    Omfg, thank you! I don't get how bands freak out when I say I charge 400 bucks for a generic video. You have 5 people in the band, thats less than 100 bucks each :/ also, I am down to help you as an assistant for videos around the Houston area.

      +Low StringTV Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this! The biggest issue is that bands have to pay for so many things and I think they get overwhelmed with all the money that it takes to do this. I have noticed that the more I work with the same band they start to understand that it takes more to do the big stuff. You rule! I always need help when I'm in Houston so I will definitely hit you up!

    Do you have advice on moving into a bigger budget range? I've been doing $300-$1000 videos in order to learn, grab experience, and get known. However, I really don't want to become the "cheap" guy. Should I just refuse the lower paying jobs and hold out for the bigger ones, or just keep steadily increasing my prices?

    • @JeremyBrookover
      @JeremyBrookover  7 лет назад +2

      To be honest, I slowly moved up. The instant you have a solid high budget video to show, it gets easier. I started out doing $500 videos and moved up to $1000. When I finally got to the $1500 to $2000 range I started getting label videos. I have now worked with budgets up to $8k. Really the best way i've learned to do it is, don't have a set price. I charge by the idea, different ideas call for different budgets. For example: If the artist want's to shoot a high quality video in a studio, you have to explain that their are studio cost and lighting rentals. But if you have an artist that want's to do a simple video with the location provided, you can charge less. As for charging for your time, you need to figure out what it's worth to you. No matter the budget size I always make $1000 to $1500 per video. If the budget is $3k, we have $1500 to $2000 to play with on the budget side. I hope this helps! I think I'll start doing more videos explaining things in more detail.

      Awesome, I just recently did a video with a $1500 budget in which I made very little but I thought it was worth it for the higher-quality look, so hopefully it'll get me more work of that kind. Really appreciate the advice, and please keep making the videos! There aren't enough channels that give advice specifically to MV directors so this channel is great for me!

      You going to have to collaborate with a good artist in other to build your portfolio up that way, they can pay you for what they see.

    This video helps me so much! Since I was 14 I want to become a music video director. I am studying right now, but I am struggling with how to start after this. I was wondering how did you start your career? I will be 21 when I am graduated and im trying to figure out if I should start an Indie or if I should start working under someone else... Can you help me out?

    • @mediaiweb

      You need to build a portfolio first, collaborate with an extremely good artist with a good song. Portfolio, Portfolio, Portfolio is what you need and to create a portfolio, u have to do the free job for good artists with a good song . do like say 4 free videos for portfolio sake . as people like to pay for what they can see before parting with their cash. The customer will be paying for everything just let him know that u can do free video for him but he will be paying for the equipment and u will be directing and editing for free that way u get the portfolio in return .only then, u can start getting jobs so make sure you choose a genre that way u can be that go-to guy . it's about what the customer wants cos they're are the one paying to avoid conflict, of course, u can say it you were for creative input.

    Love the video. I am also trying to break out of the $500 range. My idea is to invest a solid chunk of change of my own money into a music video, in order to have a higher budget sample under my belt and try to attracted the bigger clients. Any thoughts on this?

    • @JeremyBrookover
      @JeremyBrookover  7 лет назад

      I don't know if I would put my own money up unless it was a person you really believed in. I have many times did work with no pay to put all the money I got into the video. What I did do was invested into gear. If you own all your own gear it makes life a lot easier. I can send you a link to some lights that are fairly cheap and do the same work that arris do. Again if you feel strong about the project and you believe in it, I'd understand investing into the video. You do have to make sacrifices to push forward.

    question what did u start out as how long did it take for u to become a director whats a good trainging ground.

    • @JeremyBrookover
      @JeremyBrookover  7 лет назад +1

      I started out as a guy with a camera, haha. I went into this knowing almost nothing about video. I had a friend who knew a little and him and I started playing around with ideas. How I made it might not always work for others. I had a lot of friends in the music world and got lucky enough that some of those friends took a chance on me. A lot of what I've learned was just exploring the camera and how lighting effected things. I did and still do watch a great deal of youtube videos. I think the biggest thing is to set your pride and ego aside and accept that there are people out there who know drastically more than you. It's more than okay to ask for help.
      To me the biggest thing you can do in the beginning is: learn your camera in and out. You should know how to pull just about any look you want out of your camera. That is something I did very early on. I would always research new cameras before I used or purchased them. Lighting is one of the most important pieces of any video work. It can set the mood and separate your subject from its surroundings. So watching videos on how to set up different styles of lighting is key. I would say next is lenses, finding what kind of lenses you like and what fits best with your shooting style.
      What do you want to do? That is the biggest question of all. I have been doing this for 6 years now and finally know what I want to do in this vast world that is video. Just find the things you like and study how they made it. I watch movies in a very different light, now that I have directed and edited so many videos, It's crazy what you can learn from just closely watching some of your favorite videos.
