok this doesn't apply to me, I don't have a nose
It is my understanding that Frank Sinatra brought his own mic to every session. I thought it was a Neuman U-47 (not a ribbon). Maybe I'm mistaken. At any rate, great information. Really enjoy your videos.
You could be totally right.
I am a front of house guy, and I have allways wondered how little singers do to get their sound, and how little they know about it.
In 2 years only one singer brought his own microphone, and close to none have any idea which effects they want on their voice.
Thanks a lot, you fixed my issue 👍
This video's audio has a really big peak in the frequencies he is talking about. Wonder if it's on purpose ;)
Just love your voice and videos. It would be fun if you compiled an outtake video.
Hey Joe there a plugin called soothe 2. Best plugin for controlling midrange. Check it out.
CPU killer
I am having the same frequency noise. Mines are in like four or five different places in the higher frequency range.
7:23 I can’t hear the whistles going away 🤔
great explanations!!! thanks!!! soo much!!
This video made me realize how severe my hearing damage from years of playing metal actually is, because I couldn't actually tell the difference between any of these before/after examples, and I have no doubt this guy is legit. Sigh...
The best way to deal with harsh frequences is use soothe2 hahahaha
Wonder what the timer was for. Great video love the multi band compressor idea
Thank you
Question, would you have a separate bus for verses (chill singing) vs the choruses (balls to the wall)?
great stuff...cheers....helpful
Hi joe,
I know this video is a little old now, but I've been discovering your channel over the last 6 months and devouring every piece of content that I can. I'm also currently enrolled in your home studio recording course, and getting ready to start your mixing one as well.
I guess my question is, what is the secret to getting really tight vocal dubs? I found that no matter how hard I try to deliver every syllable on the same beat, something as simple as having a different draw of breath can sometimes change how a line is sung.
So far slip editing and surgical adjustments within melodyne have been my go-to solutions, but I would rather just get it right at the source.
What about microphones for nasal sounding voices. Tom Werman who recorded Motley Crew said they had to use a special mic on Vince to help cancel out some of his nasal singing, so they would not have to do a lot of processing in the mix. Any opinions on that?
I usually do it with automation on Multiband comp
I've tried top down mixing a couple times, but I have mixed feelings about it. I think I get better results the old fashioned way.
lol "mixed" feelings .. anyone?? :p
@@ColetonicSolFa 😂😂
bro your videos are so damn coherent! thank you
I agree with all of the dynamic EQ folks. Just the right tool. Plenty of choices these days. iZotope Neutron, FabFilter ProQ3, iZotope Nectar, others as well.
Thank you for the video, it is exactly what I was looking for ! I am also trying to mix male vocals in a fresh way but with lot of reverb, like ethereal vocals out of the world HAHAHA I will check your other videos but if someone read this and think that maybe can give me advice, it would be very welcome hahaha🤗👻💗
The intro 😂
Dude!!!! I need that shirt!!!!!!!!
I want that t-shirt!
good stuff man...
It helps that you can sing :)
GIRATS!
The "presence" range.
which mic you are using to communicate? that mic is pretty awesome
is there a t shirt of joe smacking down frequencies
how about a warmer mic? Did you use a mic with a boost in that range?
The thumbnail immediately spoke to me. Well, for a friend, I mean.
Thats funny besides being a bass player I'm a plumber by trade!! LOL!!
Quick question, if I eq to remove that nasty frequency when mixing, but later when mastering I add eq on the entire track will that accidentally add that nastiness back in? Sorry I’m new, just wondering
Where can I get a shirt like your?
yo shouldnt you be making the eq cuts before compressing?
Do you take .wav and tell me what is wrong with the vocals ?
What do you think about using an dynamic eq?
you may have just saved my life.
de-esser as a narrow band compressor?
Tutorial begins at 2:23 ...
What microphone are you using?
NO! 😆.
Just use TDR Nova. It solves all these problems and ......
It's free!!
if you have a solution already why are you even here lool
Quick question. I am using ez drummer. How can I make it sound big and huge ? Reverb?
Thanks
1. Pick sounds that already sound huge.
2. Try compressing the crap out of the room mic.
Pultec EQ or style plugin
Joe that must've been your wife calling to disagree with that view Lol 10:12 jk great stuff as always love the videos
haha Joe i just fixed my toilet it would never turn off.
Oh the lucky ones without a nose
It sounds kind of pitch shifted, maybe in the doubles, which I think could phase out some frequencies? I didn´t like it much, sorry.
I only record folks without noses 🤪
I hear a whistle in your vocal
Gullfoss EQ. Boom problem solved
Or Soothe or Soothe 2
Jokers are REALLY over rprocessing vocals THESE days.
In MY opinion they are wayyyy too loud and too transparent. iJs.
We spend ALL this BIG $$$ on these VERY expensive mics and we just tear them apart.
We might as well buy cheap mics. Lol 😆 🤣 😂
I'd call it whistly rather than nasal, but anyway
just cut off the valve B
Toilet
😂😂😂😂joe is a clown
