for college, I suggest studying an upcoming course through the summer on your own. For instance if you have chemistry 1 next semester, focus a month in summer on learning the material. When you are in the actual class you will have a general understanding of each topic, and all you will have to do is iron out the details.

Ariel Cruz I always plan on doing that..and well it doesnt happen. I just need to stop being lazy. Your suggestion is great tho.

rafael soria Haha at least in the summer you can learn without being under much pressure. You will be able to learn whenever your'e in the mood. Just drink a cup a coffee put on instrumentals and you're good to go.. Good luck!

I used this strategy for my math 101 course. Divide and conquer. I ended up making a 100 on the final and a 97 in the class. There is no hiding from problem solving. No grey area. You know it or you do not. That is why I love science and math.

I believe that one self-defeating thought is that some person in class is taking significantly less time to get through the material and still ace the test, but a counter argument I use for that is "Well, if that so-and-so was really that smart, they wouldn't be in the same room as I am, they should already be doing something more worthwhile if they are really of that caliber", btw, great video, cold hard truth!!

I'm a senior in high school looking ahead to college and really appreciate this video man. I got a 5 in bio but a 4 in Chem and think I could've done better if I applied these study strategies I half assed my homework every night lmao. In college I probably won't do EVERY problem as many of them are redundant (especially in a calculus class) but I'll do one of each type. I assume you don't mean every problem literally cause ain't nobody got time for that

Can you please share tips on note-taking? The thing I have trouble most is spending too much time on taking notes. Do you take notes as you read? I have a hard time mentally moving onto practice problems until I have taken notes from the book or re-organized my notes from lecture. By the time I'm done with my notes, I am left with too little time for practice problems (which is what I want to get to in the 1st place!). However, if I don't start with notes, I feel too scatter-brained when doing practice problems. Any tips? Thank you. :)

    • @RedPaintedTable
      @RedPaintedTable 7 лет назад +5

READ and don't take notes on your first pass through of the book unless it's a bio/ memorization course. Just understand everything there... Then start doing practice problems. Get stuck? Use the solutions manual and learn how to do the problem....As he said in the video 1 day later try the problem again without looking at the solution manual this time... Repeat every step but reading the chapter again.... If it's a memorization course like bio then read the book for understanding then take notes on ONLY DETAILS. Then make Anki Flashcards or regular flashcards for the details. Good LUCK!

what sucks for me is that im going for biological sciences in university, and no matter where i go in the internet, there is ONLY COMPLAINTS! everyone tells me there is no jobs, that i will be unemployed forever, or i will spend 6 years minimun after university getting a phd so that i can work a not so good job teaching at ok universities... it's really depressing, frustrating and sad to go to university with these thoughts in mind... even though i know that you need to try and be the top of your class, network the hell out of your college professors and peers, do your own experiments on free time, internships, work for free for professors, get your names in their papers, and all that good stuff, i still think that it might all be in vain =[ so maybe i'm changing to biochemistry or somenthing related next year, only so that i can keep working in science, but with a focus on industry instead.

How do you handle nerves. I got a 88 in chemistry 101 lecture and I had one test where I literally froze on the test. I legitimately couldn't think. I got a 65 on that test and I was so close to getting the answer...I was just frozen. Admittedly, I was studying by doing all my homework in one chunk. I probably could have studied more, perhaps that would help with the brain freeze. I'm just scared that if I study super hard and I freeze on a test what i the point. I'm not sure what to do. Thank you.

the other thing that we have in common is that I also doing all of my homework in one chunk, and I definitely could have studied more.

I'm in an intro to Chemistry course in college and of course I waited until the day before the test to study (my test is tomorrow.) As I was procrastinating watching RUclips videos I decided to search something that can benefit me and came across this video. You make it seem so simple and I'm sure it is! I'm just so lazy and I never want to do anything but I'm going to try and take it step by step. I've honestly haven't even opened my chemistry textbook yet and class started almost 2 months ago. I hope I can do this.

Hahah I remember I passed! Barely, but I did study super last minute, like literally the night before. Imagine if I prepared for days! It's a good strategy to use, along with the notes the teacher provides. I normally fail my exams when I study last minute but this time I had a plan and managed to focus on the important stuff and do a lot of practice problems to get the hang of it.

How do you read every chapter and do every problem when you have 16 credits? I seem to do several hours and complete a chapter but have a 20% retainment of the material. Which tells me that's a horrible method. How do you stop and pick up another subject? Thank you!

Great video! I have a question to you; when you say do the problems/questions in your book, i dont really know how to do them in the best way.. How should i do them? Should i 1. read and understand the material 2. make notes 3. make a text of your note?
In bio for example we get up to 10 questions in my school like What is natural selection? Where is your Cell? How do animals adapt? Explain the evolution.....
Please make a video or send me a massage on how to answer these questions or questions of any kind related to sience (How to take notes from a text book, and make a own text using these words).

I'm currently a premed student and I am struggling finding ways to study for my biology class. The class average on the midterm was a 36%, but I managed a 78%. I currently have a B so it's not an issue of pass or fail; however, I really want an A. The majority of the class dropped and there are now only 12 students in the class . The professor says to study the power points and not the book because the book goes "too in depth". I'm not sure what my next step should be considering his powerpoints do not coincide with the tests.

  • @385423

I don't know about you guys but what works for me is on every chapter that is covered on the exam, I make my own outlines of the chapters on a word document, and save it to my USB memory stick and my PC just in case. I basically like to copy the concepts from the book onto my outlines of every chapter, but I like to break them down and keep them simple if they are too technical. Type in every bold words from the chapters and write down their definitions, break down the concepts and keep them simple, and only focus on the main points and also highlighting concepts that require a more in depth specific look, put all these on my outline, etc.
Also if the book comes with a mastering Pearson or any other program that is designed to help you better understand and practice the content, I take advantage of this too by taking the mock quizzes or exam that come along with the program. Once I am done taking those mock quizzes/exams I like to review the work; see which questions I got wrong, copy all the questions and correct answers that are displayed at the end of the practice quiz/exam on a word document or flash cards (since writing with actual hands is better for memorization), and review all this before the exams. I cannot stress the number of times Ive come across questions on real exams that are similar to the question that are on the mock quizzes/exams that come with these programs, they are mostly just different in language and format but same concept. One class I even had real exam questions that were on the mock quizzes/exams with the exact same word/answers, so this does help a lot.
well I don't know about you guys but this is what works for me. Making your own outlines on a word document are especially useful for a final cumulative exam.

If the exam is after a weekend I literally do all the problems , literally every time I do this I get 10/10 works like magic. Once I was the only person on my class that got a 10/10 in the midterm

I'm mostly asking this for biology because it contains lots of terms. Physics and chem I understand the best when I just go straight to problems but in bio i'm struggling a little.

This is nice and all, I will try it. I had my test last week, that week we had a huge packet of problems, 2 lab reports, homework oh and a midterm. Soooooooo....... i don't know if this is practical or realistic with an intense load.

Ok good but what about if there is a really difficult problem that stops you on your tracks and then another one, then another one and eventually you get through the 1 hour study session doing 7/8 questions out of the 30 problems. How do you end up dealing with the pace of the course?

Hello. I've been a big fan since this channel has started. I just wanted to know, do you prefer someone to take chemistry or biology their first semester in college?
    Please and thank you.

Doesn't matter but make sure you don't take anything together unless you're really wanting to spend tons of time. Hopefully someone told you this...TIME+SMART WORK = A+

Since I am slow when it comes to remembering science. What I find that helps is to study slow. What I do is, is that when I am looking at a concept that I want to remember; I write down each word while reading the concept in the text book trying to comprehend the information in my head, also trying to form a picture.

Usually i just mindlessly stumble through the text, but this sounds like a much better way to grasp the subject matter. Thanks for the tip :)

Your o-chem class was easy if all you had to do was the problems in the back of the chapter of the Carey book. What a joke. I will agree that practice of problems from various science classes helps. But with o-chem, there was practice with rxn mechs. Carey lacked that. Calculus was about problems and understanding. Cell bio was recall and memorization. Micro was recall and memorization. O-chem was recall, mem, and practice. Much of other stuff was busy work. Prioritization was important.

So true. Work the problems! It teaches you how to work *any* problem. If something comes up you didn't understand, work more problems in that specific area.
Also, when bored of reading, draw simple doodles of the diagrams in your text and label the important stuff. Over and over. Repetition is key. You'll be amazed how those doodles present themselves to you on exam day.

Whether you want to enter medical school, study Wizardology, or merely become a self absorbed "know it all," you need to watch the videos that this young man created. He is THE BUDDHA for all who seek scientific edification without going insane or otherwise losing your health and well being. Subscribe to his channel. OMG...What a find.

Also, keep track what you get wrong. Don't count partial credit, or you just needed to do one more things, or just divide by two, etc. Each one that you don't get exact final answer count as wrong, and take your average. It helps to better emulate the test situation and you give yourself a realist assessment

Hey Mr. Ossareh, you didn't mention anything about note taking. I would assume we need to take notes for each class right? Your condensed notes method sounds useful but is it unnecessary for Undergrad courses? Thanks!
